How to tell what type of armor someone is wearing?

Occasionally I see someone with just a pretty nifty looking set of armor on, how do I tell what type of armor it is other than asking them? I've selected the option to view their profile and not seeing anything.

If I understand correctly the "sets like Julianos etc" don't make the look it is the motif type used like Glass or Ebony or Thieves Guild correct?

    Ask.

With outfit styles and 70+ motifs around, unless you are some ESO fashion expert, you can't know without asking. It could even be a bunch of different armor styles mixed together to create a unique look.

I frequently get asked what dye I'm using and I'm always glad to answer. Perhaps the person with the style you are curious about might do the same!

Since what you are Actually wearing and how you Look now are no longer the same thing due to the Outfit system...the only answer to your question is to Ask

That does make it harder as the set pieces don't match the look. Most people do reply just thought there might be an easier way. Thanks.

As other have mentioned—you basically can't tell from a glance anymore, due to most people using outfits and costumes to cover up their gear. HOWEVER, you can sometimes elucidate specific sets that someone might be wearing while fighting them, or observing them in combat, based on the visible effects procced by said sets.

They drop a big firey meteor on someone's head? They're wearing Valkyn Skoria.

They spontaneously become covered in a crust of rock, and feel much tankier? Bloodspawn.

Their hands glow orange for 15 seconds while their damage output spikes? They popped Clever Alchemist.

Little cues like that provide hints to what your enemy is using, and can be vital information in adjusting your approach towards them in a fight.

    Ask.

    Agreed.

Also, playing around in the Outit Stations will get you better acquainted with the different styles.

Yes, between Costumes, Outfits, and crafted sets being whichever style the crafter wanted, you've never been able to tell what set people are wearing. If that's the part you're interested in.

If you're looking for styles, just go to the Outfit station as the previous poster said, and set it to show all styles. You can 'test' them without owning them, and see how they'd look on your character.

Some MMO's have an inspect feature so you can look at someones gear in game. I'm undecided if I think this would be a good thing or not for ESO. Gear combinations seem far more important in ESO than they do in WOW for instance. Quite a few people like to keep their builds close to their chest.

I have gotten quite a few whispers or says about some outfit my characters are wearing. Only I get them when I am AFK. What might be more effective is to send the player an email, as lots of people ignore chat.

Start it out with, I saw your character with the (describe the outfit a little in case they have alts). And was wondering what motifs and dyes you used. You will get more responses that way.

If you want to know what the appearance (motif) is another option is to take a screenshot and then try to re-create it using the Outfit Station or look on websites like ESO Fasion. If you use the outfit station remember some parts may not be available as outfits, for example monster helms/shoulders and stolen clothing.

Also remember they could have combined different styles and armour weights - if it's something unusual it's highly unlikely the whole look is using the same motif or armour weight, so you may have to try lots of combinations to find it.

The best option is always to ask, and like Nestor said send them in-game mail if they don't reply to a whisper because they might be afk or busy with something else. (I'm forever not noticing guild mates who find me in town and spend time dancing/waving/otherwise trying to get my attention - because chances are if I'm just standing there I've got the game minimised while I do something else or I'm not at the computer at all.)

(And don't forget to tell them that you liked the combination they put together - they probably spent a lot of time on it and even if they did it for themselves rather than trying to impress anyone else they'll probably appreciate the compliment.)

Email is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that, thanks! And yes I agree people are taking a lot of time to build their look which I like a lot, there are tons and tons of combinations and nobody looks the same.

I got a Bosmer wearing ragged clothing and looking like a hobo. If what I looked like was anything to go by then I'd be having no armor at all. Outfits and costumes make it impossible to know. (Perhaps we need an "inspect player" option to check gear and compare achievements or something)
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

in PvE there's no advantage that I'm aware of for hiding info about your actual gear from other players since you play against the environment and not those other players. I don't know about PvP because I go there as little as possible, but PvP'ers do look for any conceivable advantage possible over other players. I don't know what they'd gain from withholding that info, but it's possible that may be why a player might not give that info up when in PvP.

The only thing I ever experienced along these lines is that one time I was asked about the shade of blue I was using on my gear, that they liked it. It was the really bright blue that you get from Vvardenfell. I think it may be the end of the main storyline and I can't remember the exact name, but I think it begins with 'V'. Actually now that I think of it, I was asked that same question 2 or 3 times. It was not too long after Morrowind came out.

An Armory that updates similar to WoWs would be nice TBH but I have no idea what it takes to create something like that.

Most of my guys are mix and match on the mog, my main is in five different styles of gear that is a mix of heavy and medium. Some are in costumes though but most it's mix and match mogging.

Ya usually when i ask people what style they are wearing they usually take it as a compliment as they assume you want to copy the look because it looks cool.

Then again there might be that dude that doesnt wanna anybody to look like him lol so i guess its 50/50

If it is indeed what they are wearing and not covered by custom armor from the outfit station, you can ask them to link a piece. I use an addon that tells me the style armor and weapons are, when linked.
