After grabbing an Apple by accident in the market everyone is ready to cut my hand off.... And my head off as well.

Oh hey let me see what you have for sale..

Oh no never mind I just wanted to click on that apple sitting behind you...

What can't we talk about this? Why are you all killing me now?

Well if you just stole an apple all you needed to do is pay the fine. You must have tried to flee.

Sometimes I steal things occasionally. Having this done I go to the nearest guard and pay a fee. Sometimes I steal things on purpose, nice valuable things. The guard appears out of nowhere and wants me dead. Life is unfair.

I've turned off Auto-loot stolen items. If not, I'd be paying fines continually.

I'm referring to NPCs standing nearby when I accidentally take item off of table top. Not looting desks or chests. They don't even warn you, just turn red and start swinging. It is funny... But annoying. I remember being confused as *** years ago when this happened and I had "attack Innocents" turned off and couldn't even defend myself. Tried to run to guard and guard just fined me and didn't stop the other NPC from attacking... Finally remembered about "attack innocents" toggled it and killed the NPC but forgot I that I had ran to a guard and was promptly dispatched. Then a week later I realized guards were afraid of water...

Come by my house and try to steal something. You will see me turn red and start swinging without warning as well!

The one thing missing here is some function that allows you to surrender peacefully and pay your fine instead of having to pick between letting that upset citizen kill you, run away or defend yourself while adding murder to your bounty scale...

I mean, would it have been so hard to let angry villagers -talk- first? The guards do it too, you know... I could see a conversation before the punch9ing, either "Hey, are you gonna pay for that?" or an "That's not for sale, give it back!" with options to do -just- that for everyone who does not feel inclined towards a career as criminal scum...

Also, I really dislike the justice in Tamriel as well, for their "pay a little fine... or we kill jooo!" chouces, I want more options in justice, more justice to fear and evade, I want... great justice! https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/384538/for-great-justice/p1 ;)

I've never, EVER been in a store and picked up an item to examine it right in front of the shopkeeper and had them instantly accuse me of theft. Ever. I mean there's sort of an understanding that sometimes you pick stuff up to look at it. This function in the game makes Tamriel shopkeepers look incredibly stupid.

That one is more a limitation of the game system, since in ESO, you -cannot- just take something in your hand to look at it, then put it back where it was once you picked it up.

And if you don't give it back after picking it up... and instead put it in your backpack (aka, ESO inventory)... well, that -is- where the shopkeepers do start to worry and maybe think about calling the guards, right? ;)

If putting things back was an game-system supported option... well, then they could easily add functions towards that end, allowing you to put it back within, say, 30 seconds or before taking a step to maybe flee with no penalty.

But since it isn't... "picking up something to examine it" in ESO is the mouseover, while taking it is the "put it in your pocket" that -will- get people assume you mean to steal it...

...and a dialouge option instead of the shopkeeper or whoever is nearby just starting punching you -would- be a better way to resolve this, don't cha think? ;)
