Aside from the main villain being disappointing and looking like a randomly generated character, ya Darien's demise was unfortunate and I like how it sets up meridia as a future villian.

Not sure it really set her up as a future villain, so much as it served as a reminder that there's no such thing as a "good" Daedric Prince. At best, with someone with Meridia we get - to borrow a term from a different fantasy game series - a Lawful Neutral Daedric Prince who will honor her bargains, but on her own terms and to her own ends. Also someone who is willing to do "good" and "evil" things in equal measure if it suits her goals. Azura is similar, just less lawful.

That said, I definitely appreciated the reminder. A lot of people seemed to think that Meridia was basically good, and this was a good way of demonstrating that she most certainly isn't, even if her goals align with yours throughout most of the game.
