Do you fear when ESO phases out?

    @Odovacar

You scared me. Really, I'm neither joking nor sarcastic. You made me thought of it - what if one day I'll read that ESO project is coming to its end. And I will never see Clockwork City, Murkmire, Valenwood and all other amazing zones again. And I will not be able to do all the quests and learn all the lore they provide. It's just horrible. But you are right, all things come to their end. So, I'll not waste my time anymore. No stupid dailies, no events, just quests and screenshots.

If it's successful it can endure. I mean, EverQuest is not only still online but still releasing expansions.

You never know with these things.

May I ask what it means? Never had experience with an online game ending. So, player will be still able to play, but in offline mode?

Yes, I love my characters, especially my main, to a ridiculous degree. I started playing ESO during a hard time IRL as a form of escapism, so there is definitely an emotional attachment to the game, besides the genuine enjoyment I get from playing. I don't even want to think about the servers coming down, and never stepping foot in Tamriel again with my Vestige, it will be a very sad day indeed :persevere: Hopefully, it won't be for some time, and in the meantime, I can take screenshots of my adventures to make memories.

In most other cases, that would be a solid maybe. When a studio stops supporting a game, they may release an official server package or something that allows players to run their own servers. If they don't, modders tend to pick it up and write their own custom server package, as what's been happening with Need For Speed: World and GTA V (Rockstar is killing GTA Online, so a lot of serious players are moving to the few other online platforms for V).

In the case of MMO's, though, it's generally a no. It may be a maybe if another company picks it up, but if an MMO dies, it generally stays dead. MMO's just have so much more baggage to handle, especially if whoever is running the servers wants them to handle the amount of players the game used to have. Even an offline mode generally wouldn't work, as the game and engine are just structured in a way that is built around the massively online component, meaning it isn't suitable to offline play.

No. But I expect it to be around a good while longer. When it goes, it goes, and I'll wave goodbye and go back to Skyrim, or forward to TES VI.

I left WoW and RIFT though they're both still going. They went in directions I didn't like, so they don't get my money or my time any more.... hundreds of dollars a year in both.... *shrug*

Its an very long time ahead. ESO contains so much lore and content it will be very relevant as an single player game for this reason longer than TES III Morrowind (changes in grapic and gameplay has slowed down a lot since then (or ratter the quality has become so good it harder to improve))
Bosmer get an prime time in ESO, they are not touched by TES games, Argonians and Khajiit to.
So you can play ESO 20 years from now, at this time game will probably be shadow of that its now.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Not really, I think eso has been dead for me for a long time. Really im just around still hoping it improves. The important part for me is the friends I have and continue to make. Most of us already interact outside eso and even play other games.

Im not on the best of terms with zos and eso these days tho. It will make me sad but I dont exactly lose anything. My little group of people still talk and the fun from eso is already gone for me.

I'd hate to see that happen, but at very least, I hope when it phrases out it is at least 5 years later, when ESO will become the second elder scroll game to ever map out the entire Tamriel

ESO has a long way to go before closure. Its what, 4 years old now? It'll be here at least 10 years from now.

What will happen is that eventually ZOS will stop releasing new content once they feel like it wont be profitable. That is still years away. Then they will put the game on life support for a bunch of years until there are very few playing. Then they'll shut servers down.

When the servers do go down, I will be sad but I also will enjoy the fact I was one of the lucky people who played the game. Sounds silly but i like to imagine my characters as people who fought the good fight and now they get to rest in peace.

I look at my characters and all their triumphs and fear the day they will become essentially obsolete. I don't want to think about it but we all know that day is coming. I embrace change, but man-o-man will that news make my heart palpitate.

Hopefully they would do a carry over into ESO 2, not everything, just certain items/achievements showing your accomplishments and participation in ESO....a purpose for the achievement point system.

No. I expect Zos will have over simplified the game to the point it is not enjoyable to play anymore. That is if their heavy handed changes do not drive me away first.

By then we can hope another decent MMORPG comes out. Currently testing a possibility.

Let's hope it's not one that is dependent on a mandatory subscription for PvP-only content.

Sub games generally offer a way higher level of quality than those funded by micro-transactions. But the game needs to return something of quality for that sub. The reason the sub did not work out for ESO is that, despite their promises of 'top tier service', ESO is a flaky game - below many F2P games in terms of quality - and the customer service is low rank.

I play ESO, really as a stop-gap to TES 6, but I certainly do not pay them a sub. But for games that return me quality and treat me as a customer and not a walking wallet with an IQ <85, I gladly pay subs as I know that's a far more sustainable income stream for a developer.

In response to the OP, ESO is already phasing out from what I can see. Well, it's definitely in a dive at the moment, whether it's a trough between some peaks remains to be seen, but games have a finite life.

ESO is definitely in freak-out mode....with the Summerset mansion...all the freebies...all sort of beyond me at this point. My gaming rig is getting up there in hours and I recently got a taste of NO GAME...due to a graphics card issue. Solved now...but I'm trying to phase the game down or out.

IMO...it is without a doubt one of the most engaging elaborate games I've played with seriously good graphics and organization...but after 3 years...life must go on.

You get out of these games what you sit down with...in a bad mood...going to have a bad time...
    I know nutting....

Very much the opposite. Thankfully it will require subscription as that is a better carrot for continue game development than a cash shop.

While it is likely 2 years out, it does plan to require a subscription. Of course with any game this early on it may or may not make it to launch. There is one or two other possibilities, but they are even earlier in development.

    Camelot Unchained? Just guessing.

I will be sad when the game comes to a close. Hopefully ESO has the longevity of DAoC. I have been playing my DAoC character now for 17 years...my character is almost old enough to vote!

Not really. I played EQ from launch +10 years or so, and spent most of the time on an iksar monk I created when kunark released. I can be a bit nostalgic at times(which is probably why I have more argonian characters) but when it's time it's time. EQ is nothing like the game I learned to love, and eso will eventually change as well. Many of us will(have already?) leave well before the plug is pulled(assuming eso isn't sold off to another company and allowed to keep dribbling on)

Kind of, ZOS still hasn't told us what they have planned beyond the 10-yr mark, currently we are halfway. I assume the major team would leave to do other projects. They still haven't given an answer if content will still be created or just put into maintenance mode.

Nah. I'm far more likely to burn out and give up before the servers are shut off. *shrug* I may put a lot of time into individual games, but I don't tie myself down to anything. The second I put down roots is the second before I tend to quit altogether.

No. I've been deeply invested in MMO's in the past, only to eventually 'wake up' and realize how much of my life I wasted grinding for those rare items or achievements - things that aren't even real, just a piece of temporary code on a server. Since then I play more casually and I keep my life more balanced. My real life, relationships, health, hobbies, etc suffered previously when I became too invested (WOW was a big one) and I'm much happier now not losing myself to a computer game. Call me a casual if you will, but my life as a whole is much richer that way.

I played many mmo's which don't exist anymore. After playing SWG for 8 years from Dec 2003 to Dec 2011 I was heartbroken my character was gone. 8 years I put into the game.

I felt the same when vanguard pulled the plug.

Other mmo's I just don't attach to much anymore. If eso were to pull the plug I would easily move on. I did put much time in my main, but I know what can happen.

I do understand how some people would feel though.
