What redeeming qualities does this game actually have?

It's my first MMO. Been playing since June 2018 I think. I'd say no good at all has come from it. The opposite really. Nor the new girl. I need to delete it entirely. I suppose one could look at it as a catalyst to demolish the old and usher in the new... if one likes to see silver linings.

ESO is something that my wife and I can enjoy together. It was because of ESO that I bought a second Xbox; we have both consoles set up in the living room so we can group and quest together. If there's a downside, we both spend too much time playing ESO, sometimes to the exclusion of other hobbies.

you have a wife that wants to play games with you, that's just great. if she is good in other ways too, it's perfect really. does she also not nag you about cleaning and also not wanting you to attend family parties all the time?

Mostly just a realisation that you all guys are ***. And so am I.
I think this game actually made me more bitter and worse person overall.

    (clearly a joke)

It kept me connected to the world while I worked my way through graduate school. My days and nights were so busy during those two years that I almost never saw friends in person, and had essentially zero social life to speak of. By virtue of being playable whenever I had a little bit of time, whenever that might be, ESO filled a really important role for me: it was my main interactive hobby and, simultaneously, it was my chance to socialize with my guildies, some of whom are real-life friends who I basically never could work out a time to see in person. It allowed us to maintain our friendships during that period when, had ESO not been in the picture, it's entirely possible we would have drifted apart due to lack of contact.

While I don't have the personality traits that MMORPGs (this one included) tend to use as anchor points for game play loops and thus don't find myself as invested in this game as some do, it's still a game I enjoy well enough, and the the ability to meaningfully socialize with others while I play a game remains incredibly appealing to me. I had wondered if I would stop playing once I graduated, and yet, here I am. Clearly ESO is doing something right.

Because ESO has so much to offer different play styles, my wife and I both have aspects of the game we love. I’m thankful for the countless hours of fun we have had together in the last 5 years playing. I’m a big believer that couples who play together, stay together.

...or one ends up one the couch for telling his wife she can’t hold agro but I digress... “Untaunted, untaunted! @Shimmer

We’ve also been able to play with family members and maintain friendships when having to move around the country.

We’ve met some genuinely great people while playing, and hopefully brought some humor into other players lives by sharing our misadventures in the “Differenty Geared” video series.

This game really does have a great community.

Can't claim to have actually met mine in ESO, because we were already friends online, but the time we spent playing and regularly talking over voice comms brought us closer to the point where we realised that we wanted to be more than just friends. :)

It's a game. It's not supposed to have any. It's main purpose is to entertain people, and to let them spend their free time in the game and buy things from crown store.

Yes, it is pretty much intended to be entertainment. It fits that bill very well.

Name something this game has done to make you a better person or helped you in some way with a real life situation. Anything at all. I would love to hear about it.

I learned how to slaughter people and use their skins as clothing. A valuable skill in Real Life.

ESO has the largest scale group PvP that I’ve ever played. Lots of other games offer small scale, but this is the only game I’ve played where we can have over 100 people fighting each other from 3 factions trying to take/hold the last emp keep. It’s pretty amazing in my opinion. When we don’t all lag out anyway! :D

The beautiful blue skies of Summmerset and Glenumbra rains helped me not shoot myself* during our very smoky summer and fall. Orange-brown sunlight gets really old after a few days :D Same with the constant whine of air purifiers.

Same here. Any game might have been able to fill that role, but ESO was there, and I have to think the sheer size of the game, and number of different things to do, made it the right thing at the right time.

These are not things that ESO taught me, but it strengthens those for sure. Patience (loading screens and lags), not giving a F about people who just want to make you angry, that even when [snip] happens - don't loose your grip, be kind to people, have a goal in your life - one day you will reach it, don't believe in everything that some random person wrote on some game forum.

I do it like the Elder Scrolls told me. I go into the woods and just start eating everything. Leaves, Twigs, Feces, Spidereggs. Then when I know how they taste, I cook them together in a pot over a fire and drink it.
Another useful lesson taught by the Elder Scrolls.
