The question is not whether or not we need more.

The question is whether or not the consoles (or your PC, but ZOS blamed consoles the last time this came up before Summerset) can handle more.

ZOS is very, very serious about performance issues... when it concerns housing.

And this folks is why you dont put MMOs on console. They severely limit what the game could do on PC. Personally I say give us unlimited slots and let us break our s*** if we want to.

either of the 2 indoor cells in wolfhunter keep dungeon contain vastly more items than 700, plus gajillions of mobs and 4 human players without performance issues. the problem is zos are lazy

Yup, let the players determine when it's too much for our system to handle. If 701 items is too much for consoles, so be it. Maybe the limit on PC is closer to 1000 or 1500 or maybe it depends on the placement or size. Maybe house A can fit 1200 but house B can only handle 1100. Let the players muck around with it and if we lag out too much in our house, we can remove a few items at that point. If we go too far and "break" our house with instant crashes, add a "reset" button for those emergency situations.

Have you ever been in your house with the full 24 guests? Just curious

There was a detailed t post in a pre-Summerset thread from a player with experience in coding game environments.

I'm not going to get into all the math, but in essence the problem lies in the number of calculations that must be performed for all interactable objects in a space. Camera angles and game physics add to the number of calculations.

The more stuff in a room, the more calculations your processor must perform to redraw the objects every time you touch your input device.

The number of calculations grows at an exponential (I think, it might be logarithmic) rate as more objects are added. Although Zeni stated the limit was set by console, it is only slightly lower than desktop.

At a certain point based on the number of objects, the processor is, in essence, unable to keep up. Frame rate drops until the game crashes. Add in the unusual things players might do, like piling hundreds of interactable objects on top of each other, and the performance threshold between working and crashing is reached rapidly.

Put another way, 700 objects works on all platforms. 1000 objects might work if players don't do anything unusual. 1500 objects would require more processing power than you can afford. 2000 objects exceeds the limits of current technology.

Those aren't actual numbers, but they're more or less in line with the rate at which processors would fail to meet the computing demands required to display all the objects a player might add if caps were raised.

Regarding objects in delves/towns/outdoors... those aren't individual objects.
