Help Please, Old Player Returning

I've been doing some reading and honestly feel a bit disappointed in my character. I went for the Templar as I love the whole knight in shining armor bit. So I made my character and have a hybrid stamina/magicka build and have been trying to balance out my points as I have leveled between the two. It seems unfortunately that builds either go Stamina or Magicka, not a balance between both. Also I am using a two handed sword. I would really love suggestions from vets who have been playing. I thought about ditching the two hander and going weapon and shield. I want to keep the whole "knight/paladin" motif that I have going on. Could I get some suggestions please? I only just got back after not having played the game for four years.

Go full into magic build , but run sword n board back bar and dual weild swords front bar ...

Make sure to take the passives in both skill lines that will be of benefit and enjoy

When trying to play that character I go magicka Templar. If you're thinking dnd style paladin I get why you want breath of life to work a bit on a stamplar (sticking with typical knight-like weapons but having some magicka healing) but tbh a magicka Templar will ultimately feel closer to that playstyle (soaking up damage, providing some healing, but ultimately you're the vanguard Damage Dealer).

However the role of stam and magicka are reversed (instead of using weapons to damage and magic to sustain, you mostly use magic to damage and weapon attacks to sustain your defenses -- blocking, dodging, moving).

I suggest Argonian for a shamanistic style, Breton/imperial for a knight paladin style, and high or dark elf for aggressive damage-dealer style.

    Thank you for the replies.

I was playing around in game and tried a magicka build with one hander and shield and found myself absolutely loving it so far. My only concern is the fact that I chose a Nord because of their racials. Do you think perhaps I should consider switching to Breton? I don't want to play an elf as a melee Templar.

Hybrid builds don't do very well in the current meta. Try sticking with stamina or magicka, not both.

And nord will make a tanky stamplar even in medium armor , Its not the best race or anything but it can work.

I was reading some threads and they were saying that playing a Nord wasn't a good idea for PvP as a magplar. Is that really true? I know that opinions vary but I've not exactly been having an easy go of it keeping up magicka as a Nord. I feel sometimes like I have to stop and wait for magicka to regen up after a fight.

Here is a question, can I compensate through champion points and mundus stones to get my magicka regen to a point where it won't matter about my race? I really don't want to reroll my character if I can avoid it.

yes, that is true. Nord is a stamina race and probably a terrible choice for a magicka class. It would be better for you to make another templar that is not a stamina race, like an altmer, breton, or argonian etc.

Sadly for PvP racials are CRITICAL for your desired playstyle, so I won't lie to you, in ESO PvP there is no such thing as compensating. You should look at your build as a whole, every little bit counts. and racials are no little bit. Again racial passives are , CRITICAL, for your intended playstyle.

I don't want to be the downer but its better for you to reroll now than later.

You don't HAVE to reroll. It's just being implied that if you going to, do it now before all the invested time.

I would keep the Nord, use as a tank or stam DD or whatever. Maybe just start fresh with a Mag race. With the daily XP scrolls it's not hard to level up real quick.

Breton is a great choice for PVP cause spell resist and +1% Alliance Point gain!

I don't want to strongly disagree with the others. I myself have made the point that racials are extremely important, in PvP, and I play a Breton magplar and Redguard stamplar. With that said, I also play a Nord DK, and Nord is underrated. The race is used deliberately by some YouTubers.

Where to start? First of all, while hybrids generally don't perform as well as pure magicka or stamina builds, they are more viable this patch than they have ever been. Watch Kristofer ESO's (Jack Daniell's) YouTube channel, for example:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHa3WiocQB0

He plays a lot of hybrid builds. It is true that he is a great player and will make anything work. Having tried hybrids, in my experiments they have never been the best, but they can come pretty close to pure builds, in PvP. To make a true hybrid, you have to build in a very particular way, such as:

    5x Pelinal's Aptitude (mandatory)
    5x Shacklebreaker
    1x Kena / 1x Velidreth OR 2x Slimecraw
    Warrior mundus stone
    Nirnhoned gold weapons
    5x medium armor
Double regen drinks (Honest Lassie Honey Tea) or triple regen drinks (good for Nord) / Orzorga's Smoked Bear Haunch

Most important: All Infused jewelry and all weapon damage enchants. This type of build will give you around 20K magicka and stamina, with high weapon AND spell damage. If you peruse Kristofer ESO's YouTube channel you will find a video about hybrids in general, which is basically this setup.

Nord has a couple of things going for it that, in my opinion, make it not bad for magplar. The problem with magplars in general is that their main heal is Honor the Dead, a burst heal, and that's basically not that good, at least for solo play. Heals over time are, in my opinion, more valuable in PvP, as they allow you to heal while being offensive. As a magplar, you can get backed into a corner, spaming Honor the Dead without doing damage. It is hard to switch from defense back to offense. There are a couple of solutions to that.

One is to be tanky. You have to be able to take damage for a few seconds. You will lose some health, and only then you heal. The Nord damage mitigation passive helps with that, as does using 1-hand and shield and heavy armor. Even 1-hand and shield + light armor is viable though.

Another method is to use health regen. Nord gets a 20% (or is it 15% now) health regen passive. This is normally not a great stat to invest in, except for using the Troll King set. Basically you can use Troll King + tri drinks or gold foods + CP to give a magplar some healing over time. Nord passives help with that. The plain Nord health passive will also help, as you want something like 25K health in CP PvP as a magplar.

The only Nord passive that is arguably a bit wasted on a magplar is the stamina bonus. However stamina is needed by any magicka class for break freee, roll dodge and block, so it is by no means a complete waste.
