How did you decide to name your first character?

My first char (and my current main) was named after I abused random name generators for a long while. Her name is Malamhin (with a special character i that I do not normally have on my keyboard so I'm just doing to use i). Funnily enough I put it into gogle translator recently and it turns out it either means "unchanged" in irish, "hello" in language I can't remember or, according to google, "smooth brow" in scottish gaelic (which would be right since I used gaelic generator I think).

Anyway that got me thinking that, since my username is Malcadicta and I tend to be called Mal by everyone ingame why not name all my alts names starting from Mal?

That's why I have Maladict, Malifer (latin "birthing apples"), Malady-Not-Talked-About, Malnu'tri Tion (ead this one outloud for best effect), Malacast (demon name)and Malefactor (literally old English for wrong doer).

I kind of collect everything starting from Mal that is not connected to death, disease or evil (since this is a common beginning for words with those meanings in many European languages).
    @Malcadicta - PC EU
Malamhin - dd magsorc Dunmer (main)
Maladict Temperance - healer magplar Altmer
Malifer Viridi - tank magden Bosmer
Malafas Mastiphal - healer magblade Dunmer
    Malady-Not-Talked-About - healer magden Argonian
    Manutri'Tion - dd stamblade Khajiit
Malatesta the Fourth - tank magdk Redguard
    Malcadh - healer magcro Altmer

My main - Varda Sirith Moonstar - has been a character I've played in every FRPG (online and off) I've ever participated in. She was born back in the D&D original box set days and has been with me ever since. So it was natural that she be my main in ESO.

My secondary characters - with the exception of two - are all personalities that have shown at one time or another during Varda's history. Valena Ravenbane; Varda's arch-nemesis and the plane traveling, half-demon owner of the multi-dimensional Raven's Bane Inn. Vallari Sirith; Varda's younger sister who ceaselessly hunts her younger sibling down for - initially - murdering her other sister Qualanthassala (wrongly accused!), and now to put and end to Varda's desire for power and revenge at any cost. Siladhiel Sirith; Varda's cousin and a skilled tracker helping Vallari in her hunt. And so on and so on. LOL

I dunno. I love that Varda is part my life, and I guess in a way I am her and she is me. How I play her at any given moment very much reflects my moods and the many ups and downs I've had in my life. She has swung the pendulum from purest good to absolute evil as I have struggled with my own inner turmoil over who I am and how I want to be in the world. She has been a highway woman, megalomaniac, healer high priestess of Mishakal, loyal ally, manipulative betrayer, dutiful and beloved queen, murderess and player killer, dark seducer, and has even been claimed by the demi-plane of dread (oh Ravenloft! I heart thee) once due to her often cruel, murderous way. :p

Naming characters is still a painful experience for me. I usually work through ideas and name generators until I have a list of at least 5 options I think I can tolerate for more than 5 minutes. I envy all of you super creative people that have come up with really great names!

The first character I made in ESO I named Mriss. I had previously created the name Vriss for a character in EQ2, and when I was trying to decide how to make a name for my Khajiit in ESO, that name kept popping back into my head... but it needed a bit of an adjustment, so I started mentally tinkering. When the V was changed to M, I really liked how that sounded as I imagined a Khajiit would say it, and thus Mriss came into being.

I have a list of favorite names I've created over the years and use over and over in various games, but whenever they don't seem to fit, I either tinker with them (as above) or create new ones. In ESO, I have 2 I'm reusing without modification, 1 I tinkered with (Vriss to Mriss), and 1 I created for ESO. I don't really have a lot of trouble coming up with given names, but I almost always hit a mental roadblock for surnames. No clue why, but they're often my bane!

I mean, clearly I'm aware that my character's name is a quote and what it's quoting. I just don't remember how I picked that quote.

Definitely is a very Argonian thing to do, however. I'm sure that was part of my thought process.

I have thousands of names out of my own imagination in files - some as old as my first computer (1984). Most of my girls' names came from those files. They are:

Sha'ira N'gola: Redguard (my "main" assuming I actually have one) - and the younger sister of a girl I wrote an entire fanfic book about while playing Skyrim.

Kerisel Delamaitre: Breton, but the name was one from a dream in 1990 appx.

Jalitha Senarelle: Keri's cousin, name popped up just after I created Keri.

Raenirya Senthjari: Redguard, Sha's younger friend from "home".

Seraven Analthama: Dunmer, has some painful memories of running afoul of House Dres slavers.

Telanari Analthama: Sera's younger sister, very quiet, withdrawn, introspective.

Vaelka Kyne's-daughter: Obviously Nord, a bit bawdy, and very much a daughter of Kyne.

Memorae Windweaver: Nord, very blond and fair, tall, built, and shy.

Ceralienna Velithra: Altmer with a serious bent toward study, very reserved.

Morrow Wyllowdawn: Bosmer with no use for the Green Pact etc. - in your face and not quiet about it.

Daro-Rahira the Younger: Khajiit, misses Elseweyr, but had to leave home for - elsewhere - due to "issues".

Sorrow Daggerthorn: Wild child, tattooed and full of herself.

Shangri gra-Felgrika: City orc, young, unsure of herself or her role in life; planning to help Kurog rebuild Orsinium.

Ei-zesh Xer'shiss: (made this one on a challenge from someone I respect - not sure if I'm going to play her much, lizards aren't my thing really)

Lakshimani-dra Kartabi: Khajiit, Psijiic-involved, she has always been called "moon-touched" by those at home.

And yes - I have stories for all of them.... I always write stories about my girls, in every game I play.

I find "proper-from-the-lore-standpoint" names really immersive when meeting those in-game and really appreciate the effort that went into creating them. My main is Thaeryndhel, an Altmer sorcerer (male).
    The other characters are:
    • Shukhrub gro-Duzgash, an Orc warden (male)
    • Xeelai-Tzij, an Argonian templar (female)
    • Yngaranwen, a Bosmer nightblade (female)
    • Faruq at-Sayyid, a Redguard dragonknight (male)

    Bit of a winding path:

    I liked Firefly a lot.
    I played WoW.
I had a series of names ending in "elle" for various characters.
When I made my nightelf engineer, I named her Frelle (Firefly has a bad cuss they toss out, "frell").
RP determined that Frelle was a shortened version of a longer name but her family was ashamed of her so she couldn't say it. (WoW didn't let you have long names).
RP then determined that part of her really long Tolkien Elvish derived name was Tenefrellendion.
RP also created a time wedgie with dark evil alternate timeline Frelle, my Troll Death Knight named Tenefrelle.
All this was in an RP group that included a friend who got a job at ZoS, so even though I'd long left WoW to play GW2, WoW and my nickname with my WoW friends was on my mind.
I made a Redguard and wanted a name that would fit in their naming conventions.
I mangled Tenefrelle into Tan'Afriel. Nickname Tana.

    Voila!

I went with Cairgen for my first as a slightly different version of kargen. I came up with kargen as a name I use in games back in the 90s playing tradewars on BBSs. I usually played one of the good guys using the name Spaceman Spiff and decided to be a bad guy. I needed a bad guy name and decided on Kurgen from Highlander. Problem being I was drunk and even sober am not the greatest of spellers. So I got the name wrong and I have used kargen in games since. So I guess Cairgen is based on the movie Highlander and my own poor decisions. I never use "K" for kargen only lowercase. Not sure why.

My 2nd character is called Shirley I Jest because I think it is funny.
