What am I doing wrong as templar

cdpaladinc0_ESO
So, I hit CL160 the other day and have been doing stuff like BGS and AvA which has them turned off. I can't do any damage. Everytime I do any damage the enemy (even 1v1) seems to heal for more than I can dps (a non-healer btw). I get dropped in less than a second (https://imgur.com/a/wakzFum) for usually anywhere from 33-50% of my health at a time and I'm lucky to chip off 3%. If I use Snipe, I hit for maybe 3k max while I'm being hit for 10k (full medium armor for stam). Soul shatter is lucky to do 10k damage over 3 seconds.

Is there a guide or something on what I can do to learn pvp and see what I'm doing wrong? I've watched pvp videos, but those people don't seem to have the same issues I am.

Are you a magplar or stamplar?

Your build would be first it seems like and then you can start learning how to use it.

I came here to seek help too. I'm at around CP318 and have a magplar character. In battlegrounds, 1vs1, I am TOAST! I can't do enough damage, I take TONS of damage, and I have to heal about three or four times to get back to max health while I watch my opponents roid out and heal completely in an instant. I can not figure out what I'm doing wrong. I got decimated twice by the same opponent in the span of a few minutes - I was absolutely impotent offensively and defensively. And that was enough to make me put the controller down and walk away last night. I haven't played at all today and I have no desire to play until I know what went wrong with my mag-Templar. I guess I'll post some photos of my stats eventually.

"Snipe" and "Soul Shatter" suggests you are running something very non-optimized. What is the setup you are running - race, armor, weapons, skills, foods, etc?

    Basics for PvP:
    • Run all impen on your gear
    • If you are new to magplar run heavy
    • Run at least 25k health. Magplar is arguably the hardest to learn how to "turn" for new players as their offensive windows are very specific and often risky if you don't know what you're doing. That said, surviving is probably easiest on a magplar once you get to a certain point.
    • Gear wise, try 5 heavy shackle and 3 transmutation jewelry, trans sword and board backbar and either master destro or willpower destro on front bar. Far from BiS but will work until you know what you're doing. Also very easy gear to obtain. Otherwise, 5 brass/riposte and transmutation. Monster set, either pirate skeleton, blood spawn, skoria or grothdar
    • Run Total Dark and use it when your enemy goes on the offensive. DO NOT initiate fights with this.
    • never engage if you are not above 80% health. Ideally be at 100%. This isn't hard to do if your Breath of Life/Honour the Dead is strong enough
    • Watch for Defiles and Bleeds. For now, whenever you need to heal, cast Purify and then breath of life/honour the dead. As a magplar you should probably switch to defensive around the 30%-50% health mark
    • avoid playing late at night. This is when the try hards come out. While you will probably learn faster playing against these opponents, you will be VERY frustrated.

For me, as a mag-templar, both treasure hunter and burning spellweave. Got about 1519 spell damage (I know its low), 49.7% spell critical, 12969 spell resistance. I use light armor for the magic passives.

Treasure hunter is a junk set, you get the same buff from Sunfire and it's morphs.

I mainly play magplar but have started to play stamplar more.

For magplar i play 5 light 1/1 medium heavy and without pariah get 20k+ resistance with channels focus up. I flex between different sets either based on fight type, what sort of players I’m regularly playing against and how I’m performing.

For sustain sets I run either shackle breaker or bright throats set with bright throats being my favourite just now.

For damage reduction I really like pariah set but also use impreg set and fortified brass.

For damage sets in using Inate Axiom or Spinners just now.

For monster set I pretty much always use Skoria.

In terms of pairing I’m mainly running bright throats and axiom with 2 Mag Recovery and 1 Spell damage glyphs and Apprentice/Lover Mundus.

Weapons I’m using fire staff main and sword and board backbar.

    Skills I use
Front bar: Sweeps, vampires bane, purifying light, Jesus beam, blazing spear with Empowering Sweep Ulti
Back Bar: ritual retribution, channeled focus, honor the dead, mist form, toppling charge with bats swarm Ulti.

    For Stamplar

I run a more static set up, and run 6 medium 1 heavy.
Bone pirate with dubious cam drink.
Ravager set with 2 infused and 1 robust jewellery and 2 axes 1 infused with poison 1 nirnhoned disease. Backbar I use ravager 2h.

    Skills I use
Front bar: Jabs, rending slashes, javelin, power of light, steel tornado with dawnbreaker Ulti.
Back bar: vigor, cleansing ritual, restoring focus, forward momentum repentance with remebernece Ulti.

Main thing for both of these classes IMO is lining up the burst you can build with your stun/ultimate.
Keep power/purifying light up at all times, keep dots like rending/vampires going, and use sweeps/jabs in between. When an enemy is off cooldown then stun them and finish them off with spin to win and Jesus beam if they are low.

