Yes, when there's a major update on consoles players need to download/install the base game patched. Raraaku✭✭✭✭The patch doesn't actually add 40GB additional data to your game files. Dependent upon the game engine and files being patched, an update to one particular portion of an asset (such as the changes to skill/attribute respec) could require the entire asset being reapplied to the game files. Most large game files are already compressed when originally downloaded; the total amount of data from ESO on my hard drive is 37.8 or so gigabytes. In comparison, XCOM2 is 68.8 gigabytes.
Essentially, the patch is decompressing the current game files, replaces those game files with the new game files, and then re-compressing the game files back up after the overwrite is complete. Now with this being also a new DLC update, there will be an increase to the total game file size since new items and dungeons are being added, but patch sizes don't directly reflect the size of your game after it's been patched.
That's why people wonder why the download is 10 gigabytes, but the patch is 40 gigabytes, but the total amount of data actually being added to your game file is around 2 gigabytes.

No, he/she is correct. You're download speed is the issue.
Once the data is finally downloaded, the patch should be relatively quick in replacing the patched files. I'm afraid you are wrong. If you read what the launcher says when it shows 40gb it says patching. That is NOT downloading but patching.0 -

✭✭✭One thing to take note of...….
IF you get the "patch manifest unzip fail" and the game asks you to repair MOST times all you need to do is close the error box and then close the Launcher....
On re-opening the Launcher the error is usually gone and the game will start downloading and patching.
At worst you may have to close and re-open error and launcher a few times to achieve this, today I only had to close them once.

Today I had a slightly over 2GB download, followed by a 55GB patching which was then followed by 2 or 3 more smaller downloads and patchings…
This is the way ZoS always handle their patch implementation, it can be confusing but you'll only actually add a couple of gigs to your game file When people say to me........

DMBCML✭✭✭Are all y'all using the launcher? I stopped using that years ago and have much fewer problems. I use eso64.exe and it works great. I only use the launcher when there is an update. I don't have steam.0 -

If you ever get an error while downloading a new patch, DO NOT ever click on repair. this will start a base game re-download that is indeed about 40+ GB. just close the launcher when a patch manifest error happens and reopen it. it will work next time.
If you already clicked repair, you are pretty much screwed.0 -

The launcher said the compressed file was corrupt and gave me the option to repair. I did, and it redownloaded the whole game.

Alas, the "applying" is going at a snail's pace for me. Currently says "Applying patch 31979.63mb remaining 17.10 MB/s". Been at 27% complete for quite awhile now. Downloading is reasonably quick, applying takes forever.0 -

Then don't tell people they are wrong when they are not. The total amount of data added to the game files from this patch was indeed 2gb. It was your assumption that a general statement on how patching works was directed at you; which as far as I can tell, it was not in any way. I'm not sure why you're trying to make this into a big deal, particularly when a statement was not even directed towards you nor was it hostile.
