So overwatch just banned buying lootboxes in Belgium because of out new gambling law. I was wondering if ZOS is gonna do the same with crown crates ? Are crown crates gonna be completely disabled here or are you just not gonna let us buy them anymore ?

Blizzard just stopped their random loot boxes system as well because of the law

Isn't is allowed when it only includes visual stuff? As in, not pay-to-win?

Yeah, I couldn't find any site that quoted the law exactly but it sounds like if there is an element of P2W in the boxes, they are illegal. So, not all loot boxes are illegal. Guess we will hear more on the subject.

For DOTA 2 players people in the Netherlands can see the contents before buying them. I would not mind that for the crown crates aswell.

What about the "you buy crates with crowns not real money" loophole? And crowns are not used exclusively to buy crates so they are not illegal.

I haven't seen the exact wording of the law though.

I hope the rest of the world comes together and bans them world wide.

Why not just sell the stuff in crown store, so if you have funds and really want something you can buy it, instead of having to rely on luck to see if you will ever get the item or not.

The practice of selling crates is dubious and should be illegal and has no place in regular games, unless you're operating a casino business.

    But that's just my opinion.

Considering the Belgium nation flag violates the Belgan constitution... laws are very flexible there. Won't be a problem.

If this was the case then Overwatch would still sell them.

So is Blizz selling Overwatch loot boxes or no? Can we get some concrete info please? Like an article?

Overwatch is Blizzard and they merely stopped selling them in Belgium as OP stated.

    To answer OP's questions.

    1. it depends on how the law is worded if it affects Crown Crates. There is a difference.
    2. Obviously Crown Crates are not going to be completely disabled anytime soon. Even what you cited only affected Belgium.

Also, the Belgium story is not over yet. This is clear if you get the full story.

The fallout from European loot box rulings continued over the weekend as Blizzard announced that it is removing paid loot boxes and chests from Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm players in Belgium. The country's Gambling Commission ruled in April that the loot boxes available for purchase in Overwatch and other games contravene Belgium's gambling regulations.

"While we at Blizzard were surprised by this conclusion and do not share the same opinion, we have decided to comply with their interpretation of Belgian law," Blizzard said in a statement. "As a result, we have no choice but to implement measures that will prevent Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm players located in Belgium from purchasing in-game loot boxes and loot chests with real money and gems."

"While players in Belgium will no longer be able to purchase paid loot boxes in Overwatch and loot chests in Heroes of the Storm, they’ll still be able to earn them by playing the games, and they’ll still have access to all in-game content."

A specific date for the removal of paid loot boxes wasn't revealed, but Blizzard said it would happen "shortly." It also indicated that it is willing to discuss the matter further with the appropriate authorities, leaving the door open to a possible return of paid loot boxes in the future. I've reached out to Blizzard to ask if any progress has been made on that front, and will update if I receive a reply.

nono, it has nothing to do with p2w. It's perfectly allowed to buy p2w items from for instance the crown store as long as the exact content of what you are buying is clearly defined up front.

The issue is that the content of what you are paying for is not determined which makes it classify as gambling under a belgian laws and that is illegal

My bro, an avid Overwatch player, told me about this yesterday. New law: lootboxes are now illegal.

Now I'm curious to see if/how it'll affect Crown Crates. And other games...
Considering the Belgium nation flag violates the Belgan constitution... laws are very flexible there. Won't be a problem.

It's not in violation: the constitution dictated the colors of the flag (black, red and yellow), just not the order they're supposed to be in.

Also, Belgium's verrrrry strict when it comes to Cyber Laws...

I'd change the word strict to accurate. Most legislatives are spineless and probably bought in this age of the capitalism genie escaped from the bottle. I suppose they used one of their wishes, not a very useful one for society as a whole, but not a bad start. Sometimes states need to protect those who are vulnerable to a punt on RNG. For the sake of their dependents.
