If you are a Tank, use a taunt and hit the adds first.

Aggro, or getting the enemies to attack you, works through a taunt (15 seconds of taunt, single target) or through the expedient of hitting them first (usually about 5-6 seconds of "soft aggro" which isn't guaranteed that you will be targeted.) Taunting is the only way to get guaranteed aggro.

If you are a Tank, you need to use one or more of the following taunts.

Puncture - One hand and shield
Ice Staff Heavy Attack with the Trifocus passive
    Inner Fire -Undaunted
    Tormentors Set+ a charge ability

Ideally, as a tank, you also start the battle by laying down an AOE to get initial aggro on mobs and follow up with crowd control. There is no AOE taunt, but you can establish crowd control for the benefit of your group.

If you are a Healer or a Damage Dealer, DO NOT use one of those taunts.

If you do, you will override the Tank's taunt, which means the boss cannot be taunted for about 15 seconds, during which time the boss will run amuck and probably whale on you. It is annoying AF for your group and especially your tank.

Ideally, you also let the tank be the first one to hit mobs with an AOE so the tank can get the initial aggro and establish crowd control to make your life easier.

As a tank main, I will explain aggro mechanics and taunting to you once. After that: "You taunt it, you tank it. And if you run ahead and aggro the mobs, you can survive until I get there. I'm not rushing."

It means you are doing one of three things. You are either:

A.) Running an ice staff and heavy attacking the boss. If you have skill points placed in all of your destro staff passives, that heavy ice attack pulls the boss's attention away from the tank and onto you, which disrupts the flow of the fight. If you really insist on using an ice staff to dps in PvE, you need to remove your skill points from the "Tri-Focus" passive so you don't taunt the boss.

    or

B.) You're running into the battle ahead of the tank, which creates chaos and makes it more difficult for the tank to control the adds. The tank always sets the pace of the fight, followed by the DDs who should be fighting on the opposite side of the boss/mob from the tank (usually right in the butt), followed by the healer who stands behind the DDs and keeps everyone buffed and healed while debuffing the baddies. If you're not adhering to this set-up, you're making life unnecessarily harder for the group and may be why they kicked you.

    or

C.) They're focusing on specifics adds and you're not staying with the group closely enough and pulling other stuff that didn't need to be pulled. A good rule of thumb is to follow in the tank's footsteps. Try to take the exact path they took, in case they were trying to avoid unnecessary mobs (like the initial mobs in Bloodroot).

Good luck out there and I hope this helps.

Yes, if you are going to use an ice staff with trifocus you need to select tank role and be the tank. :)

The reason the tank is best to draw aggro is because tanks are equipped to do so. Taunting is easy. Surviving the full wrath of a boss is much tougher and a great deal of a tank's build is focused on the ability to block and mitigate massive damage while preventing the boss from moving out of your damage dealers' area of effect on the ground damage (killing zone). That means the tank has to stand toe to toe with the boss.

Only if you can take the big hits from everything and stay up, while debuffing the boss. The tank is a damage sponge who takes a beating so the damage dealers can kill without having to block every few seconds and the healer can focus more on buffing/debuffing than constant reactive healing. You need more than just a taunt (from your ice staff) to be an effective tank.

Something to be aware of: I know the ice staff has a really cool effect, and it's definitely nice to have those snares for mobs, but it does remarkably low damage compared to fire (single target boost) or lightning (aoe boost) staves. It's more of a thing in PvP than PvE, unless you're tanking (Mag Wardens make brilliant little ice staff tanks).

You can remove the points from the passive that makes the heavy attack a taunt. Then you will not have to worry about it. and can dps as you do now.

Edit: that is remove points from the Tri Focus passive in the destruction staff line.

It was a poor choice on Zos' part to convert the frost staff from damage to tanking. While they claim they do not want us to re-learn combat when switching between PvE and PvP they have variations of the same weapon do totally different things. Some wonder why I am critical of Zos.
