I did not start off trying to create a multi-role character. It happened gradually as I've made lots of adjustments over several years. Like everyone else, I have had to roll with the ups and downs of templars strengths and weaknesses; generally more downs than ups. My compliments to our class representatives who have continued to work on behalf of all templars.
Short version: This breton magicka templar is capable of excelling at five distinct roles:
PVE: (1) healing, (2) damage, or (3) tanking
PVP: (4) healing or (5) damage
How? By simply swapping gear, champion points, and food/potions. Let's be perfectly clear - I would never have attempted a multi-role character if addons like
Dressing Room and
ChampionPointRespec were not available. I am lazy; I want to think once, reuse multiple times.
For all the examples below, I've used
Witchmothers Potent Brew - it is relatively cheap and does what we need. For some tanking situations I switch to tri-stat food but rarely.
Race: Breton
I chose a breton for a lot of reasons; most of them not related to the role I wanted the character to perform. Fortunately I was lucky as the breton can be well suited to this role flexibility. Plus she's so cute while tanking vCoS. C'mere sweet meat! In honesty, an argonian would likely be better for the healing and tanking roles. I prefer my breton.
Attribute Points: All magicka - this works for all of the five roles above.
Build #1: PVE Healer
An excellent contributor for trial content. I still prefer Spell Power Cure over Olorime or Jorvuld's. The the Major Courage bonus seems to be applied more regularly with SPC. That's simply my opinion; not proven or tested. Bogdan is a wonderful healing set; it seems to proc all the time. We get very good resistances for light armor and most importantly this build provides lots of magic recovery.
For this build, I use spell critical potions with health and magic.
Skills:
Main Bar: Channeled Focus, Rapid Regen, Breath of Life, Healing Springs, Combat Prayer Ultimate: Solar Prison
Back Bar: Repentance, Extended Ritual, Energy Orb, Blazing Spear, Elemental Susceptibility Ultimate: Aggressive Warhorn
Build #2: PVE Damage Dealer
Just spamming elemental weapon I get 30k dps on a target dummy. This build focuses on critical damage and fire damage. I still prefer burning spellweave as it increases all my damage, not single target damage. And since nearly all damage from this build is a Damage over Time (DoT) I use Valkyn Skoria for the health bonus and extra DoT damage.
I get about 37-42k dps on a 6m dummy; I am sure better players can do more. I'm satisfied with my numbers. Also my recovery is a bit high with the atronach mundus - for a veteran trial would likely switch to the Apprentice for more spell damage or Lover for penetration.
For this build, I use spell power potions with extra critical and magic.
Skills:
Main Bar Inner Light, Purifying Light, Elemental Weapon, Puncturing Sweeps, Radiant Glory Ultimate: Destructive Rage
Back Bar Inner Light, Channeled Focus, Vampire Bane, Elemental Blockade, Blazing Spears Ultimate: Solar Prison
It might be better to use Blazing Spears on the main bar also with its big damage buff and the DoT stacking. I have fun with puncturing sweeps - when it isn't bugging out.
Build #3: PVE Tank
Templar tanking is not dead. I have both stamina and magicka versions of this, and frankly the magicka is better suited to trial tanking than the stamina version. Crest of Cyrodiil is an excellent tank set for templars, providing lots of heals when you block and more stamina recovery. Lord Warden remains my favorite monster set for tanking, providing excellent protection for the whole group. The tanking with an ice staff is perfect for a magplar. The back bar has three synergies for the group, and repentance on the front bar so lots of heals as well as the required tankiness. My original version was plague and fortified brass and I still use that on some boss fights.
For this build, I use tri-stat health potions with health, magicka, and stamina.
Skills:
Main Bar: Repentance, Absorb Magic, Radiant Ward, Pierce Armor, Channeled Focus Ultimate: Temporal Guard
Back Bar: Extended Ritual, Blazing Spears, Silver Leash, Elemental Blockade, Energy Orb Ultimate: Solar Prison
Build #4: PVP Healer
Templars provide excellent group utility and on this build I've strayed from the normal practice of all impenetrable gear to instead focus blocking with lots of sturdy. Lots of group synergies available and most important: lots of recovery.
For this build, I use immovable potions with health and magic. Seems odd; but this is frankly my tankiest character.

OUTSIDE of Cyrodiil.
Skills:
Main Bar: Structured Entropy, Rapid Regen, Aurora Javelin, Healing Springs, Radiant Glory Ultimate: Remembrance
Back Bar: Channeled Focus, Extended Ritual, Purifying Light, Blazing Spear, Energy Orb Ultimate: Temporal Guard
Build #5: PVP Damage Dealer
Heavy armor damage build, very tanky and loads of damage. With structured entropy, we get a nice boost to health and also another DoT that also increases max health by 8%. This build is all about DoT's, and especially fire-based DoT's, which is why Elf Bane is perfect for this setup. The combination of a masters inferno staff and flame enchants make this potent against everything except DK's; have to watch for those wings. For those nasties we have a lightning staff on the back bar with spears and total dark, which is a highly under-rated skill for templars.
For this build, I use immovable potions with health and magic.
Skills:
Main Bar: Structured Entropy, Purifying Light, Vampires Bane, Flame Reach, Radiant Glory Ultimate: Shooting Star
Back Bar: Honor the Dead, Channeled Focus, Purifying Ritual, Blazing Spear, Total Dark Ultimate: Solar Prison
Closing thoughts:
This multi-function templar just fell together; it was not planned - but it works well for all the roles. Truly what makes this possible is the addons that allow us to save gear/skills/champ points. Without those addons and the developers who maintain them, I'd only be a healer.
Bear in mind also that by having 5 distinct setups means I carry around 80 inventory slots full of gear at all times. Then potions/poisons/siege on top of that. Not wonderful but manageable. It becomes a bit of an inventory nightmare; maybe ZOS will give us more inventory. I'm not holding my breath on that one.
I hope that if you've read through all of this you found it somewhat entertaining. I also hope that there are some nuggets of value in here. Perhaps this may inspire you to attempt to stretch the limits of one of you characters - whether it be a templar or other class.
If you have questions or comments, I'd to hear your thoughts. This is by no means the 'perfect' templar setup. Remember its a game and for me, these setups are fun. My builds are in a constant state of flux as I try new gear, new skills, new CP allocations. So in your comments, be gentle. (grins).
I've no problem with people reaching me in game
@Ray.1. Again, I'm happy to answer questions and explain these magplar setups in more detail.
