Does Magicka DK feel like a true mage?

blaineswing_ESO
Does it feel like a fire mage? Or does it feel like a melee class that is dressed like a caster? I saw a video of a guy playing one and he had to be in melee range the entire time.

PvE, by the way. Also, new here.

So, Sorcerer is the only one that will truly feel like a ranged mage character?

What about the Warden? I saw that it has ice magic.

In essence, if you are coming here from games which have "AD&D" type mages.... (WoW, RIFT etc.) - no. There are no "real mages" such as you might expect.

There were mage-archetypes in the single-player games (more or less.... TES is.... a very odd sort of beast when it come to stereotypes) but ESO is quite different from the SP games. And with the upcoming changes, it's going to be even more the red-headed stepchild.

I think the sorc (magsorc) is the only one which will feel like a "real mage" - and with that one, you're going to have to double-bar both the matriarch and the clannfear. It's not ideal. And it's still not a "real ranged mage".

Warden's ice magic option is tanking pretty much. And that's not ranged. That's taunting, up close and personal, holding aggro....

There's nothing really like a ranged mage class in this game.

No, you don't need to use pets at all to perform well on a sorc. Mag Sorcs are as close as you can get to the real ranged mage, followed by magicka NB which is not your average mage. You can be a ranged magicka DK too, but that will limit your options to mostly destruction staff weapon skills.

Well, I speak from my own totally gimped perspective (satellite is my only option for connection - with MEGA ping a reality at all times). So yeah, the pets are a necessity for me, I wouldn't ever attempt to play magsorc without them (ditto warden....) The pets are run sever-side, so mitigate my abysmal lag some.... not a lot.... but some.

My magdk became a lot more fun when I dropped whip and stated to use burning embers as a spammable.

Honestly only the Sorcerer feels like a mage in this game, if that's what you're going for. MagDK feels good to play but they are a melee class.

As for your question about Warden, they are more of a "nature" class. They do have a Ice skill tree but it's not for damage. You could make a ice mage work but it will perform worse compared to Fire/Shock staves. Also avoid the Tri Focus passive under the destruction staff skill tree or simply don't heavy attack with your ice staff.

By this is meant if you are in group content, and you have TriFocus slotted, and an ice staff active, you will pull aggro off the tank.

    NOT a good thing.

To me, any of the classes except DK can feel like a "real mage".

But I'm using the term broadly; to me, a D&D cleric or druid or bard feels like a "real mage" too.

E.g., I really like the feel of the warden class, and regret that it's so weak based strictly on the numbers. A sorcerer feels like a mage. A nightblade feels like just as much of one. And a templar definitely does; I can't imagine somebody disagreeing unless they draw a cleric-vs.-mage distinction.

TES always had "touch" spells that needs you to be close to the target, so mDKs are as much mages as any other class.
But as for ranged vs melee, only mDK have to be in melee range, while certain builds of Magplars and Magblades can be designed for melee range. Anything else is ranged.

You can play any class as ranged magicka with a staff if that's what you're after. You will have to throw in destro staff skills as well probably to make it work. Since you didn't state to what end you want to use it in, then I will just say that it will be fine for most of the content. Some classes probably won't do well as ranged magicka for end game vet trials. But for the most part, all classes can be made to work for that play style.

I currently have one of each class set up this way, but I play casual content. Some of the classes suffer for not having a ranged class ultimate. You can cover that issue with destro ultimate, meteor from mage's guild, or soul strike.

Hell yeah, that's why mDKs are so fun to play! Their max range is 8 metres, that is a little more than true stamina chars have to be closer, meaning you can be versatile. If your tank is a DK, you can ditch engulfing flames for Scalding Rune and Burning Embers for Flame Clench then Whip for Crushing Shock/Ele Weapon to stay at range, if you reaaaaly need to.

Indeed. You can spec a Templar nicely as a mage, cheaper skill cost than sorc too; some might also say more utility.

The game is still missing a 'bard' and true 'spell sword'. In my opinion the only viable (by design) hybrid class concepts from the SP games that would fit in an MMO if designed properly. Will we ever see them? probably not.

To me the Mag DK feels more like a God of Fire than a mage. Especially when running Grothdar.
