Node farming bots, an easy solution.

Here is yet another post like many others before asking ZoS for a solution to node farming bots that camp resource nodes (mostly in starter areas) and just keep taking them non stop 24 hrs a day. Why are there no moderators that actually moderate the game? I can’t speak for PC but on console I have never seen a game master or moderator anywhere. So here’s my solution, bring moderator’s to console that can do things like find these bots and ban accounts on the spot. And not just start at banning accounts, but banning IP addresses to make it harder for these bots to keep popping up. This has been going on for way to long and it has actually gotten worse then it used to be because nothing is being done. How many reports and complaints do you have to get before something is done?

On a side note for players who want to mess with these bots, you can use the questionable meat sack to pull the bots away from the nodes so they can’t get them ;)

Because this would require overhead staffing which isn’t something always available.

The return of investment probably is not there. So they spend 35k-45k annually on a role like this. Does it bring in or prevent that much loss of revenue to justify being there? Not really.. no.

Ban IP addresses? So in the off chance another customer that uses my ISP gets banned, then I get his IP, I can't play... Sounds legit. The vast majority of residential internet connections are configured via DHCP. Businesses are given static IPs, and they cost money.

And where is the due process? Do I get banned because I went afk standing near a resource node in a starter zone?

That's pretty different from being a bot. Bots will take the node non-stop, in an automatic way. If you suspect someone is a bot, just plant the bear trap memento on top of the node location and it'll be automatically disarmed by the bot. I've reported 2 ppl after this test already.

The way DHCP leases are configured, you keep your dynamic IP for years anyway. It takes a major overhaul of the headend to get a different IP. So, even though its leased, its for all intents and purposes a permanent IP.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

The only time ZOS brings in a game master is when there is massive complaints of botting. Then they are only there for about a day, do a bit of bot banning, and then don’t show up again until the next forum rage. Otherwise, they don’t have the resources or desire to do anything about it.

Whether or not the bots are removed, I'm also concerned about what is done with their ill-gotten gains. It is fairly simple to deduce that some ringleader behind these bots is the going to bank all the materials harvested and exploit other players with their sale. Does these ill-gotten goods, whether mats or gold, also get removed from the system?

DHCP server make a best attempt to give you the same IP you had before as associated with your router's MAC address. Power off your modem or router for a day or a week, and you will not get the same IP. Replace router, you will get different IP. My ISP has a one hour lease time on addresses. *** Communications. I disconnect from the WAN for 1 hour, I have a very high chance of getting a new IP since my old one was likely given to another customer.

Practically, the IPs stay the same most of the time. There is zero guarantee of that. Not appropriate to associate bans with IP addresses for something like this.

It's also very easy to get a new IP as I described above or just spoof MAC address on WAN port of your router if it allows for that.

Edit: Oh for gods sakes. The censored ISP name is a three letter word that starts with C and ends with X and sounds like "docks".

No. The person or persons running the bots launders the materials through other temporary accounts to be sold for real money.

All that happens is temporary accounts get banned. The person behind them loses nothing as console allows them to make an infinite number of accounts and share the base game and online access among them all.

It's not just that. They sell directly to other players, for in-game gold. I've seen it, documented it, reported it. Just the other day there was an obvious botter in Rawl'ka. Toon was sitting by the wayshrine in starter gear, on an account with only 5 gamerscore (an obvious indicator of a botting account). They repetitively spammed they were selling mats.

Reasons why I never buy mats unless it's from someone I know.

Your ISP is weird if the lease is only for an hour. I work for the largest ISP in the states and our lease time is a week. The ISP that I worked at before that did the same. Heck, the two companies that bought us used the same lease time. The extra network overhead that incurs with shorter leases is of no benifit. The other point is, who turns off their modem unless you wear a tin foil hat? Who wants to wait for 3 to 4 minutes for the thing to boot? I kept the same dynamic IP for more than 6 years.

Lets talk about DHCP. At 50% of the lease time, it requests a refresh of the lease. This lease will continue to request the refresh up until the original lease time is up. So, with any major non weird ISP, in the states at least, you would have to have your modem unplugged from power for one full week, plus some token amount of time, to lose an IP.

We IP Banned quite often on the forums I moderated on and it rarely if ever caused an issue with some other user coming along later. The few times it did it was easy to resolve. Oh, and these IP Bans were not one address here or there, but subnets in size. Again, it was not an issue in practice.

Also, IPs are not given out by mac on an ISP level, they are given through provisioning and billing systems, so spoofing a MAC address would more than likely result in not getting on line as it would not match the MAC that is on file.
