Is this allowed - levelling Legerdemain by resetting the chest quest?

1) get the "The Trial of Five-Clawed Guile" quest from breda
2) go to Reaper' March quest starter and start the chest picking quest
3) pick lock only the 2 hardest chests out of the 3
4) run away to reset the quest
5) repeat 2-5

Why wouldn't it be? It's not a very efficient way to level that skill line.

Tis rather a long and unprofitable way to level your pocket engineering yes.

Much better to 'clean up' the boats in Daggerfall harbour - then you can sell what you find.

You may need to take a class or two at The Santie Claws College of Pocket Engineering perhaps?

If the game lets you do it then I suppose that’s “allowed” by definition. The developers had plenty of time to think about that and prevent it from happening if they didn’t intend it.

I actually wouldn't know on that one. It's clearly not intended behaviour and would fall under the broader definition of exploiting. However what it's doing isn't exactly efficient or game breaking, so I don't know if ZOS would care.

Kind of falls under one of those "things people abuse all the time" categories which should be an exploit, but doesn't seem to actually be one.

Whether or not you want to do it is up to you though. You could always try contacting support and asking about it, however I am not sure if the support staff are qualified to tell if you something is an exploit or not.

Although sometimes it seems silly with what the issue is, it's the best way to play. If something doesn't seem intended, better to bug report and move on.

i doubt there'd be any repercussions. it's not a very efficient way to level legerdemain. I'd recommend what @SantieClaws suggested if you really wanna get that leveled.

Since there are significantly faster ways to level legerdemain, i dont think ZOS would care. Also, your activity is not impacting on others, like say if were camping a node and mot letting others farm it, so even more a reason for them to ignore it.

If you want to power level Legerdemaain, make your way to Daggerfall, and loot the two ships at the docks near the wayshrine. Grab everything, Fence the valuable stuff, Launder the Provisioning Ingredients and Mats. You can max out your days limit in about 15 to 20 minutes. If you need to, you can go back to the ships and they will havr reset.

It might seem faster to get the 3 and 4 points for each chest open, but factoring in the time it takes to ride to cell refresh, and all the other fun stuff you can be doing, ship looting is better overall. Plus you can rake in 1000s in Gold.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    That sounds tedious as hell.

I imagine it’s allowed because there is literally nothing gained but experience, which is more easily gained through other means. There’s no chest loot, no gold, no quest completion, and it’s a less effective I’ve way to level Legerdemain than pickpocketing/killing NPCs and fencing the loot.

Seems fine if people want to do that. It's less efficient and less profitable than just running around IC sewers.

No guards on the ships traveller …

This, just stealing stuff is more profitable and more fun.
If you have Orcinium you can steal there instead, much more containers.

Note that you can launder 100 items after selling 100 items to fence, the laundered items can be sold to an trader afterward so you go break even here, this is an way to double your ledgerman xp.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Do Undaunted Pledges or any dungeon raids.

Inbetween dungeons rob the food of the Undaunted. Repeat after every dungeon and launder it afterwards. You would get a small bounty, which is gone next day.

It would be almost impossible to prove that someone is or is not using that quest as a bad way to level legerdemain or just suck at picking advanced locks.

If there was a way to circumvent the timer or spawn more than the 3 chests there, that would be easy to prove and against code of conduct and tos.

I think if they did observe a player in this situation they would not do anything because 1. its super slow and 2. it's a limited time event

it seems like making loops around kenarthis roost or your zone of choice to lockpick actual chests with loot in them would be a much better time. or alternately make a loop lockpicking various closed doors in human cities log out, log back in repeat. still seems much faster then lifeday chests.. AND you get achievement out of it.

note that I'm bringing up methods that techincaly do not have daily limits like fencing does. heck even pickpocketing your way through cities once you level up your legerdemaine a little seems better (each sucessful pickpocket is 1 xp)

If that's the way you want to level Legerdemain, then I suggest, Find a zone with gear you want. Why? because at least you get something out of it. If you plan on living life in the shadows, then you will need some gear to help you along. Night's Silence (Crafted - Movement Speed), Night Mother's Embrace (Dashaan - detect radius), Shadow Dancer's Raiment (Greenshade - Movement Speed), or Night Terror (Stormhaven - detect radius) have nice buffs for the shadow walker in you. And sense chests have a chance to drop every piece of gear including jewelry of the zones they are in, you are better off heading to one of the three zones and looking for chests. It won't take very long to learn the chest locations (and you can find maps online, if you are on console, if not get an addon). So, I would suggest Night Terror and depending upon whether you are stam or magikca, Night's Silence for stam and Shadow Dancer for magikca.

I’ve let the chests reset over and over to get the related New Life achievement of unlocking all three in under 35 seconds. I never thought of it as an exploit. I got the achievement by the way. *shrugs*

Its a pretty stooopid way to level your legerdemain... there are far more profitable options.

Like the mentioned picking clean the daggefall docks, all those stealables in unguarded ships, they are practically asking to be carried to the nearby fence! And you earn some shiny cion as well, also the occasional nifty find if you get lucky... the maormer embassy on kenarthis roost post-story is also empty of guards, but has less stealables then all the ships on the daggerfall docks.

Or making the treasure chest circuit, there are a few areas in certain regions where you can run around and practically -never- run out of respawning chests to find and lockpick, and you get stuff from the chests to sell as well! (and eventuially, an achievement)

There also is mass slaughter of livestock and laundering all the stolen guts...

But generally, legerdemain levels all en passant while doing your usual "undocumented wealth redistribution", so its barely worth even considering grinding per se...
