every mmo i have played allowed us to cast a buff of extra damage or invisibility or defenses, shields, ect ect
for 2 hours at a time.
this 3 second and 1 second lasting is just needs to be changed.

if a sorc casts shields those shields should last 2 hours at a time.
same thing with invisibility.

2 hour lasting buffs should be what we have, per cast.

That does seem like a good idea. I would say if when cast, you don't get to regenerate that magika that was used to cast the spell. Also it should cost so much more if the buff will be 2 hours.

Never herd of a game that has 2 hour buffs so curious to know what games are these.

    Appeal to tradition fallacy.

Do you have an actual argument for why ESO's combat should be changed to be like every other mmo?

I personally prefer ESO's fast paced combat with shorter buffs.

Can you cite some MMO's where most buffs lasted two hours?

From the ones I've played you had food or one class buff which could last a while but there were still many temporary buffs used during fights.

Why two hours? Why not one hour? Or seventeen and eleven sixteetenths hours? I don't see how making buffs semi-permanent would do anything to enhance game play. Why not just call for permanent buffs? I'm just a humble console player, so I'm continually amazed at the PC player community's voracious appetite for add-ons and gameplay changes that reduce the player's need to react, to pay attention, or even to think.

As we say on console... PC = Plenty of Crutches. ;)

5 minutes for buffs like major brutality would be cool. Also adding more potions for fire resists etc. Adding scroll spells as well. DDO handled buffs the best. ESO is super sloppy and amplifies it's own clunkiness.

2 hours seems a bit long. But I do agree with you they should last a lot longer. In fact: when shields were originally designed on ESO they did last significantly longer.

Generally speaking (and although the game's other systems have significantly improved) most of changes to the ESO combat system have been to its detriment. The original combat development team was more accustomed to the different styles of MMO combat and produced better results for everyone, where as the current one favors a single play style and skews development in that direction at the expense of everyone else. I can promise you the lead combat developer on this game plays an offensive character and shuns defensive play styles.

I first noticed shades of it back when I did Veteran Maelstrom Arena. As I feared would happen, this kind of one-sided (and I would argue shoddy) game play has continuously leaked into the game's other content, replacing the older more stable combat formulas that relied on traditional RPG methods and roles with gimmicks and action-based strategies that this game frankly just isn't equipped to handle.

I still to this day prefer the game's original set of instances. They can at times be too easy. But that is mostly just due to the explosion of damage gained from CP which the original game was not intended to accommodate. The actual "mechanics" or strategies themselves are inventive and reward role specialization instead of tediously relying on a combination of twitch game play and piling on as much damage as possible while frantically spamming abilities - which seems to be all this current combat team is capable of producing.

That's about as good a description of ESO's current combat systems as I've seen.

Things like that work really well for games like WoW where you have 75 THOUSAND abilities you can cast. Cast long buffs, start playing the game.

In ESO there are 12. 12 Abilities to work with. If buffs lasted 2 hours, people would literally have to slot skills, cast them, then redo bars again and start playing. Every 2 hours. Or do it with addon presets (rip console). Either way, not fun.

Why is it so fun to spam a shield ability over and over? I don't get it.

Shields are meant to be a defensive buff. This whole idea of spamming a buff frankly doesn't make sense to me (it never has) and is what got them into trouble to begin with.

What makes shields fun to use is they can keep you alive in situations you would have otherwise died in. It isn't spamming them, is it?
