Questions on crafted armor

So I have been improving armor to fine quality...does this just affect states or does it affect looks as well?

Are looks only affect by racial motif and type (light/medium/heavy)? Can you change colors or are all colors defaulted to whatever racial motif you use?

for me it would be logical to improve looks of armor with quality. That way you have status of better quality armor/weapon. And if it looks better you feel good about making your armor/weapon that way

Improving quality to "fine" does not seem to have an impact on appearance.

Umm I seem to recall it changes the "trim" lines around the armor. Like instead of a dull rusty trim line around the edge, once improved to "fine" it becomes a polished copper shine.

So it does not effect the geometry of the armor but its finish so to speak.

I could be wrong but I hope I'm not haha =)

Depending on the level of the armor depends on how different it looks when you refine it and make it into a "fine" quality item. Armors below lvl 8 all look...novice, no matter what you do to them. 8+ look better, and do have visible color changes as you refine them, at least the ones I worked with. And the I think lvl 14 looks the "best" unrefined; I didn't get the opportunity to refine that set in the beta, sorry.
Dunmer armor however is the only armor that doesn't seem to have a lot of visible changes from my experience.

One character in beta had lvl 8 Khajiit medium armor, and when I refined them it turned from red to black and the stitching looked a little cleaner. It was awesome.

There is definitely a visual effect. My Khajiit crafted an Argonian style leather chest in the Death's Wind set, and regretted the style choice because the pink leather clashed with her orange fur ;) When she upgraded the chest to green though, the chest turned a nice glossy dark red, which looks great.

But I agree that how dramatic the effect is depends on the item.

craft an armor, go to 3rd person view, zoom in, take screenshot, improve it, take another screenshot, compare.
Hota'h, Dual-wield/bow full medium armor NB Khajiit from day 1.

OK, I found an answer to my question. Yes, improvements do affect the look of armor items.

It's just so subtle I did not notice it. Which I guess is as it should be.

We shall not have scientific experiments here! Go away and take your little tests with you.

Turns out it isn't necessary. Someone else already did it.

I was wondering why my level 10 armor set looked drastically different than my level 6 armor set (this is with no improvements).

I've been told that only the Level 1 and 4 armors look different.

This is a direct comparison between Cloth armor hats....Homespun hat at levels 8 and 12, with and without improvements.
