They have been doing regular maintenance for 4.5 years. Days have changed over the years, but yes.
As far as over long, they avg about 2-3 hrs.
At launch they had 2 a week!!

    Yes.

Sometimes you might go two, or three, weeks without a maintenance, but not when content is still fairly new.

    Yup, every week.

Sometimes they might skip a week on big holidays like Christmas or if they have big game events going on they might skip a week.

Most of the time however, it's on Monday's or Tuesdays. I seen them last for 2 hours up until all night depending on how much you might have to download.

An interesting question is, what do they even do during these 'maintenances'? Especially when they don't apply a patch. We all know most MMOs don't do this every week. And for so long.

"And it's important to state that our decision to go with subscriptions is not a referendum on online game revenue models. F2P, B2P, etc. are valid, proven business models - but subscription is the one that fits ESO the best, given our commitment to freedom of gameplay, quality and long-term content delivery. Plus, players will appreciate not having to worry about being "monetized" in the middle of playing the game, which is definitely a problem that is cropping up more and more in online gaming these days. The fact that the word "monetized" exists points to the heart of the issue for us: We don't want the player to worry about which parts of the game to pay for - with our system, they get it all."

No, I don't, seeing as I play this game on and off and pretty rarely, but I do check the forums more or less often.

After a New Patch went Live, like murkmire did a few weeks ago, then they will have 3-5 weeks with PATCH maintenances.
They try to sort out alot of bugs which went trough from PTS, and do some minor balance changes (like the enchant nerf on ST dots)

Normally there is also a SERVER maintenance each weak, if they have a Patch maintenance than thas most of the time done together.

Times can vary a lot, Main Patches might take 4-8 hr, while patch maintenance is mostly arround 2-3hrs as is server maintenance.

    YES. Weekly.
It's just as regularly as people come here and ask "Are weekly, overly long maintenances a regular thing here, or?

It isn't maintenance downtime that's the problem. it's the extra hours post downtime, downloading and installing a 'patch' or content that I haven't purchased, that is the problem.

I use the time wisely and come here instead.

Actually I thought most games did weekly maintenance.

Although my perspective is a bit skewed, because until I started ESO the only MMOs I'd played regularly in about a decade were Guild Wars 1 & 2, and those games don't go offline for maintenance - they take one or two servers offline at a time and all the rest 'cover for' the offline ones so everyone can still log into all their characters while it's going on. At some point you get a notification that a new build is available and then you can log out, update and log back in when you're ready.

So it came as a bit of a surprise to find out that other games still went offline for maintenance, but the way people talked about it I got the impression this was normal for all the other MMOs.

They do maintenance most weeks but maintenance does not mean a patch every time. Today happens to be patch maintenance.

@Leocaran Most good MMORPGs do maintenance very regularly. Maintenance is not just for code updates. It is also for maintaining the equipment that makes up the server including a restart.

Every week, but only few small things get done. Major issues like Cyrodiil or even PvE lag etc. don't get the attention they should. You'd think they're fixing big time with those long maintenances, Everquest II had / has them too, but they only last about 40min and fix about the same amount of things.

My first MMO was WoW. They do weekly maintenance there too, but it only takes an hour or less. I noticed on this game it takes at least 2 1/2 hours, usually longer. If it keeps things running smoothly, I don't mind much.

EvE at one point was an hour a day, it has got better & I would be happy to see that with ESO, if it meant the the hamsters could work well for the other 23hours a day

but it does annoy when the issues reappear as soon as these servers are back online!

Yup, Eve is around 15/20 mins every day, and around a hour or so for big content, but hey Eve has been around for what, 14/15 years as they actually listen to the community and provide intel everywhere.

As far as I understand, properly set-up servers don't need a restart every week. Some work for months without. Am I wrong? So, some suspisions arise if there's something wrong with their servers.
Also, we need to define 'very regularly'. 1-2 times a month is perfectly fine (not counting updates, of course, or including them) and rather regular to me.
Another thing - I thought playing time compensation is a somewhat common practice in case of unsheduled downtime. For subscribers, of course. But not for this company.

Maintenances are a necessity for mmos. I am fine with it and i am rather happy about it. Imagine there would be none and game would be buggy. Also there are games with much longer Maintenance times. I am totally ok with the few hours here.
