How would you change the champion system?

I love the current CP system. When I PUG it's a visible indicator of how long someone has been playing the game. I know it's not ideal as there are plenty of useless 810s running around, but if I'm in a vet DLC dungeon I know that CP99 dps won't be any use.

I love the incremental upgrades to damage and survivability. And the small QOL things like "2% mounted speed" and "occasional double herbs from harvesting".

Works great for me. Wouldn't change a thing.

I like the CP system as it is. I just wish they would do away with the 3000 gold sink when you want to make adjustments. It would be fun to play around with the effects of CP allocation on various builds without being punished for it. :/

I personally think they really got it right with the CP system. It's one of the best progression systems I have ever seen in any game. Sure it allows more combat power but that's the point. It takes a long time to get to max CP and that should mean something. I have played for years because all that time, I was progressing and becoming more powerful. Take that away and people won't play this game very much after they levelled to 50 or wherever combat progression stops. I think it would have been interesting to ask people how many CP they have as they gave their suggestions. I wonder, given the communities usual intolerance for nerfs, how many 'nerf CP' posts are coming from people at the lower end of the scale and see it as too much of a grind to get to max level?

If you think that completely reworking the system is about nerfing everything to the ground then you are missing the big picture. It's not about nerfing stuff. It's about actually giving the power back to the classes. People don't want more sustain by a stupid boring star that gives u more regen. They want powerful class skills to give them more sustain giving identity and power to the classes. Thats just one example and there is nothing shocking about that.

If the whole point of the CP system was to provide character customization, which it was, then it's implementation was 100% off target. There is nothing fun or customizable about some boring percent amplifications to everything just to make ur numbers bigger which then ends up getting everything nerfed to compensate.

It would be a biggest mistake to remove Champion System.

Most players have spent huge time to earn those CP.

    CP system may needs improvement.

ZOS should focus on creating more diversity in combat, this includes sets, abilities and passives.

I also want the unbalanced stat increases to be removed from CP. If not, then I want the ability to change some kind of over world setting so regular mobs hit a lot harder than they do. I want that sense of danger back. Questing, for me at least, is no fun without it. I would love to see cool game play changes added to CP, instead, like adding a scope to your bow so you can zoom in and aim better. Additions that resemble how modders changed the Skyrim perk system.

I also hate that there is just no fun in the CP system once you reach CP cap. I am the casualest of players, often taking breaks for months before doing a little questing content here and there, and, for years now, I have never found myself below the CP cap. This means that for one day, after new content is released, I can assign 30 points to some boring stat advantage and it's done. There is no sense of reward at all as I level up and gain points because I can't even spend them when I get them. That said, there is nothing really exciting to spend them on, even if I could.

I am honestly kind of shocked nothing has been done about this yet. It's been such bad system for so long, decreasing the games fun much more than it's increasing it. I know a lot of the devs have high CP characters themselves. How can they not see things for what they are? It's really puzzling to me.

I... wouldn't. The Champion System is at a place right now where it's pretty well-tuned and where you're usually encouraged to spread points around to get the best loadout for your build. I think the "power creep" issues are well behind us at the current cap since now we're looking at getting fractions of a percent increase on most things, ultimately winding down the long-term impact of the system.

I might, if anything, make the acquisition scaling even more forgiving than it already is, so that people get to cap faster. I don't want to see people getting burned out grinding all the more easily just because they're not at cap when they haven't even done the content they're grinding for yet.

CP should absolutely not be about "Specializing" into one boring role. CP is fine how it is although some stars could use some more diminishing returns perhaps.

I see your point. What about forks, so not everyone can have everything?

People already can't have EVERYTHING. becuase of how classes work. and how you can only slot 12 skills at a time. isn't that enough? the nice thing about ESO is how progression allows you to have most things over time, how about we don't ruin that.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

As a minimum i'd get rid of percentages and make it straight up jump points. You can "improve" stam regen 15 times and make the point cost clear.
This right here would be one of the best things they could do with the CP system.

I've played since beta and I can't help but think the vet rank days were better. I wouldn't miss the CP system if they got rid of it.

I'm in the camp that believes that having the same character progression system for end game PVE and PVP is never going to work - and this is true of the CP system. PvP and PvE are fundamentally different games - the end.

I think having CP progression for PvE and Battle Spirit progression for PvP, for example, would work a lot better.

