Flying Mounts

I asked it once in-game and people replied that the engine from the game would never allow such a thing because of (the way the 3D works here). On my point of view, I believe that it would be problematic due to many of the lands not being available yet, but it makes me wonder. Will it never be a thing? Even World of Warcraft have it since over a decade ago. How come ESO couldn't have it too? Someday in the future...

Because it ruins gameplay. Every game that gets flying mounts the world suddenly feels smaller. You can go everywhere quick. ESO already has a very easy fast travel system with shrines every 200m. The zones already feel small thanks to this.
Flying mounts also make it that all the world zones have to be changed. There are tons and i mean TONS of invisible walls.
Also, like mount doomcrag, is just decoration in the world. Because the game is heavily zoned. The actuall mount doomcrag where the battles take place are a very different zone then rivenspire.
Same counts for some cities, like Northpoint, which is enclosed by doors and an instance and not freeroam like other cities.

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

Heh it will look strange if we ever fight Alduin in some time travel quest and get some dragon mount. It would be cool to have a Dragonborn as a new class and go screaming around. Gonna check that New Class thread now.

Never going to happen. ;). I asked about it at the playtest - they said those exact words. Also the engine doesn’t really allow for swimming or flight - I mean it *could* be possible but do you want them working 2 years on new content or flight...

Your friends were mostly correct. There isn’t a third axis to work with on mounts.

Besides, as others have pointed out there is not a need. However, Zos could do hovering mounts since they follow the same route and can abide by the same rules as what we currently have.

Yes! That's just what this game needs! Being able to fly over Keep walls in Cyrodiil!! BRILLIANT!! Let's make that happen! Like..yesterday! (now if they implemented mounted-flying combat? That could be something) /sarcasm off...

You wouldn't be able to use these in Cyrodiil. Hence, few PvP players would buy them. Because you know, ZoS=money/crown store/bottom line. Hence, they will never be made. They can't even do capes, how much effort do you think flying mounts would be? ROFL. You PvE'ers just slay me sometimes...

One of the reasons I went to try Guild Wars 2. The mount system LOOKS AWESOME. They also have underwater swimming. Not sure if combat can be done in underwater. No flying combat though. One thing stopping me going all in and leaving ESO is you have to be level 80 to start the mounts. I want to ride mounts NOW.

As for flying combat, I think it would be fun. Frustrating to learn for sure. I tried Riders of Icarus, basically a "catch them all" game if you love pets, but you can fly and have aerial combat. Sadly no controller support and no Y inverse I had to give up that game at level 4. Just can't play without no Y inverse support.

I don't care if it's LORE FRIENDLY or not. I just want to have more FUN in my ESO. Would love some flying mounts, just for fun. Using the excuse of invisible walls, easy answer, get rid of them. Invisible walls is just bad/poor planning and the "easy" way of doing something.
Not my quote but I love this saying

Im sorry but its never gonna happen. If you've actually played wow then you know the difference between eso's world and wows world. Its a little similar but the invisible walls, the way the game is made, and loading screens makes it impossible. I would like to see it but i just dont see it. And i certainly dont think it ruins the game..

Maybe we will see some kind of hovering mount, though.

    No, no and NO.

Flying destroyed WoW. Go look at the forums now, you'll see all kinds of complaints about not being able to fly because even the devs realized it ruined the game.

Swimming I want, flying not so much. I’d love to swim down to a sunken city filled with Maormer and Sloads. Not being able to dive was a major disappointment 2 years ago when I started. They’ve made up for it in other ways.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, is this the same game engine as DCUO? Wasn’t there flight in that? Granted all the high rise buildings were painted cardboard but still.

Now that you mentioned it. Yeah I also miss being able to swim underwater. Think of all the skyshards and even sunken dungeons we could go after if we had that possibility!

Two things I hate about water in this game:
¹ No waves. Skyrim Dragonborn expansion had waves in Solstheim. It is kind of annoying to listen to soundwaves, but no waves visually at all.

² Slaughterfish. Damn those creatures. I feel like a bowl full of cornflakes waiting to be chewed.

How about Wyverns to patrol the skies where players are not allowed? Like slaughterfishies for the sky.

Also, would taking a shot at someone on the ground cause you to dismount, no matter your altitude?

Cyrodiil could be defended by anti mount ballistas. Try to fly in Cyrodiil and boom, instadeath.

Or maybe they could just fix the problems we already have to deal with. Idk.

This would be perfect...a griffin mount that runs/walks on paws and takes “flight” during sprint.

ZOS at every turn has said they will never do flying mounts because of various issues with it.

Considering how free and open the Wayshrine and Player Porting options are there isn't a great deal of benefit to them either past showing the world from a higher vantage point. However having to texture and map all the unseen areas just to make that viable isn't going to be productive use of developer time.

No the people online told you true. It's the same reason we don't have capes. The game engine can't do them. Notice how you can't swim underwater either. If they ever wanted flying mounts we will be playing ESO 2 built on a new engine.

Lore wise, it just isn't really a thing in Elder Scrolls.

That's the one chain of thought that doesn't track, here. There are levitation spells (even if we haven't seen them in a TES game since 2003), people ride Gryphons (rarely.)
