So I know how rumours can be just those & we shouldn’t believe everything we hear. But I would be remiss not to mention it.
There’s a widely spread rumour floating around that in time for the next chapter (June/July) that Zos would be merging console servers into 2 rather than 4 (the combinations of merging servers is heavily debated)
Obviously this is to be taken with a large pinch of salt but I wanted to make this post to see if anyone outside my circles have heard this rumour?

I would support such an action as console populations are struggling

Like on PC there could be same char names on both platforms servers (NA/EU). That would be a big problem...

There is only 1 server per platform/region...

This has been heavily discussed as well as the possibility of players having characters on both servers for their respected console. It does seem problematic & probably impossible. I just wanted to play Nancy Drew & find more information & see how widespread said rumour is

Interesting. Goes well with rumors that XBox is flagging. Merging servers with PS4 or PC could help sales.

I used to think so also, but, I kind of appreciate now being able to go from the NA to EU servers and have a different game experience...

it's non-peak hours when I play on the EU server and it feels nice to have most of the zones to myself...

plus, playing pvp during non-primetime hours makes gives the alliance war in cyrodiil a much more "personal" feel to it...

That would be the least of the problems. They could just put a ps4, xbone, or pc tag on the name, and problem solved...

I don't see that ever happening. Both console service providers would have to agree to the former, and MS would have to agree to the latter which would have the added problem of unbalanced PvP between those with addons and those without.

However, merging the XBox NA and EU servers is another matter altogether, and eminently more feasible I would suggest.

Nonetheless, I would take the whole thing with an enormous chunk of salt in the absence of any official announcement. One player's tittle-tattle isn't something to get too excited about, especially as his stated reason for planting the rumour was to see if anyone else had heard it, and so far no-one has come forward and said they have.

Assuming the servers would likely be located in the US I don't see anything other than a negative impact on EU players.
Merging them doesn't make sense to me unless player numbers are so low the options are merge or leave a market which I don't believe to be the case. The only case I could possibly see this happening is wanting to leave the EU due to the stuff whirling around purchased rewards like Crown Crates coming under gambling laws. Even then it seems better to me to just not offer Crown Crates in the EU than merge the servers.

This, now add that upcoming next gen will be both backward compatible because same architecture but using significantly stronger AMD cpu who has also become strong players in the pc marked will resolve lots of the issues.
No as an pc player I don't hate consoles anymore they are just like mac, having another OS and play with other rules.
Silently replacing an HD with an SSD while adding an 8TB backup and media drive.

Unless I'm mistaken, the NA servers are in Texas, the EU servers are in Germany. So barring some kind of quantum entanglement system, those aren't getting merged.

I had the same question back to 2015 when transfering chars/accounts from pc to console ended.
Many players wanted their account transfered after the time limited process.

It turned out, it was not possible to transfer accounts again.
Databases are more than just rename some strings.

Why would they do that? The whole point of regional servers is to minimze lag.

If they merged servers and went with their US data centre, all their European players would have 250+ ping. If they went with their EU data centre, all their NA players would be stuck with 250+ ping. They would effectively lose half of their player base if they merged servers, which means they won't be doing it.

You just transfer the character data from one server to the other. You don't physically bash two sets of hardware together until they create one entangled mess. Game developers have been merging servers since time began. Or at least since MMOs began.

I'm hanging onto my popcorn until such time as there are twice as many players interacting half as fast in Cyrodiil as they do now

Thank you for reading my post! I’m disappointed by no one else hearing this rumour, as I had only been informed by 2 different people but no one could give me a credible source (although these two are my friends & know very well).

With the lack of confirmation from anyone else, I will put my hopes to bed and start focusing on the teaser they revealed shortly after I made this post 👍

The problem with merging PC and Consoles is that PC has ability to use Add-Ons where Console does not. This is just ONE issue of merging PC with Console.

I fully support a merged server between PS4 and XBox One

If they were merging servers, I bet it would be PS4 NA and Xbox NA. And EU PS4 and EU xbox. Not EU and NA servers though, that would cause too much lag.

Definitely increase to 30. ZOS monetization would be such that they would demand you either pay for any characters in slots over the number paid, or delete characters until they fit in the account. ZOS would be willing to help in both efforts. However, game play people at the studio will probably be able to convince them to just (1) not let you play any of them over slots paid for, or (2) not be able to create any new characters until you dropped below the number you had paid for. (Edit: if the devs win, it will cost them 2 vacation days, and afternoon snacks until character slot sales rise above a certain level)

I don't think Xbox is flagging, it's just white noise. That's personal experience but also as a bit of a litmus test look at the number of views of patch notes, Xbox is way higher than PS4 is we comparing the two.

Back when the original Everquest started dwindling in population, they started merging servers. What happened with the duplicate names was the senior player with that name got to keep it, and the newer player got an "x" tacked onto the end of their name. And they offered that character the option to change their name for free every time they logged in, until the player clicked the "no" box on the popup. Like, if you had a character named Nose, and somebody on the other server who had been playing longer had that name too, your name would be changed to Nosex. It made for some pretty funny names.

Character names and there is a reason they don't sync data between EU and NA. It's expensive in AWS and the server side of the software is probably not fixed for it. And character name conflicts.
