What the heck are the treasure maps even good for? What is actually in the chest?

I have never ever even once tried to find one. I sell every treasure map I get in the guild trader for 500 gold, and people buy them!

Is there even 500 gold worth of stuff in the chests?

Depends on what zone the treasure map is for. Treasure maps drop set pieces.

Many treasure chests are a bit... underwhelming. But then, every so often you get something good as well...
Though most times, you find less in a chest then in the drops you get through a few minutes fighting mobs.

I really wish they would make chests feel more like "Yay treasure!", at least the ones from the maps... add more good stuff, stuff that actually is treasure-tastic. Green jewelry for example, if each such chest had a few rings and amulets to decon it would feel a lot more valuable and treasure-ish... or jewelry crafting stuff, a nice bag of silver dust for example would make opening such a chest all the more treasure-like...

Treasure maps are trash. They should guarantee master level chest at least and they give you intermediate. I only use them on new chars while running for skyshards. Still a chore, i wish i can just destroy them, but i'm hamster by myself, i can't bear the thought i miss inferno staff of mother's sorrow in such chest so i need to pick them all ><

I always seem to get pretty good stuff. If I get something I don't need, I sell it for a decent price. No complaints here! And I enjoy the "hunt" for them too.

I'd prefer of Treasure maps had a lot of gold in them in comparison to what they actually have.
Like anywhere from 10k-50k would be a nice surprise, instead of another Ice Staff for a Stamina set.

for ex, you can get MS fire staff from Deshaan treasure map, treat it like lottery ticket.

Let me tell you a secret. While you will be running for treasure maps with your fastest sorc from zone to zone, my fastest sorc will run from Mournhold to Silent Mire opening 10-15 chests without any maps and with much higher % to get gear worth selling. So this maps are simply not cost-effective.

They suck compared to Skyrim, one reason being that they are so utterly uninformative. "Next to rock and tree in Auridon". Great.

I found them useless until I got the addon that shows you where the treasure is on the map. So now I will stockpile them along with surveys, then vacuum the zone in a short amount of time. Too bad you can´t pile the same map in inventory, but you can work it anyway.

Still absolutely not sure it´s worth it, at least it´s faster this way.

Yes, master chests should have the opportunity for HIGH gold return. Say 1 in 100 chance to get 10 to 100 thousand gold. Scaling down so that simple chests have 50% chance to get 100 to 500 gold or so. This would make them more rewarding. Chest hunting/farming might be a legitimate money maker.

Chests from maps should guarantee the gold. Maybe not the high end reward though. Maybe the second tier guaranteed.

To edit that idea further, lets say Master chests always reward 5k gold or so, with the chances of an additional 10k-100k gold.

So, it's basically the same stuff that drops from everything else in the zone. Nothing unique or "treasury."

Would be cool to have at least something worthwhile in the chests from the treasure maps.

The only treasure maps I care about are the Cyrodiil ones, as they give you a chance at getting the alliance motifs

Treasure maps have a 100% for a Malachite shard, although you have a small chance to get them already in normal Intermediate difficulty chests, and very high in Master ones. Besides that, only Cyrodiil and Craglorn ones are interesting I think, as both those zones's Treasure Chests can drop a motif, any other zone isn't really good.
And in case anyone wondered, CE maps are pure trash, only having blue gear without a trait and nothing else. Basically decon food and a big waste of time (or money).

I agree. They are not totally worthless, but zone chests are more frequently found and that makes them better.

I got a purple spinners ring in one which I sold in a trader. On pc use the add on and it’s just a ton of free stuff, some of it junk, some of it useful.

Use all treasure maps that drop for me. Either for deconstruction of items, research or sell items to merchants. The gold adds up after a while.

Treasure chests from maps contain loot of an total worth of roughly 200g. Not considering that some zones will provide set pieces that are more valuable in guilds.

CE chests contain more loot, but never set items.

I use the maps when I have them. I save them up and run them when I'm doing surveys in the same zones. Some stuff is good, some is garbage. Most of them are better than the "generic" treasure chests - though I have had a couple of pretty useful pieces from "common" chests.

Yeah, Collector's Edition maps are worth almost nothing other than decon fodder.

I do wish treasure maps and chests in general weren't so underwhelming. A few zones have decent stuff; Cyrodiil, Craglorn, and Vvardenfell can drop motifs and the rest it depends on what gear is "in". But even with the treasure hunter passive, I rarely am excited by what I find (doesn't stop me from opening every one though because I can't help it). Makes me cringe to think about what might be in those chests without the passive!

Treasure chests in general, and ones gotten from maps in particular ought be a lot fewer in number, but ought to have much better stuff in them.

Less green stuff in master chests, for example.

And as stated above - more gold, and jewelry... a bag of silver dust, rare trait stones... you know - TREASURE, not pocket lint.
