I Accidentally Stole

I was trying to speak to a merchant but instead stole a helmet off an armor rack right next time him.
I lost 68 Gold becuase the Guard wasn't willing to be reasonable or allow me to simply return the helmet.
I don't think it's fair to pay 68 Gold because you picked up a helmet.
I think you should only take/steal items if you're sneaking. Which I was not.
Is there a mod that prevents me from stealing accidentally? I don't like this!

✭✭✭It happens to me embarrassingly often when I turn in crafting writs. I try to do it fast so I can get more writs done...and I accidentally click on stuff like that infamous axe on the Vivec City docks.
I used to jump into the water and head for the outlaw refuge, but now I don’t even bother. I usually don’t have stolen property in inventory when I’m doing writs (no room), so I just surrender to the guards and fork over my fine. Thank goodness that fine doesn’t go higher for each offense!2 -

@Ragebull I appreciate the effort it took you to respond but I went to Gameplay Options and found my settings were set to:Turn off auto loot stolen items in the gameplay options
"Auto Loot: Off
Auto Loot Stolen Items: Off"
My issue is that I directly picked up an item that was just lying around, which counts as stealing in this game like Oblivion.

✭✭✭✭✭I guess if there was, you'd have found it by using google. The search function on the mod pages doesn't seem real useful, but google can always find something if it's actually there.
I picked up one of the weapons laying around on a crate in Alinor, guard walked up immediately, and I paid the gold cheerfully. It was my fault for not paying attention.1 -

That's kind of the way things were starting to work as of a few weeks ago. Stealth to steal, double click to bypass and steal without going into stealth. It's since been rolled back.
I kind of liked the stealth steal route, but there was nothing particularly intuitive about bypassing it. But now I'm used to double clicking to peek into containers...signing off0 -

Eh, areas ALL "load oddly" for me, as I'm stuck with satellite. I don't have any issues now, since that one time. I just wait until the right prompt shows. Then again, I'm never in a real hurry. There's no reason to be in a hurry.0 -

✭It has happened to me. A few times. First time was WTF. Then I was careful. Sadly it does still happen from time to time. Not much we can really do about it except trying to play so fast. Now I usually aim for the head instead of the body when talking to merchants or anyone by a table.
