How will character progression work in Elsweyr?

Now that CP is being halted, what is the point of the expansion beyond just the story? The whole purpose of playing an MMORPG (and any RPG really) is to progress your character, they should have never gotten rid of VP.

imo the story is the biggest point of playing this game.

but i'm sure you'll find gear to hunt, motifs to steal and dragons to fight. or is that not character progression?
What are Natch Potes? Can you eat those?
    I believe in Genie-Gina.

Well with new gear sets you will not technically be Progressing as you will have to forfeit something to get something else of equal value.

Why dont they just increase the gear level to 320? or extended the level cap to 60? idk...

what are you talking about? The last time you leveled was back mid 2015 until CP300 cap. Afterwards you had always more CP as you can spent. So what progression are you talking about?

The progression in this game is: motif/achievement/dlc/crafting/time runs/PvP ranks/housing. But not leveling...

We play for almost 4 years on same gear level and outleveled CP caps ages before...

I think you'll find different views on what the purpose of playing an MMO or RPG is, not everyone plays just for the character progression.

Elsweyr will have a new story and class which many are interested in, as well as new sets (gear progression), new trial (content/skill progression), skyshards and public dungeons for SP (character progression).

For many people the updates also didn't feel like progression, they've earned the CP months if not years ago and are just getting back pay for their work.

CP is only part of character progression. There will be new sky shards, and sets to collect.

He means character growth. I.e. leveling

What's the point of being allowed to spend thirty points, you already aquired months ago, for less than half a percent bonus in a few things. The CP system isn't meaningful progression, and should be totally scrapped.

How much more do you need really after you reach 9000?

All i play an mmorpg for is getting gear, leveling and doing things that increases my characters power (like every other mmorpg)

i also enjoy playing the auction house and making millions but you know..the PC elites cry whenever people ask for an auction house (must be nice having a bunch of addons to help you, i play on Xbox)

Story and Lore are on the bottom of my list on reasons to play an mmorpg. i played WoW for 12 years and i could not tell you a thing about the story other then Arthas is a badass.

Contemplating cancelling my pre order and giving Black Desert a try when it comes to Xbox in a few weeks.

You see a smart company would have capped the CP off each new dlc/expansion so people could not store up 90000000 points and get bored. Maybe give people a small amount of gold or something when they reach an exp milestone...but clearly the CP system was not well thought out.

The CP System gets reworked atm. That doesnt mean progression will stop. Progression is only stopped temporarily.

What I really liked about guild wars 1 was elite skills.
They were enhanced versions of skills.
You got them from buying a capture signet and using it on a defeated boss corpse to acquire a skill from it.

What I mean by enhanced is that it cost less or did a little something extra. The same way skills have morphs. But it was a whole new skill and you only got to slot one elite skill.

For example. You had a skill that stole energy from the target and gave it to you. The elite skill based on that would steal energy and also do damage by how much energy was stolen.

Try getting into vet trials and vet hardmode dungeons, while it's not character progression, it is progression of your own personal skills, and your ability to adapt to circumstances and mechanics allowing you to eventually adapt and "git gud" at the game from a pve perspective.

The game is based around horizontal progression, not vertical. Who cares if you don't get 30 more CP, it really doesn't change anything. There will be plenty of new stuff to do and complete. As players get more CP, bosses and fights have to get progressively harder to avoid power creep, so it just ends up being an endless loop anyways. It's far better to have progression based around individual player skill imo.

Man, i LOVE grinding stuff, used to annoy my friends back in the day when i showed them i leveled Squall in FFVIII to max level before even leaving the first area.

i love having a goal right in front of me and only time is the enemy.

The game could add factions and factions give services or perks, but in order to be allowed ot enter a factions buildings you have to maintain a role to play. Like being a good person and never breaking the law, and giving money to beggars or fishing every day, or having a fancy house. Tons of things to do with that.

Progressing your character doesn't really mean "accrue imaginary points of progression" be it levels, CP points or whatever. More like developing you character through the in-game means capable of changing your character status. It we talk generally, reputation changes, hero disposition towards the world, the state of the in-game comrades and their number and their opinion of the hero, hero's alignment and beliefs - these things are in the heart of any RPG. That is, actually, progression of your own beliefs and ideas through in-game means. If you don't see it like that, than maybe any average korean grind MMO would suit you better than ESO

If I were to describe an RPG system, let LAST words would be character progression, really.

Well ESO has zero of all those things you mentioned so....

Who cares if i steal everything, all i have to do is launder it and pay a small fee and everyone loves me again...ZERO immersion

Not exactly zero. As I said, it's your own beliefs and opinion about the world as you see it from character eyes that matters.
Basically, story development results in changes in the world. As you progress through the quest system, there would be permanent changes in the instance state of the world you character lives in. You get your own comrades (Razum Dar, Naryu even Cadwell etc )throughout your journey, though their opinion is quite generalized. You update your own knowledge as well. Encounter new enemies and mechanics.

Steal too much, and you might not be able to repay it. And if you have hundreds of thousands of gold to pay for your offenses, consider it from in-game perspective. 100 000 is enough to buy a small estate in a game world. With that much money you can certainly prevent any kind of rumors spreading.

It's good that you mentioned stealing, because since Ultima Online I haven't seen any general-genre MMO (I am not talking about thieving centered MMOs about pirates etc) with any kind of stealing system in place. Which is quite laudable, that ESO made such a system almost from scratch

You could also get a system where you pick a diety to impress and get an ability or service or perk from that, but you have to maintain a roleplay status to keep it.

if only Zeni would add in more "experiences" to the game.

They're looking to change it so that there is a different means of character progression that they hope won't be as detrimental to the game as the Champion Point system.

Halting CP is only their temporary solution for now. The character progression you seek will return whenever they implement the new system. In the meantime, look for other things that bring you joy in playing the game or take a break from ESO until they implement the new character progression system.

    Besides the fact that new gear cap would be a useless change anyway as players are autoleveled to the world and gear at your level is just as strong regardless of *what* level you are, I dare you;

I'm not saying you have to like it (I do). I'm saying that with it in place, new gear does jack all but make people refarm old gear or accept a power nerf.

We can discuss our differences on the system in a more relevant thread though :)

This, personal skills is way more important in ESO than character gear and build as long as later is relevant.
On the other had we have gotten lots of new good gear and it looks like we get more.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I play for the skill points. I have 1 character I pretty much play all the time and just have some PvP ranks to have all the skill points in the game. I love the flexibility I get from having the level of skill points to both craft and play a Tank/DPS/Healer all on one character. That's the benefit for me.

That said, with the current CP system, I was really hoping the cap would stop around 1200 as I believe that is the point that being a true hybrid (ie using the best morphs of stam and magicka skills) would be nearly equal footing single stat invested characters.
