I've never used Steam for anything. I didn't like their EUL and can't see why you would want more software between you and the real product/game. I currently invoke the ESO exe directly unless I need to update then I use the launcher which brings to another gripe. Why can't ZOS like every other game out there give me an option to exit the launcher after the game is loaded? All it takes is the appropriate exit or return statement for the language being used.

Yeah, I think most people who play MMOs don't want extra "stuff" between them and the game. It just complicates things.

I'm not sure why ZOS doesn't add an exit launcher option. I know you can tab out and close it yourself, which I do and have done for a long time (vaguely remember something about a memory leak associated with the launcher).

A lot of ppl not on Steam are going to ignore this thread, because it mentioned Steam. So I think your results are going to be padded toward the Steam launcher. Ppl are going to see Steam and think "oh, that's for Steam users only." Some (less informed) non-Steam players don't realize that Steam players don't have a choice, and may assume that you are polling only Steam players.

I played ESO before it was out on Steam.

I never understood why/how STEAM gets by. If you want a game, buy it. When you interject a 3rd party into the mix like that you just asking for issues IMO.

What does steam offer ESO players that the stand alone launcher does not?

bought through steam a few years ago though only just started playing last year.

I can recall only once having real login issues with steam, mainly I think it's when steam does their updates it interferes with logins.

I feel for the steam players that have a harder time than I do :(

Never understood why players would use steam on PC?Mac when the game has always been available direct since beta. Why add an extra layer that could cause potential issues?

    It's not a choice.
Once you've bought the game via Steam, you're stuck with Steam (at least since some time around 2016).
And the truth is, the game is very often on sale very cheap on Steam. So there's that.
Now the base game is also very cheap via ZOS, but it has not always been the case. And packages like base game + extensions and/or DLCs are also cheaper on Steam.
I hate those trap and non-transparent marketing strategies, but the reasons why players fall for them make sense.

I think the poll was worded in the best way possible. I see no conflict.

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the game, and for $12 it was worth the price to try it out. If within 2 hours I could return it, otherwise I have never really had issues with Steam games.
Also ESO is/was my first MMO, so I didn't fully realize or understand things about other launchers with the game. But I do now download/purchase MMO's directly from websites. Did the same with PoE after a few hours of playing it on Steam.

I'm using standalone simply because I didn't buy the game on Steam. GMG offered a nice preorder discount (and I got to keep the difference between USD price and EUR price as a bonus - a loophole that's been fixed since, sadly). ;)

And with all the reports about Steam players not being able to log in, I'm really glad about not buying the Steam version, too.
