It sounds like you make poor choices in choosing friends. If they were good and decent people then they wouldn’t have exploited the game. In my opinion I think his attitude was perfect. I think cheaters should get hammered. As in when a freight train runs into a cow type of hammered

I mean, if you wanna be friends with people who cheat at video games and get themselves banned for breaking the TOS, go right ahead.
But you might wanna find other activities to share besides video games. Or have a discussion with your friends that goes something like "hey, guys, I really like gaming with you, and if you value our gaming together as much as I do, maybe don't exploit and break the TOS even if you really want that reward."12 -

I have a few friends who have expressed interest in buying skin runs in game (loose friends) and I've cautioned against it, citing the multiple examples I've come across just on the forums of folks getting screwed out of a skin run or unknowingly exploiting.

Doubt it. ZoS banned the people to appease a a bloodthirst that had nothing to do vAS. Tge community was already angry about a number of things before the bans in clockwork so zos tossed out the permabans to score some points and avoid having to make any real changes.3 -

ZoS new all too well that they'd just purchase the game again and create a new account so they scored both goodwill with the community for the permabans and made a few bucks all the while not losing customers. Now people are doing it who truly don't care much about the game and would likely just outright quit if banned. 1000's of accounts have done it since the 1st wave. The last wave (that zos actually commented about at least) that happened a couple months ago mentioned something like 1000 accounts being found guilty but less then 10% getting permabanned. Not even just keep their weapons, most of the people that did it last time either got into an instance where the boss was close to dying or didn't cast caltrops at all so they didn't get banned. A lot of it just didn't happen because of the way they tried to "detect" things instead of just communicating with the playerbase. They could've easily asked anyone in the top guilds that do that trial, "Who did you sell skins to, who did you carry, and who exploited it", I'm sure they would've been glad to help. Then they could've easily cross-referenced and done their own investigation so nobody got banned on accident or didn't get banned. There was a list going around on Xbox NA with at least 80 people and only 20 of them got banned, everyone else got to keep their skins, titles, achievements, and weapons.1
