About a year ago I did the maelstrom arena (normal), and dang, I died a lot. It didn't matter which class I brought in, I got wrecked and my characters corpses were used to wipe the floor of the arena. I actually was able to complete the normal arena with all my characters but not without dying at least 30 times per arena run. I also tried VMA and of course I didn't make it.
In an attempt to gain the arena dremora plunder skull, I headed towards the maelstrom arena, again on normal. Rushed straight in, without taking the quest. I thought I would only have to slay the first boss to get the dremora skull. After the first chest didn't contain one, I was quite disappointed and realized I had to do this whole arena again to get a dremora skull. So, since I already bothered to complete the first round, I went on and finished the entire arena. And ooohhh boy, it was so extremely easy. I one-shot almost all of the arenas combatants with poison injection and the bosses health pools melted as if they were some nooby quest mobs. I completed the entire arena within 30 minutes and I didn't die once. I never even came close to dying. I remember, a year ago, I failed so incredibly often at the ice and the poison stages, I actually were shouting out of frustration, every single time I died. But this time it were the mobs who got wiped the floor with. This was the very first time I actually enjoyed this stupid arena. Apparently, I became a better ESO player over the past year, without even realizing it. Though, I still cannot exceed 23k dps. With this recent success, however, I'm actually attempted to go for another vet run. I have a feeling I might be able to do it now. Without this year's witches event, I probably still wouldn't know what I am capable of. I strongly advise anyone else, who had serious problems with the maelstrom arena and then just gave up on it, to give it another try. You might see the same results and rediscover content, you originally thought, you would never ever approach again.

Little tip for the witches festival skeleton slayer achievement. It does look like another grind fest but a quarter skyreach catacombs run will finish this achievement. When you enter the catacombs just take the left path and slay your way to that chest room. After laying waste to everything spawning out of it, you will have the achievement already. Happy dremora skull farming and skeleton massacre everyone!

Wow, that's inspiring! Could you please share your build? I undestand that a build is just a one step of many to do the Arena, buts still... one-shoting with a poison injection makes me greatly interested in it

Do you think it would be possible to do normal maelstrom on a tank? I have just completed Fungal Grotto 1 on normal solo with my tank so it seems I am tougher than I thought.

Yes, you can on normal. It'll be slow, but there aren't many DPS race mechanics. However, Maelstrom is about doing it all - damage, heals, and a bit of tanking - on one character. So I'd run your tank like you were soloing a dungeon. Bring the self heals and the damage, and prepare for a mix of melee and ranged enemies.

And you don't have to do the entire arena in one go. You can leave and come back.
I started it today on my NB who has never been in there and finished 3 arenas with 1 death.
I'll go back tomorrow and do 3 more.

Similar experience. I never stepped foot in Maelstrom before but I thought I would try it on normal for the skull. My dps sucks I’m lucky to get 20k on a good day. It took me an hour and I only died twice both times in the ice phase. I was actually shocked that, like you said, I was literally killing the adds with a one shot light attack. It’s so insanely easy for anyone with a half decent build so yeah definitely doable for the purposes of this event.

With regards to maelstrom arena, I have a question that pertains to the current holiday event. I am currently progressing my main and all of my alts through VMA one stage at a time. Currently on stage six with all of them. Clearly, I’m not going to finish stage nine on any of them in the next 10 days. Does anybody know if you can start the arena on normal even if you have a current quest saved on veteran?

I do not use any special build or sets. The one-shoting also only works for the trash mobs, not for mini bosses and there-like.
Anyway, I main a bow/bow warden and I'm already sitting at roughly 850 Cp. Sets are just 5 hunding's rage, 5 spriggans thorns and 2 sellistrix monster set. Warrior mundus stone, nirnhoned weapons, poison and weapon dmg weapon enchantments. Champion points: +20% direct dmg, +13% physical and poison dmg, +4k armor penetration, + 12% dot dmg and I think 19% crit dmg. This is from memory, I can't look it up right now.

Most likely, but the boss of the ice stage is a dps race. You need to kill her before she can destroy the 3 platforms but then again, it's normal difficulty. If you use a few dmg skills and put your cp into more dmg it should work.

Here, we have a player who specifically attributes their ability to beat MA due to the in-game experience they gained over the past year ... and yet ... there are still players asking 'can you share your build' ... LOL! Simply amazing.

@Vizikul - congrats. And yes, experience sneaks up on you ... you don't realize how much better you've become until you successfully complete content you unsuccessfully attempted a year ago.

@Vizikul: kudos and thanks for the post! I've only been playing since late June, and damn - everything seems so hard (lot of it due to my inexperience in the game, and some of it due to 2000 ms lag.... yeah, all the time....) but it's really great to read something that gives me hope that with more experience in game, even if I never have less ping, I might actually get to do some stuff like that eventually.

Right now, I'm struggling with getting a warden through the MQ - just did Halls of Torment today (before nerfmire on Monday), might see if I can get her through the Sancre Tor ones before then. Since pet classes work best with lag like mine, and since ZOS has seen fit to nerf BOTH of them.... well.... I'm not real hopeful. I only play PVE, pretty much solo since I can't ever justify asking people to put up with ping like mine.... it's really painful what ZOS has done to pet classes PVE just because of - well, that's a gripe for another thread of course, shouldn't continue in that vein.

Anyway, I really enjoyed your post and thanks again!

Yes, you can. Its a separate quest. Just swap the shield settings in groupfinder. I did that on my Stam Sorc. Finished the normal quest today, and I'm still on Arena 5 of the Vet Quest.

Completed VMA many times but never done normal before today just for the skull and couldn't believe how easy it was - just one shotting most mobs with force pulse. had one death due to lag and whole arena took about 45 mins.

I was using a well below par PvP build too because I couldn't be bothered changing my gear and cp. Could have done it quicker with the right set up

I tried nMA with my Khajiit NIghtblade probably around cp 300 something. A whole lot of deaths and I gave up on the ice level. Today, I go in with my Dark Elf magicka Warden (cp 740s) and make it all the way through the ice level without any deaths (tho I cheesed the dwemer level, constantly cast mushrooms while heavy attacking everything with resto staff). Made it through the rest of the levels with maybe 3 or 4 deaths total (some on the same level).

That ice level was a real close one tho. I killed her right as she broke the last ice platform. I saw the ice break and then reform under my feet.

Was a definite surprise that I made it all the way through.
