What is a fair price for Crowns?

Since Crown gifting became a thing a certain Discord group has sort of insinuated themselves as the go-to standard for gold trading. From what I understand, this group charges a 5% fee for essentially facilitating, which is fine, however I feel that the price they are trying to set as the standard (225g per Crown) is a bit high considering the average time equivalent to earn gold.

As I see it, the whole purpose of allowing people to trade gold for Crowns is to avoid burnout of customers who play the game and even pay a monthly sub but can't always come up with extra disposable income during the sometimes 5-day or less window for limited time offers of things they would really like to have. Being able to spend gold on these things gives them another avenue to not miss out, which is awesome.

The main problem I have with the 225g per crown price point is the time equivalent for how much gold it would take to buy the average special whatever on the store. Lets take the average price of motifs as an example. Some go for 4k crowns, some as high as 6k, but the average for a new motif seems to be around 5k crowns. At 225g per crown it would cost 1 million 125 thousand gold to make this purchase through the 'official' Discord guild.

* The price of 5k crowns (not on sale) is $39.99 USD. This is about 2-3 hours work at a minimum wage job.

* The average time to make over a million gold in-game can be well over a MONTH for the average player.

Obviously this will be a problem once people blow through their initial reserves of disposable gold they have saved, as setting the price that high means the whole purpose of gifting, giving people an alternative means of not missing cool limited time things, will have been largely defeated, since the average player will not be able to keep up earning enough gold for more than maybe one such purchase per month, and even then only if they are diligent about doing dailies on many alts and really making an effort to spend their game time making gold, which most really won't be interested or able to do.

So, what I would like to suggest is an alternate price point more in line with the time investment required to earn gold. What many of my guilds and people I know in-game have come up with is between 150g-180g per Crown. We have had many 10's of thousands of Crowns transacted at these rates and both parties have always come away satisfied.

I get that some people are willing to pay more for a little added security, but I still feel that 225g is pretty steep given the average rate of earning gold. AVERAGE rate, not guild store hero spend all day flipping trades rate. :p

I feel that just like in real world economics, the danger of having only one 'standard' outlet is that prices end up being set too high.

At 150g per crown, that 5k motif would cost 750 thousand gold. So, less than 3 hours at a minimum wage job for probably a couple weeks worth of gold.

This to me seems much more fair. But I would be interested to see where the community stands on this.

A "fair" price is whatever two grown adults are content to negotiate between each other.

You don't have to use any Discord channel or guild to trade. You don't have to trade, period.
That said, TCE has, on several occasions, explained their current rate increase on their Discord channel; by omitting that part of the conversation from your thread you do make it seem like your intent is to portray them solely in a negative light.

Of course this is true. However, the purpose of this thread was as stated, to gauge the general consensus of the community's perception of a fair price.

As for TCE I haven't been to their site in some time, however I was very careful in my wording not to even IMPLY anything untoward going on. You will note there are no references to anyone being 'greedy' or 'monopolizing' or other such negative connotations.

My main goal here in addition to gathering statistics on a consensus was to point out the time equivalents in easy to understand terms. People can relate to 5k Crowns being less than 3 hours at a minimum wage job compared to how long they know it takes them to earn over a million gold, which is intended as a mental aid in calculating what each person then feels would be a fair market price for these exchanges.

No nefarious ulterior motives involved, scout's honor! :)

On one hand, I get your point. 225 is quite steep (I wiped out my gold reserves buying the banker last Black Friday). HOWEVER!

I pay the overhead on TCE for the peace of mind with their guarantee and brokers. I could never trust a random zone seller not to scam, and I'm not in any guild that is facilitating lower crown rates. I guess you're lucky you have them, but for the rest of us we're SOL?

All things considered, basic economics kick in here. The market is willing to bear so the price moves. If you're not willing to bear 225, then you are perfectly able to go shopping for better deals. I would only pay 225 to the TCE precisely because of the service. It just means it will take me longer to get anything. I'm playing the game anyway. Eventually I'll earn what I need.

Your assumption is ppl get gold actually farm it. Ofc we all know a lot gold mat is from bots. And actual gold is from ppl farm trial plunder (i guess stealing too). Botters sell mats to them. And ofc botters don't actually spend the time. This is very much the reason why crown cost more on PC.

My biggest gold source is selling motifs from events. After that, I'm guessing crafting writs, though that also costs inputs.

