Yeah mages guild line is seriously underwhelming and could do with a few skills completely reworked or replaced...ones like equilibrium, and I don't think there'd be any sort of uproar.

Maybe you're speaking from a PvE perspective, but most of the skills are heavily used in PvP. Mage light for the crit and empower and stealth detect, entropy for the health and major sorcery, meteor for big burst, even volcanic rune has its uses in group PvP for bottlenecks and warming up for a meteor combo.
That being said, Equilibrium is totally useless as far as I'm concerned.
