Vvardenfell as starting zone?

I've just come back after a two year break and noticed something different.

I created a character as normal and sided with the aldmeri dominion but the place I started in looked completely different (vvardenfell)

After I've done all the tedious quests in this zone, can I continue "as normal" in the original starting zone? Or better yet skip vvardenfell and start questing in the original starting area instead?

If you have the Morrowind DLC you will start in Vvardenfell. To access the main quest line go to Vulkel Guard and you will be approached by a hooded stranger.

You can leave Vvardenfell by any active wayshrine. You can travel to KR or Auridon from there.

Since new characters usually don't have other wayshrines available, the best way to reach mainland is to use a ship in Seyda Neen which is the first turn to the right when you leave your original ship in which you appear after finishing Morrowind tutorial.

Also, a ship near the northern Vivek entrance will get you to any capital of three Alliances.

You can skip Morrowind questline too (though I would rather not, since it is quite interesting, especally side quests)

Yes, just talk to the navigator (these are visible on your map as an anchor symbol - usually a ship or cart, a ship if you are on Vvardenfell) and travel to the mainland, once you get there an NPC will approach you and give you a quest that leads in to the original main quest :)

New characters now start with 1 wayshrine in each alliances starter city (Daggerfall, Ebonheart and Vulkel Guard) unlocked, plus 1 on each starter island and 1 in each DLC zone you have access to. So you can use them in addition to the boats to get to wherever you want to go first after the tutorial.

Between that and level scaling you can play the game in any order you like, as long as you know where to go to find the quests you want.
