Why is the maintenance window six hours?

Seems excessive for reasonably designed servers. I can't remember other MMO's above 3 hours off the top of my head - maybe there are some.

    Hopefully they are under promising and will over deliver. If they said 3 hours and were 6 there would be a lot of angry threads.

    They have to at least give the “appearance” that they tried to fix the problems with dungeon finder. Then they can go back home and enjoy the rest of the weekend playing Minecraft.

    Because for US players it is night … and they don't care about the rest of the playerbase.

    Say it started at 4am UTC, it would be 11pm on the US east coast and 8pm on the west coast. Somewhat prime gaming time for them. It would so be 2pm on the Australian east coast. Not matter what time they do it, someone will be inconvenienced and since ZOS is located in Baltimore, they are going to do it at a time that fits them.

    That's so they can fix everything else they screw up with the group finder patch.

    We need a betting pool as to what skills or content gets broken because of the patch.

    From my experience as IT-engineer - when you install big patch or something, you plan 1-2 hours to prepare, 2 hours to install, and then 2-3 hours to restore from backup if patch doesn't work well, so probably since server is not up after 4 hours, they failed at applying group finder patch and now they rollback server to previous configuration :p

    You think they've upgraded to a 486? I was thinking they were still using 386-16's, with a few 386-20's thrown in the mix. At first I thought they were using 286's, but the speed is too fast for that chip, even when overclocked.

    Doesn't matter, though, as I am still using my souped up 8086 with Hercules graphics card, math co, and card drive.

    Most likely, the reason for the 6 hour window is because they are, in addition to the patch (which I belief is only for PC), they are doing important *SERVER* maintenance. The problems with group finder seem to be focused on the fact that the group finder can't handle the number of instances needed for the event during prime time. In order to accommodate the situation, they're having to take the servers down and essentially temporarily rework how the group finder is routing the group to the instances. As this problem effects all servers, even without the consoles getting a patch, they're going to need all servers down long enough to effectively reroute how their machines communicate regarding the dungeon finder. It's really not that hard to figure out, and it makes sense having them all down at once for this.

    (ps, if you aren't sure that it's the prime time overloading that's causing the problem, you might not have seen that, once us prime time --which I watched zone cat regularly during---had constant reports of group finder failing, but as soon as people started going to bed, no one seemed to have any problem at all getting into their randoms. So, yes, it's an overloaded routing problem, and hopefully, they have a way to fix it for you....I'm largely unaffected, due to the fact that I suffer from visual snow which leaves me effectively blind in group content, so, I couldn't participate anyhow, since Zenimax refuses to give us a way to turn off other players VFX...and healers in particular leave me severely headachy and almost entirely blind during the combat).

    My main problem with the timing is, they catter for US players so much, I feel really as a second class citizen. Nearly all US can participate in the yearly big rewards, they have less server issues, they have less prime time maintanance. I remember when EU got so much trouble during an event they had to extend it, but offcourse NA got the extension aswell, so for them it was a total win situation.

    I know there are palyers with worse situation (no Asian/Oceanian server etc), but is doesn't help my second class feeling.

    I think we need to create group at kickstarter, something like "Help Beth buy used servers from Blizz", so ZOS will feel 2nd class too :D

    No, that's not the real question. It's fro 1AM to 7AM Pacific (where I am). It's going to be daytime somewhere.

    No, it's at 4AM Baltimore time. That's convenient for their large US playerbase, not for them.

    Do your preparation while the servers are up. Restoring a backup should not be the norm, actually taking up those house, but the exception for a disaster. So, you don't get to include prep+restore in the normal time it's down.

    It's 6 hours because after they shut the servers down, it takes at least five hours for all the leftover data from Australia to make its way around the world through numerous Akamai servers in Hong Kong and the Netherlands before it arrives at ESO HQ.
