decorating - what am I missing here?

Struggling with this decorating system. Is it really this hard or am I doing it wrong? I can't get a perspective that lets me place things taller than I am. I can't view above it to place things. Also trying to maneuver items in the x,y,z coordinates is a major pain (eg: putting crystals in those daedric light stand things.) I tried changing view perspective but it's no help. Is the decorating system really this clunky or am I missing something? I tried those housing add-ons and they're no help.

A lot of it is that the system takes getting used to, but somethings are clunkier than others(like the situation you just stated). It definitely would be nice to be able to change your perspective when placing things. As for the X,Y,Z things you find in addons, once you realize what the X and Z axis are they make things a lot easier.

What are you trying to do, maybe some of us can help.

    It's not you, it's clunky.

I hate that placing items is tied to your character's position. Nothing is worse than painstakingly trying to place something and oops - your character can't walk forward anymore - or is turned juuuuuuust slightly off center so now the item is skewed wonky.

I find it helpful to go into first person view and put my character on walk instead of the default run when tweaking things. It does take some getting used to, that's for sure.

It's rather clunky. Just yesterday I was doing the same -- putting crystals in those daedric light stand things -- I had to place it, view it from another angle, correct it, rinse and repeat. I got it placed though. :D

Your character's breathing and personality can affect placement at the very second the item is placed. So.. in addition to the comments above, remove the character's personality if using one. One cannot do anything about breathing though.

OMG...been doing this a LOT today.

It's occurring to me now after the fact, maybe I would have better luck with my tinier characters actually doing the decorating.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

I'll try magic carpet out, thanks for the tip! What I was trying to do was I have a pillar that extends about 8 feet above me. I was trying to place one of those table top daedric flame pots in the center of it for a light source. I was trying to center it, while being below the top of the pillar.

It IS clunky. As someone suggested, try out Magic Carpet along with Essential Housing Tools from the same awesome author, where he included the majority of his addons, these are truly essential tools for decorating.

Also, try to take a break if you feel very tired, I remember first times I was decorating I was getting some serious headaches because of the clunkiness plus my inexperience, I couldn't resist more than half hour, progressively I got better at placing items and got accustomed to all that fuss zooming and moving around that is very tiresome for the eyes, now I can do it for hours :D

Have fun and gl with your decoration.

No awesome add-ons for consoles, sadly. But, in your case, you do have options with add-ons to make things easier.

But, with your particular situation, the upcoming addition to the housing editor that allows grouping will be useful, esp. for console players. Just turn off surface drag and sink the pillar down to where you can see above the top, place your brazier, group the items, then move to where you want it.

    THIS!
& some objects you can figure out the other angle by deliberately making it interfere/clip with another item as you are placing it...
if you get into the rhythm of setting yourself up to correct the "other angle" it gets easier.

& as others have said scaffolding & ramps are your friend for more complicated projects