But as far as I know, stuff costs more in guilds stores on consoles, so it is a little odd that crowns would cost less gold there.

There is technically a gold to crown conversion in the crown store: unfurnished house gold price vs unfurnished crown price.

... Except it ranges from 18.75 to 24 per crown (apartments) to 178 to 316 per crown (notable houses). ZOS isn't the most consistent in pricing but now that I look at it, the range is kinda crazy. 178 per crown for Cold Harbour Surreal Estate, 316 per crown for Hakkvild High Hall.

Hmmm, I don't think we want to peg crown exchange rate on this LOL

I wish we had such prices for PC)) the average is now 300-400 gold per crown. It’s very rare to be able to trade for 200-250 rate. For some folks who play a lot, it’s easy to farm gold, but for average player like me it’s very long.

In PC/EU the going rate is 400g per crown, that would mean 5k Crowns = 2 mil gold. Even at this rate the demand for crowns far exceeds the available supply and people will buy crowns even if the rate is upped to 500g.

One should never spend time farming for gold with the intent of buying a crown store item (saving is okay), as farming gold will become a second job. However, some people have plenty of gold lying around and if they want to exchange it for crowns then it's okay.

The option is predominantly used by people in countries where the cost of buying the crowns in prohibitively expensive (exchange rate, economy and living cost). Countries like Russia, Eastern European countries, Mexico, India come to my mind

You also have to take into account the crown sellers actual perspective. Either they use up their ESO+ stockpile of crowns, or they buy the crowns directly; either way, they spent real money. If I was doing that, I would definitely charge max gold per crown. I want my return on investment!

From this perspective, if you think the crown price is too high and it's only a "few hours" of RL work, then *buy your own crowns*

You need region / platform. Xbox both NA & EU alot of folks sell for 100g.

I'm amazed at the PC prices. Personally i think they are better. 1k crowns is £6 on ESO Plus and 100k gold is easy to make. So its way low

If it takes an average player 1 month to make a million gold then they are doing it wrong.

Presuming the player is established at the game making a million in one week is easily accomplished, if the player has a craft bag and done nothing but fill it up passively (hirelings, deconning purple items etc) over the time they have had it then they can make millions in a day.

I'm good with 200g per crown, as Tamriel Trade Centre has it. If I buy a costume for 700g, I'm gaining a new, dyeable (because sub) item of clothing that I can wear with each one of my toons and create a whole new look for several of my 15 characters. That is definitely worth 140,000 gold to me, which is roughly 2 days of doing daily crafting writs with all of my characters, or selling a couple of rarer motifs or a few pieces of nice furniture or 100 Kuta, etc. I think that is a decent investment. Compared to the guild trader costs of some equipment, packaged emotes or pets, etc. I find it quite reasonable.

I don't think it is realistic to try to compare the time to obtain these resources. In practice it will be more about supply and demand - it's not an ingame transaction, but a player to player trade.

As far as I am aware, even at current prices it is sometimes hard to find enough sellers to satisfy the demand. So no, doesn't sound like the product is overpriced at all.

ETA: I also find the poll options very suggestive/biased. The highest options are still below going rate on some servers, and there is no option for those who think prices should be higher.

Wow you guys on console got it good. PC EU Tamriel Exchange has it at 400/1 right now. When it used to be 325/1 i would do some trades here and there, but after blatantly rising it to 400 i stopped exchanging all together, just not worth it.

I think they should make gifting Crown items the same way you send mail with C.O.D. - you gift, you set the gold amount necessary to pay the gifted content in mail, nobody gets scammed. And you can haggle the price out between you and the person buying before gifting.
The way it is now, I prefer not to use gifting Crown items to sell other people, 1. the gold price is bit too high for my taste and 2. you're almost guaranteed to get scammed and not getting any gold after gifting. Or the other way around, you send gold but get nothing in return.

There is a point where it's more beneficial to earn real money and buy crowns as opposed to farming gold to buy crowns.

Since many people seems to be allergic to working as opposed to farming... the price of crowns will go up.

    ZOS deal with scammers.

If you are buying from zone tell the person you are recording the transaction, and if they actually scam you then just send the footage over to ZOS, get your gold back and they even give you the item for any troubles. I remember Gina saying you could even message her here on the forums and she helps out to deal with it
