Apparently it's a FFXIV thing? I don't know that I'd consider it American so much as something promoted by that game, which isn't Western in origin iirc. Until the ZoS Witches Festival blog I'd never heard it used for anything but FFXIV events. I don't play that game but my friends gush about it now and then.
Personally I detest the word. Maybe I'll come around in a decade or so, that's how long it took me to stop hating on "sci fi" and "d'oh!" respectively.
Friendly reminder that nobody needs to 'cough up' any amount of crowns to get the Exorcised Coven Cottage. You can purchase it for 250,000 gold (during the festival only!) after completing the "An Unsparing Harvest" achievement, which can be found under the Holiday Event / Witches Festival achievements tab.

Some Halloween store misspelled the word spooky and it caught on with the internet...
Because grown adults talking like 4 year olds is clever and funny now.

Exactly, this is the level of humor we're talking here. I do have a 4 year old and he loves to say "poop." I laugh too 'cause of how he says it and that he gets such delight from it.
However if a grown person were to do it, I would think that they are mentally handicapped.
If you are considering to type this word for humor, instead go to some IRL adult friends in a public place and say it, and try to make it sound funny.