A minor change suggestion would be the ability to set up and save different CP profiles that you could switch out for not too much gold - say for different trials and PvP. As it making changes to the CP allocation is kind of a hassle with a gold hit and mostly I don't bother - even when I should.

I don’t see a problem with “power creep”. Just design the encounters with more strategy and less “dps fast so we can skip the one shot phase”.

@Tasear If you're asking this, I suppose the Devs are wanting to change the System to something better, right?

Some ideas presented above (by players) are good, others are not.

I think the combat bonus shouldn't be totally removed. In my opinion, the system should be broken into several pieces:
    • If we look at The Mage > The Apprentice, we have Elemental Expert. Elemental Expert could be broken into four stars: "Flame Expert", "Frost Expert", "Shock Expert" and "Magic Expert". If you want +15% damage bonus with Flame, Frost, Shock and Magic, you will need 400 Champion Points, not 100.
    • Other stars that could be broken into several pieces: Mighty, Precise Strikes, Elfborn etc.
    • Master-at-Arms, Thaumaturge, Elfborn and Precise Strikes max bonus: 15%, not 25%.
    • Physical Weapon Expert and Staff Expert max bonus: 25%, not 35%.
    • Well, Physical Weapon Expert and Staff Expert can also be broken into several pieces: each type of weapon.

Change it from direct percentage boosts to spending cp to purchasing additional skill morphs.

More healing on this skill, an extra target on funnel health, turn jabs into a more powerful single target skill but give up the aoe and maybe heal, stuff like that.

Cp and power creep are fixed. Note sure how big a deal it is. Mabye someone can stop by with a chart or something.

I thought the last time cp was changed they pretty much put cp on in a vise. Diminishing returns and all. As soon as the lower end of the cp trees are full the creep will slow way down. And like i said its fixed so power creep can only go ao far.

This is going in a strange direction....

Do be clear I asked how would you change system if you could.

Yes, that was clear and as threads go, I think this is a good one. I wasn't shocked by the thread, just at the number of posts on it calling for CP to be abolished or nerfed.
It would be a shame if the takeaway from this thread (back to developers) was that a large number of people want rid of the system. And to be fair to all such posts, abolishing or nerfing CP technically would be changing the system

Aside from never doing it to start with?

If ZOS feels the need to have the mega grind, have it just give you a little more resources for each point to a total of an extra 10% of all three resources at current point cap. They might be able to handle balancing something that simple and I wouldn't have to switch my points every time I go from PVP to PVE.

This from a guy with 1.3k+ points. Just because I have a lot dosen't mean I like them.
I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.

The only issue I have with the system is that they increase it every three months. When I started back in September last year, it was at 660. Now it's at 810. I'm currently at 710. But it just feels like a never ending marathon to get to max. Set a cap and be done with it.

    Leave it as is.

    However ....

Players that are not at the CP cap should be awarded a lump sum amount of CP points (sliding scale).

Players who have reached level 50 and are:
    • under 100 CP points get 600 CP points;
    • under 200 CP points get 500 CP points
    • under 300 CP points get 400 CP points
    • under 400 CP points get 300 CP points
    • under 500 CP points get 200 CP points
    • under 600 CP points get 100 CP points
    • 700 CP to current CP max get 50 CP points
There is a catch to this, however. To qualify for the lump sum of CP points you have to have completed Cadwell's gold.

You can only qualify for the lump sum amount 1x per account.

This should help level the playing field regarding CP ... at least for the next couple of years.

Exactly what this guy is saying. The cp system broke the heart and soul of this game . Along with how one tamriel was implemented. The game is a homogenized waterd down meta chase. I hate to say it but this game has not evolved or emerged at all . It actually went backward in 2017 and 2018. The best way I can describe it is zos has created a two foot deep ocean in all directions.with every dlc or chapter ot just gets bigger not deeper nor dangerous the farther you go.

    Didn't we do this already?

Anyway, QoL end, I'd change the UI so that you're purchasing full percentage points, rather than fractions of a percentage which then get culled by the game's math and do nothing. This would mean you'd be spending multiple CP with the same (or similar) costs as now, but with a cleaner UI telling you how many points it costs to advance. (Not sure whether this should be a piecemeal progression, where you're spending each point individual, or if it should be, you spend 15 points at once.)

On a larger scale change, I'd be seriously tempted by a skill-web system. It would, probably, be a better fit for the constellation element of the star theme, and give us more coherent ways to shape a character off of the system (assuming it was arranged in a reasonable way.)
