I've only played stam characters, but could you get around the cast time by recasting the shield before the original shield runs out? I understand the original shield will take a second, but this sounds similar to the stam rotation where you cast Flames of Oblivion to keep it going right before it runs out.
Again, I've never played the magsorc character.

Yeah, I’m basically shelving my mag sorc until these changes are reverted. Although, given that pet sorcs are getting bugged and targeting is such a pain in the rear... maybe I’ll just roll in pet sorc BG groups and zergs. *rolleyes*

Shields don't "run out." They get eaten up by huge amounts of damage, usually within a second or two of casting them (if you're doing it right).
But assuming they last the entire time (haha), that's still only 9 seconds. You'd have to recast it every 8 seconds to make sure it's always up. So in a trial, a one-second hard cast, every 8 seconds, is gonna eat up 12.5% of my damage right off the top. (Of course it's actually way more, since that 9 second cooldown isn't EVER going to line up with the actual damage incoming. And again, that shield is NEVER going to last for 9 seconds anyway.)
In solo content like VMA, it's a moot point. If you need a shield, and you have to spend one second casting the shield, you're dead. Simple as that.

Got it. Now I see why people are so upset. Seems shortsighted to remove a basic tool of a particular class.
Thanks for helping me understand

*every 8 seconds, as shield duration has been increased to 9 seconds. But yeah, definitely not a fan. I guess I need to run vMA as many times as I can before this nerf hits...

I think you're more optimistic about how long a shield lasts than I am. Mine rarely last even that long, at least in vet content and PvP.

It's not just for a particular class, I'm truly amazed that people can't grasp the simple concept that there are things besides sorcs that use shields for survival, but all LA mag users that are going to get cornholed by these changes.
Magdens will get it the worst. Shields will be trash along with Deceptive Predator losing it's small chance to save you from some damage (thus letting your shield last a bit longer) along with not having a disengage tool (at least a sorc might be able to streak away, wtf am I supposed to do?) and no CC outside of an ult.

Don't be so hasty. They also did this:
"Your Spell and Physical Resistance now reduces incoming damage before it is applied to your damage shield."
"This change makes damage shields function more consistently with the rest of the game’s mechanics. It means that damage shields are more powerful in PvE content since monsters generally don’t reduce armor. Heavy Armor players in particular will receive much more effective damage shields now. This is intended to make damage shields a more potent tools for tanks."

Yup, length of time is pointless in vet Trials. It was always a reactionary thing with shields - you know a certain mech is coming, you drop the shield, shield eats most of the damage, healer catches the rest.
Except now theres a 1s cast time on that, which makes it harder to react to immediate threats, and harder to stack shields on certain boss mechanics.

This thread is about PVE. Sorcs don't use Streak in PVE.
I've never played a Warden, but you have, like, a LOT of heals, right?
Sorc has exactly one active heal, it's a pet, it needs to be double-barred, and it likes to get itself killed while you're not watching.
I'm not saying that all mag users aren't getting screwed here. We are. But Wardens getting hit harder than Sorcs? Not so much...

*Admits to never playing warden
*Proceeds to make ridiculous and grossly wrong assumptions about them
Thanks for the laughs
Even with me not talking from a PvE standpoint the point about shields being absolute garbage with these changes still stands, or do you want to make another ludicrous post claiming otherwise?
MagDens have it a lot better: Deceptive Predator now reduces AoE damage by 10%, which is more useful than a 5% passive dodge chance for a Magicka spec, while our new Arctic Blast CC also heals us at the same time.
Combined with the Warden's tankiness and self heals... it makes them a lot better for open world and battlegrounds
