Most of my characters are named from my own written fantasy stories. It's also how I determine their playstyle and role.

My first character's name was easy. Talagan Falathren. I have been using this same name since having it 'made' by an expert in Sindarin (a fictional language in LoTR universe). It means Harper of the Shores and I've always loved how melodic the name itself is

I know a majority of players give their characters improbably names, probably in some futile effort to convey their own rough tough demeanor. Occasionally I'll encounter a character whose name conforms to a lesser or greater extent to Elder Scrolls lore. I've generally tried to follow naming convention that should assimilate well into the community.

My first character is a magsorc named The Great Old One, a reference to H. P. Lovecraft's Great Old Ones.

On a less serious note, my buddy's first character was supposed to be a test of the character creation for ESO, so he really put no effort into building it. Four years later, that ugly Orc named "Footface" is his main :D

I could not come up with a name, so i named him Knoote. I use this nam a lot as a temp name in the game. Later i wanted a more lore friendly name, and with the name change voucher after a few years i did it. Mikhel Polcrops is based on my real life name, but Breton friendly.
I wanted to use Orit Kelteel (Orit was a random generated name from StarWars Galaxies, and Kelteel was a random elven name in Neverwinter Nights. I used this name in SWG, but it didn't fit in ESO)

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

I mostly use names that I already made from my own stories, or based on my other TES related characters. But I own like two characters who are an exception. My magblade healer; Lizardeth Báthory, and my memestamdk: The Seventh Element.

kinda hard to find unused name this days. In some games nearly impossible - some dude in PoE make a thread where he told, that he literally can't start the game due to all names he enter already used. Even names like "asdfasdfasdf". Hell, he told that he print "i can't find a name", and this name already in use )

Anyway, some name from skills and items from diablo-style games are usually available. My char name is a gun from Borderlands 2...

She was called Luranelle, and the name comes from two places:
    1. My cat's name, Luna
    2. L'ura from World of Warcraft (boss in Seat of the Triumvirate dungeon)
And I tried to mix the two, and also make it sound like a female name, that's why "elle" (also, I was listening to some French music...)

She was a Dunmer sorcerer, but I left her at around level 30 and leveled up my Khajiit warden, then deleted that my very first character (I thought I didn't like sorcerer so much) just to realize months later, I could use a strong, magicka based character for solo content. So then I created a new sorcerer, but with different name.

My first/main is named Ce'Nedra, a character from The Belgariad by David Eddings. I was around thirteen when a friend gave me the whole set, and it was the first fantasy I ever read. I finished all five books in two days, and it hooked me on the genre for life. Pretty much exactly how years later, Morrowind hooked me on everything Elder Scrolls from the first few hours of gameplay. :)

I arrived in ESO straight out of Skyrim. My very first character was a Nord DK. He was a throw away character, made just to help me understand the game mechanics. I used the first name that popped into my head - Yoffi. Very simple, very Nord.

As expected, I made mistakes. He got deleted pretty quickly.

I always try to make lore friendly names for all my characters. For Argonians I like to come up with both the Cyrodilic and Jel (Argonian language) version of their name.

I wanted to name my first ESO character (an Argonian) Speaks-Softly, but that name was already taken so I came up with a Jel name for her instead. That's how she got to be named Toxlexel, which I still like to think translates to Cyrodilic as Speaks-Softly.

One of my other Argonians, Grove-of-Trees-Swaying (Tsoxa-Dekwo in Jel) I've had since Oblivion. He's the first fleshed out TES character I made, and I tried to give him a gentle sounding name. I pretty much make this character in every TES game I play, since he's a vampire and could conceivably live through the whole timeline.

The only name I've taken from an outside source is my Maormer character Iroas Candaalil. "Iroas, God of Victory" is a card in Magic: The Gathering that I like, and I thought it sounded like a good elf name. Their last name I came up with by looking through canon Maormer names and coming up with one that fit.
    lvl50 Characters:
Toxlexel (Argonian Templar PvE Healer, EP)
Grove-of-Trees-Swaying (Argonian Vampire NB PvE Tank, EP)
Kazabi-daro (Khajiit DK PvE DPS, AD)- build under renovation
Iroas Candaalil (Maormer [Dunmer] PvE Sorc DPS, EP, vMA build)- build under renovation
    Trick-of-the-Light(Argonian Warden PvE Healer, EP)
    Characters being leveled:
Meera-Ei (Argonian DK PvP Tank, EP, Grove's sister)

First character was a Nord tank, so I looked up some Norwegian/Finnish folklore, then picked a random surname from UESP's lore names page. For (most of) the rest of them, I looked up their race's names on UESP, and picked a random combination.

My character names are almost all based on characters from other stories, such as:
    • Other RPGs I've played.
    • Stories I've read.
    • Stories I might someday write.

That's the case for 13 of my 15 main-account ESO characters as well, and a 14th is named after Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. (The 15th is an Argonian named Has-No-Feathers.) My original main's first name comes from a character I made way back on Prodigy; his last name is an adaption of one I used in Lotro. My current overland main is named and designed after a D&D character Loren Greenheart I made back on Prodigy. My pre-Nerfmire dungeon main is Percy Blakely, which is the real name of the Scarlet Pimpernel. My main dungeon healer is named Quentin D'Orien after a character I played in an online D&D Eberron game, but doesn't much resemble him otherwise except for blond hair. Francis "Lymond" Crawford was Dorothy Dunnett's greatest character; my mains in both Guild Wars games were named after him, and so is an alt I have in this game.

The resemblances other than in name or perhaps looks to the characters they're named after may or may not be close. E.g., the original Quentin d'Orien did actually resemble Dunnett's Lymond pretty closely, but none of my ESO characters do.
