vMA forgot my progress

So I was playing veteran Maelstrom Arena and I closed my client to go take care of some yard work; when I logged back on and went back in it had completely reset. My first thought was that I must have been switched to normal some how but no, I was still set to vet. I've had other characters without any progress save issues so this was a first. Is there a proper way to leave vMA when you want a pause without losing your progress? What actions specifically will reset it?
