Pretty sure this is the type of video you can judge by a title.

It's not. And it's well worth a watch.

Maybe a different title would've served it better, but after watching it, the title does make sense.

It's a retrospect of Elder Scroll games, and one I watched back when it was originally released. With the debacle that Fallout 76 has turned out to be, it is even more relevant and worth a watch, as it raises some rather good questions as to what people actually look for from an Elder Scroll title and what direction Bethesda is actually moving towards.

It goes over each game in the series, talks about the strengths and weaknesses of each title, what changed with each installment, and does so with an even hand.

The title comes from the theme that slowly emerges as one goes through the games in order - where the series started and the concepts behind it, compared to what the series has turned into and what drives it's design these days.

If you just want the conclusion, without going through the commentary, then you can start watching (or more accurately listen, since the visuals aren't necessary to get the gist of the thing) at 1:08:26 - where it delves into the topic of modding. It also resonates with what Todd Howard stated in that recent interview, where he said something to the effect of Beth liking their editor, and that it enabled them to create worlds really really fast, and why they think sticking with the Gamebryo based engine is a good idea.

However, if you don't want to do that either, then the point of it all can be found in the spoiler below, though it will make much more sense having watched through the whole thing:
"Where Skyrim may have aimed for the foothills and hit its target, Daggerfall had its eyes dead set on the stars. And though missing its mark, it left and impact whose aftershock resounds even today.

From everything I've experienced throughout playing the entire franchise, to all that I've read, listened to and watched, it seems to me that modern Bethesda is trying their best to make the most enjoyable game possible for the widest audience that will have it. And based on the immense success the company has seen over the years, I'd say Todd Howard and the team have done everything they were hired to do, and more.

But it's also clear, [that] whatever grand vision the creators of the series had those decades ago has been progressively walked back with ever entry. So it's inevitable that in the years that follow, newer, fresher and more ambitious games will try to take the crown of RPGs."

And that pretty much is the gist of it, and games like Witcher 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance and Cyperpunk 2077 over the horizon, are doing their best to do just that. Bethesda really needs to take stock and think things through, or they are bound to fall just like so many other giants have done in the past.

I have maintained for years, that if some studio and publisher released a game, that not only enabled modding, but was actually designed around the concept, and launched with a proper modern engine and solid modding tools, then Bethesda would find themselves so much outta luck. Their current games just do not stand tall enough in the crowd of other modern RPG titles. And with all the stuff happening with Fallout 76, and the things it entails about Starfield and TES6, the points made by the video are even more poignant.

The video is a history of Elder Scrolls, through all the games from Arena to Legends and Blades. Who was responsible, what each additional game added and removed.

It is named as it is because the perspective of the video is that pretty much all of the modern Elder Scrolls games do not live up to the two that started the series. Each game after Daggerfall sacrificed something, but also became more successful.

The reason that it is interesting, at least to me, is that it has been a while since I really thought about what the early games had to offer. The video served as a reminder. I don't agree with everything that was said in the video, but I can certainly see how the series has changed for good, and for bad. Essentially, it reminded me of why I found Skyrim to be worse than Morrowind, yet better.

Honestly, it is something people like Rich Lambert and Todd Howard need to view as they ponder the future of their respective projects. Not to be told what to do, but just to see everything in terms of one historical summary of the series.

Did the Elder Scrolls actually evolve from Baldur's Gate, or am I remembering incorrectly, and getting my franchises mixed-up?

I still haven't watched the video. Those folks really need to learn about Marketing; that title turned me absolutely right off, and I haven't overcome that inertia, yet.

No. It was inspired by Dungeons and Dragons mixed with an arena movie that the lead designer liked.
