It will take the average of all pieces together.

So, if you have 5 purple and 2 gold. Your stat bonus will be a bit higher than 7 purple, because the two gold pieces will increase the average of stat bonuses across all pieces.

    Yeah, @ESO_GOD is right.

So, here's the thing, upgrading an individual piece to gold is going to provide marginal improvements. In the case of a recovery or damage bonus, the bonus will go from 124 to 129. Each upgraded piece will improve that stat by 1. Max stats improve by about 8 points per piece upgraded.

So, these improvements are almost not worth noticing.

The one thing you will want to upgrade to gold are your weapons (on non-tanks), as the base damage increase on the weapon itself is significant. Everything else can be safely left at purple, unless you're sitting on mats and just want the shinies.

I would say improvimg tanks weapons are just as important, not only does the weapon and spell damage go up, the traits do too, like infused percentage.

And many self heals are based on weapon or spell damage..

It’s always about the shinies. If by late game, you are not swimming in gold mats, you are not playing it correctly.

It doesn't really matter that much for the tank.

EDIT: That said, if you want to gold out your gear, feel free. But, for the tank, it won't be the difference between clearing content and taking a dirt nap.

I mean this, if you want to upgrade to gold, feel free. But, don't feel like you need to. The only exception are your weapons. You do want to upgrade those on your DPS and healers.

I disagree on tank weapons. They should be gold just like healers and DDs. The extra ~200 weapon and spell damage is significant for things like Vigor, Cinder storm, Cauterize, etc. Roughly 5-10% increase in these self heals for most tank builds, or on par with 100% uptime of Minor Mending just for spending a few Tempering Alloy. It can be the difference between relying on a healer or being a completely self-sustaining tank.
