It's no secret that many players want to represent their guilds within their nametag,
without having to visibly wear a tabard. Because—let's be honest—tabards are ugly, low-res, and obscure our lovely costumes and outfits. Previous discussion about how this should be accomplished raised several possible issues:
- The "slippery slope" argument—players would continually demand for more slots to be hide-able
- More developmental work required—to integrate this feature into the game menu options, outfit system, etc.
- Circumventing one function of tabards—as a gold sink
But, after countless long and sleepless nights, I believe I have found the ultimate solution to all these concerns...
Make a tabard variant with no in-game model.
Here's a mock-up of how this might look on the UI:

All it would take to implement this would be to copy-paste the current tabard, and simply delete its model. People would still have to purchase an actual tabard, thereby sinking gold. And this wouldn't set precedent for being able to hide additional equipment slots beyond ones headgear.
It's the perfect solution—no more excuses, ZOS!