Stamplar has some really nice heals with forward, vigor, cleansing when it’s down and repentance tied into dodge roll I find survivability nice.

Magplar you can survive for days at times but literally do no offence and get burned down so you need to keep an eye on your surroundings to find when/how you can swap from defense to offends.

To survive in BGs you need a healthy mix of resistance and critical damage resistance (impenetrable).

Example: Opponent has 15k snipe tooltip; you have max resistance but 0 crit resistance: 15k becomes 7.5k after BS, then 3.75 after mitigation. It crits, you still take over 5k damage (a big hit)

Other side: full critical resistance but low armor means 5k+ again.

But mix them and you'll have good mitigation.

-this is about how players mitigate your damage and how you can mitigate theirs. This doesn't take into consideration dodge etc

Try to have all impen gear. Necropotence + Armor Master + 2 Kena feels pretty good on magsorc. It should work on magplar/stamplar as well. just swap out Necropotence for Shacklebreaker.

Your screenshot looks like you don't have nearly enough Impen gear or resistance in general. Those are very high damage numbers you're taking.

Using Snipe and Soul Shatter suggests you aren;t familiar with ESO's combat mechanics. One skill is stamina-based and the other is magicka-based; all of your 64 attributes should be in Magicka or Stamina.

People on videos don't look like they ave the same problems because they are experienced enough to instantly react correctly rather than having to think about it. The two types of templars (magicka-based and stamina-based) play quite differently. Which one do you play?
Make Rush of Agony "Monsters only." People should not be consecutively crowd controlled in a PvP setting. Period.

The problem is, once I get into defense and start raising shields, they CC me and start pounding on me, forcing me to remain in that position trying to keep shields up and heal until all my resources are spent or they damage me for more than I can heal. Shields that last longer than just six seconds would help IMMENSELY. Maybe I should just switch to heavy armor but I will miss the light armor passives.

Crit first armor second in calculating damage ;)

15k tooltip becomes 24k in zero crit resist against a stamplar or stamblades running snipe.

Then if op has 15k armor, while their target has fracture= 9720 then 2h mace drops it to 7776 (11.7% mitigation). 24k times 0.883 (100 minus 11.7)= 21k.

    Op got one shotted ;

Shields under pressure are not going to last longer than 6 seconds even if they never expired by time limit. Run a defensive set or 2. Use CC to turn things around. Block cast HTD.

To be fair, soul shatter is an ult so it scales off your highest stat. It only really matters when you are using cp.

My favorite setup for my Templar is

    2x Malubeth -- Impen
5x Reactive -- Body all Impen
    5x Transmutation -- jewelry/weapons

Sword -- Nirn/powered for the Sword
    Shield -- Sturdy
Resto Staff -- Defending for solo

Jewelry -- Arcane Trait w/Magicka Recovery

    Mundus -- Atronach

    Food -- Tri-Stat Food

You can easily take 4 players with this setup. You are also max resistances with a good 4K Crit resistance with Trans up. If you get CCd, you'll take an extra 35% damage reduction. Talk about tanky :D

Playing a NB in pvp I can tell you how useless it feels being the only one left alive while your side goes elsewhere and with that; at least you could gank someone.

That said; it at least gives a newer player some time to think and see how the class can play.

I also play a stamblade and it sucks being the last one alive on it. I may get away or more often than not im gonna die within 10 seconds (I suck on my stamblade) but on a tank, you know you're going to die but you want to see how long to can last and against how many players. Sometimes you last for a 30 seconds against 7 or you may just bore them to the point they leave. It depends on what you're good at and how you love to play :)

Switching from defense of offense is a tough thing on magplar, so that is expected as a pain point. But I' hearing shields, soul shatter and snipe... and those really don't belong together. Something fundamental is off.

Come on, @Joy_Division , don't be shy to toot your own horn a little, you've earned it! You made a super-awesome pvp guide for newbies, you might as well share it a little.

@cdpaladinc0_ESO and @StarOfElyon I was in the same boat as you about 1 month ago. Couldn't do any damage and was dying in 1.5 secs, wathever class I was playing in pvp. I came to those forums for help and someone pointed me to Joy's guide for pvp. You can read it here :
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/427360/joys-2018-advice-for-midyear-mayhem-event#latest

It helped me a TON to understand pvp's basic mechanics and main differences with pve. It completly changed my view on pvp's gameplay. Now 1 month after, I face almost only premades in BGs and win my fair share of duels (stamDK).

So go make a bucket of coffee and read it all! If you still want advice after this, go check my profile, I made a couple of other threads in the last month and many awesome people gave me plenty of awesome advices.
