This may sound like a newbie question but what is the difference between a static rotation and dynamic rotation when doing a dps parse? Like defines the two and can you give examples?
static is like going through a list of things in a certain order and once you're done you start from the beginning again and just keep repeating. dynamic is only recasting abilities when they run out/when they're about to. for static rotations you just try to minimize downtime of things and minimize obercasting when designing the rotation.
A static rotation is a short series of skills, usually 6 to 12, that are repeated in the same order. This works better on some classes than others because of how class skill durations align with other skills. A dynamic rotation means casting skills in a different order as their durations run out. Dynamic rotations may or may not repeat eventually, but you’re not memorizing the order, it’s actively managing DoTs and buffs.
As an example a simple sorcerer static rotation is: Lightning Flood, Unstable Wall, Force Pulse X 4, repeat. This works because the 2 DoTs listed are both 6s long and therefore get recast in the same order every 6 skills. If you add in other skills with different durations then you would need to either recast some early or let some fall off before recasting to keep a static rotation. Or you could go to a dynamic rotation to get better uptimes at the expense of it being much more difficult.
