Correct me if I am wrong but 4 am EDT is 9 am UTC not 8.

I got the impression that was more of a political thing, and that GMT worked quite happily as a standard for a long time; UTC being a deliberate non-meaning says pretty much all I need to know.Androconium wrote: »If UTC=GMT, then that should be the advertised time.

UTC, coordinated universal time, is a time standard
GMT is a timezone,
the fact that UTC=GMT is only a convenience
hence most times on the internet are quoted in UTC, as that is what the servers, routers and other devices actually use
