The real source of lag?

I’m a little surprised that I’ve never seen this mentioned on the forums, but after reading countless posts (mostly pertaining to Cyrodiil ofc) about server performance, I felt like I had to mention it. Could it possibly be that the increasing array of crafting styles and available outfits, makeup, hair styles, tattoos, etc. would have the greatest impact on server performance? I mean, these are all on-demand graphics renderings that need to take place on top of all of the math involved in calculating skills, damage, heals, movement, etc.

To me it seems that this visual adornment aspect of the game is having a root impact on its performance - quite the double-edged sword imo.

Of course, ZoS needs to sell us these cosmetics to keep the game alive, but I think most of us would opt for less ornate character decoration in favor of actually playable Cyro performance for example.

Thoughts?

The stuff you describe is more relevant to fps and potatoe rigs, rubbish graphics cards, but even on high end rigs, lag is and has pretty much always been a feature since day one 2014.

I wonder if the next generation network(5G) will solve some lag issues. I read that 5G will be like 200 times faster with fewer packet losses and low latency.

I think one day we will all be lag free.

Will not happen. Companies at least in North America will find ways to throttle our internet service. Make us pay more for no reason.

You do know that the graphics are rendered client side, right? The only overhead would be the server sending details on what each character is wearing, pretty minor really. However, yes your basic premise may be correct that you may have lower fps playing now compared to 2014 if your rig is maybe a little dated. They have made optimizations in that time too though, so hard to know.

You play on a cell phone hotspot?! Brain-frying 5G isn't going to change the quality of, for example, my cable internet at home. If anything, it will further clog the ol' tubes with more pointless cell phone traffic of people watching Netflix as they walk down the street.

    No, why would I?

I'm sure one day we will be able to to use something like a usb wireless network adapter on our laptop and play games like ESO from anywhere we choose without ( or very little ) lag. Never underestimate future technology.

This is a portion of the article I read on the Wall Street Journal.
Each of the modern leaps in wireless network technology has brought distinct change: The second generation—aka 2G—allowed for voice transmission, 3G ushered in the app revolution, and 4G brought a drastic speed boost.

Now, the highly anticipated 5G wireless networks are expected to be powerful enough to bring us mass-market automated cars and real-time virtual reality, yet practical enough to replace wired home broadband.

The solution to slow speed, high latency and packet losses on a wireless network is to use cable instead. Don't even use wireless keyboards and mice.

It was (still is?) popular to blame the lighting patch. But that patch was only slightly before the dye station patch (which is when I noticed significantly more lag in PVP.) Was the dye station info added to the clients, but not activated, at the lighting patch?

It was patch v1.2.3 (commonly referred to as the "lighting patch", though the change had nothing to do with the lighting changes) where the netcode was changed to greatly reduce client-trust (in order to combat the rampant botting/flying through walls, etc that was going on at the time), but the reduction of client-trust has the inherent consequence where the data on your client has to constantly check in with the server in order to make sure it is correct, which is the mechanism which causes the lag.
Really we do it without like, the musical instruments. This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.

Faster wifi isn't going to fix the lag in this game. I was recently fortunate enough to be able to upgrade my ISP from 3 mb/s DSL to 100 mb/s cable and guess what? Nothing changed, the game still lags exactly like it has been for years.

We already have to pay more. They have "usage guidelines" and if you use over a certain amount, they send you nasty letters and tell you you have to pay more. This was on a so-called unlimited cable plan.

They will do everything they can to sell more, serve less. That's how they are.

Perhaps this contributes to it as well:

    mu7sdv.jpg

Old pic, but saw it happen today. Seriously, this problem has gotten worse since Summerset. After playing a while in Cyrodil, poof! 2-3 ESO processes appear. I have no idea what causes it, but closing one of the spawns stops the lag, but sometimes results in pixellation or other bugs like falling through the ground, etc.

And no, this process was not an old one that was left open. It literally gets spawned sometime after the client is open for a while. Doesn't always happen (or I just don't see it), but when it does its always a lag fest and the performance is terrible. Whatever is happening in the client that causes this could be behind the FPS bugs and maybe why the performance didn't really improve, at least on the client's end.
