Who does your character look like?

I was recently talking with a friend about this. I always try to make my character look like me. I don't know why...maybe to make it feel like I'm totally immersed and the one in the game fighting baddies and being a hero. But they always create characters completely different from how they look. It's a role playing game, so why not be someone else, you know, play a different role, they say. So it made me curious as to what other people did because I'd never really given it much thought before. Do you make your character to resemble you? Or do you create someone totally different?

I do this with personas; characters made to represent me in a story. Not in ESO, though! :3

edit: I should mention, though, that all my characters are always female.

I prefer making characters who are completely different people.
Playing myself would be boring in my eyes (which is why Mass Effect: Andromeda's sale pitch was laughable to me). I don't like playing self-inserts or having characters who resemble, but I know some people do enjoy that.
Welcome, Moon-and-Star, to this place where destiny is made.

I play healers or DPS often for vet dungeons and trials (NA, CP810+). I play mostly elves or Argonians.
I primarily play Damage-Based stuff in PvP, but occasionally I'll play something tanky or got the heals.
I also love gaining more knowledge both metaphysical and mundane regarding TES lore.

I also occasionally role-play, but I prefer playing the game.

Haha. I have played a Khajiit in the past, so I guess I shouldn't say I've made all of my characters look like me. :D

I enjoy writing, and I've created short stories that suggest appearances and personalities for each of my ten alts. Much as possible, it's these stories that drive my character customization. Perhaps it's a certain lunacy or just too vivid an imagination, but my alts dictate what they will be and how they appear; I seem to have little control over what actually turns up in game.

I had a friend question whether I was into goth girls. He was taken back when I mentioned I wasn't into that but just liked the look of moody dark elves.

Awesome! I love it when others get real into the stories! ^-^

One thing I never do, is play a female character despite being a male. I know many have nowadays that kind of preference for whichever reason, but that is their choice to meet. Of course, there's lot more freedom available today than in the years past.
Usually I try to fit a character I play to the way I look like, or otherwise the way I could imagine myself being looking like.

My characters are mostly all Argonian, so not like me. Just try to give them all unique looks, usually their role and class influence the design - color schemes picking elements from the class and overall look tied to their role (Tank, Stam, or Mag), whether they are more bulky or athletic or scrawny.

I always make my characters as sexy as possible. They basically represent my idealized male body type. If I get to choose how I look, why wouldn't I want to look like a 10?

I'm the opposite - I never make my characters look like me. About the closest I get is giving one of my main characters long hair (waist length if possible, but in most games I have to settle for just below their shoulders), but hers is straight and black and mine is brown and frizzy.

I never thought about it until I found out other people did try to make characters that looked like them, but I think it might be partially because for a long time I didn't have that choice. When I first started playing RPGs character customisation meant picking a skin and hair colour for the fuzzy pixels and a pre-made portrait for the menu and none of them looked like a little girl. And then in TES games I tend to play khajiit and argonians, so any similarity is out of the question.

Instead I start by thinking about what kind of person I want them to be - I start from why I'm making a character and 'match' everything else to that - their class, skills, appearance, story choices etc. Of course sometimes there's nothing to say they have to look a certain way - when I was coming up with my main ESO character all I got was she should be a khajiit - and then I pick whatever I like or what makes sense to me. I always liked the way the Cathy-Raht are called 'jaguar men' so I made her look like a jaguar (which took a lot of googling jaguars and leopards to make sure I got the right skin pattern).

I never create characters which are inspired by game's lore or history of same game, I usually borrow them from other games or history, movies, books etc and role-play them like "what will happen if Arthas will come to TES lore?"
My chars are from Forgotten realms, Witcher universe, antique history and even Overwatch :D

I try to make characters that reflect aspects of my personality more than my actual appearance. Some are serious. Some are outrageous. All of them have small flaws.

It's funny, but whenever I try to make a character that looks like me, i don't really identify with it. I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way.

Only one of my characters is modeled after someone, Sandor Clegane from GoT. I got as close as I could, the biggest problem being no hair style even close to his. Still, it isn't too bad. The rest of my toons I just made visually appealing to me, wasn't trying to match anyone or anything else.

Funnily enough I usually create a very basic character who looks nice to me. I never make them look like me, since for one I usually play male characters but I'm female irl. xD

Take my Sorc for instance, he's just a basic ruggedly handsome Altmer with a nicely tended beard and well combed hair.
As I played him through his main Daggerfall storyline I added a blindfold and a facial marking to have blood coming from under the blindfold to him. Decided in head cannon that he was blinded during adventuring and now uses his Scamp familiar to help him see through a borrowed eyes ideal.
By the time he'd finished the Daggerfall and Ebonheart areas he had some nice quality armor showing off his prowess and a hood to hide his now mussed up hair since hard to comb ones hair when you are blind and have to borrow the eyes of a scamp to see. I mean heck the beard care-taking is hard enough, the scamp never wants to sit still for long. xD
He's now working his way through the Aldmeri Dominion and he's still evolving. Scars here, markings there, an armor update on occasion.

I just like the idea of making a character and evolving them so they don't really look like anything or resemble anyone.

    The Sorc I mentioned:
