Why did you come back?

I guess this doesn't apply to people who ever left, but I am curious why people came back. Heck I don't like leaving people out, say why you stay and never left. This can show what ESO/Zenimax does great and also show what they do wrong.

For me, I bought the PC version and hated the experience. Not liking being online all the time. Not being good at key board and mouse with no controller support and having to pay $15 a month just to play a game I already bought. So after my "free" month of playing I quit. Also new classes just made the game feel to me not TES. It just seemed a shell of a game in name only.

Then ESO came to consoles. I bought it again for Xbox One. To start off I was upset I couldn't transfer my PC to Xbox One. I don't like being blamed for "not knowing" when I believe Zenimax didn't do enough to say this was a limited time when before it was never mentioned. So not starting off to well. Too jittery. Game played bad in certain areas. Just felt like a skin of a game still. At least there was no monthly fee. So I kept restarting new characters all the time to try something but it never clicked. So I quit again.

I came back again to try it out again and I liked it. It was ok. I left because of life reasons and depression on and off.

I wanted to play Arena so I tried ESO again since I couldn't find the copy for Arena anymore. For some reason, ESO clicked to me. I guess I said to myself I had to take the good with the bad and at least I am in almost Arena with modern graphics. I guess not being locked to my Alliance till level 50 or what ever the lock was helped. Took some time but now I love it. While there is still a lot of stuff Zenimax does wrong, they also do great stuff as well that I never noticed before. My fault for not really knowing? Zenimax for being too silent and expecting us to know what the game is suppose to be? I guess it's both. Zenimax could have been more open so I would understand more.

I have also tried other MMO games. Guild Wars 2. Seems like a great game BUT just didn't feel like learning new Lord and not having no controller support I never got into it. If it had controller support I would have bought the game. Riders of Icarus seems like a good game. Pokémon hunting. FLYING MOUNTS and AREIL COMBAT looks fun. While no controller support, game seemed ok to play for now on keyboard and mouse BUT with no Y inverse I have trouble playing the game. Seeing how not many people playing and the company quiet I didn't want to invest in something that might not stay around. Black Desert Online. Beautiful game. Just seemed too much grinding and gender locked characters was an issue with me. Funny for a game with so many options, the one option they don't give is gender. Cheap to get into, but stories of ganking and hard core, seems like a game not for me. Also it seems Pay to Win. I believe I could do everything for free but to grind that much, the fun seems to be gone then. So never started.

So since I was playing with keyboard and mouse I tried Guild Wars 2 again. I got into it. Only a level 5 character but I was seeing now the time we need to sink into playing. Since I wanted to ride mounts and in GW2 I had to wait till level 80 I tried ESO again and spend all my time with it now because I realized that time into characters is a must and I should have never deleted my characters and kept playing the same character or at least not deleting them.

So with some of the negatives that Zenimax offers there always seems what I leave for if not for life and depression it's worse in other games. Major issue for ALL games is bag space. Once I saw this, I found out that Zenimax is the best that I know of and is the worst offender when it comes to bag space.

Well that is all in the past now. Life still happens so I take time off. At least I can't wait to come back and start playing ESO again. I am still fighting depression but trying to find the things I like and enjoy now. ESO is helping me in that.

So there is my little story. What is your little story? Even if you never left why not say why you stay.

I bounce in and out of f2p/b2p MMOs all the time (heck, I bounced in and out of WoW when I played it, too).

I play for a time, get burnt out, and switch over to playing something else in my backlog.

Why/when do I come back? When there's a content release or event that attracts my attention again.

In ESO's case, I came back this year when I pre-ordered Summerset & got the free Morrowind with it. Played Morrowind & Warden until Summerset launched, then played Summerset. I also hung around for the anniversary event, ESO+ trial, and Orsinium. I'm winding down for now, I think, but daily rewards & leveling my Warden's JC & horse riding have me logging in a bit daily.

Next time I get dragged in for more than daily-login will likely be the Halloween event.

(didn't help that, at around the same time, Star Trek Online dragged me back in with the anniversary, Gamma Quadrant content release, and Summer beach event.)

Played 1,5 month after release. Got tired (was playing a lot), subscription was expencive for me that days, and some interesting single-player game was waiting...
Returned somewhere in time of Thieves Guild. Played it. Played a bit more. Left.
Returned later. Played Dark Brotherhood on PTS and on live. Stole about 1,5 millions to buy house. Got all event achievements. But all this - with long periods of not playing.
And then I started to buy luxury furniture... and needed gold...

    Sound stupid, yeah?

Simply put, they got me with their Facebook advertising. Forget what expansion or chapter it was, but here I am.

I left because Cyrodiil was a mess, came back and it's still a mess. No idea why I'm sticking around.

The game is very fun, don't get me wrong, but I wonder why I stay sometimes.

    I have stayed.

I have tried most of the f2p Xbox MMOs

I can't describe it exactly, but there is no PvP like ESO PvP. The combat in ESO feels a lot more like what I've always wanted.

The bugs, balance issues etc are all within a good system, if I didn't like the PvP it never would have held my interest long enough to even know about balance, or mechanics, or set interactions etc.

    Combat feels more...

Well like in other MMOs you have try and move to your opponent's side and it feels like moving a tug boat through a crowded dock, more and your opponent moves in an equally sluggish and hapless fashion.

In ESO your position is precise, your control and character direction impactful and important. It's a more determined sort of combat; more cerebral if you will. (Also why lag and bugs have such a huge effect on combat)

First and foremost, I hate TV. I have read 1000's of books and I read the same plots over and again. So, when I want a relaxing activity, I game. Games are my TV.

Why do I play ESO, its a fun game that lets me do things the way I want to in regards to combat, yes the min maxers are throwing tomatoes at me as I type this. My guilds have nice people in them, and the world is just beautiful and nice to explore.

I do play other games, I have hundreds of them, but this is my only MMO. In fact, if this one shuts down, I probably wont ever play another MMO again. And, yes that includes the new Fallout 76 coming out, but that all depends on what we can mod in that game.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I used to play on Xbox One, but I left the game after some people got quite a bit too stalkerish, and were very demanding of my time. Not only that, but the guild leader who got a bit too attached also seemed to be a chronic liar as well. So I had to escape a bad situation.

Now I am playing on PS4 with a good friend, and having quite a bit of fun again! Currently i'm just under CP130, and very excited to hit that 160 mark so I can start gearing up again. And also to make an Alt so my friends and I can swap roles for dungeons to keep things fresh.

I stay because I love anything that has to do with Elder Scrolls. Game could be good, or the game could suck, I'll still play it.

Now I will take breaks if I get frustrated with how the game performs, if I get burnt out, or just take a break from gaming in general.

Played since lauch for about a month, than got a bug and coudnt log in for many days..Went to play another MMO.

Came back after a year - played for sometime because of good old memories. Left after a week because got bored.

Came back in 2017 because I fell in love with Vikings and was looking for a mmorpg with a viking race. Left after a month because burned out on viking theme.

Came back in 2018 because was tired of the games with limited post launch development and everybody were talking about the ESO and how much new content the devs bring every year. I want a game which is worthy to invest my time. Got hooked on pvp and bgs badly and playing it for 2 months already. Probably will stay for a year or two :)

Well, in ESO you can have a total of 30 characters out of 10 races - playing on both servers EU/NA and maxing out your character slots. I guess that is enough to play for more than 2 years.

OP i like how you said you don't like leaving people out, made me laugh. i'll tell my bit. i usually end up talking about myself anyway; this time i was kind of invited :)

while not technically my first MMO, this is the WoWiest game i've ever played. i fell in love with Elder Scrolls a couple years after all my gamer friends started insisting Oblivion was practically made just for me. i played Skyrim just as much. with the time i spent on either game i could probably have instead gotten a pilot's license, but TES is cheaper.

i was still reluctant about MMORPGs when ESO launched, and the reviews weren't good. i watched UESP for lore updates but didn't worry about playing. then one day i found myself with too much money and saw that a new Xbone with a big HD had been released, so i bought it, and all the most expensive peripherals, and a special new TV for it, and a game that got old quick. the next month i still had too much money and i walked past a copy of ESO's new Gold Edition. i looked it up; all the DLCs plus a mount, seemed like a good way to start the game now that it doesn't cost a monthly charge to play.

i knew that night that it was my new main game. it still is. i play other games only during maintenance. i have maps of Tamriel on my wall and my calendar was made by UESP. i am devoted. oh, and i gladly subscribe that $15/month i was reluctant to be "forced" to pay.

i have better luck with my connection than a lot of people, so my biggest concern i guess is probably more interface improvements, what people here call "QoL". i like the progress i've seen.

well, my break's almost over. thanks for an excuse to type. i hope the depression gets way better for you. exercise has always helped me the most with that. if your body's good and you have the right backyard, maybe try learning how to dodge-roll in real life? knowing how to move and how to fall is really a great skill to have. best wishes.

Played at the beginning. Seemed too costly, and friends that started later or in a different faction were put off by our inability to easily play together.

As I enjoy playing games with my friends, I left ESO.

I returned due to the One Tamriel update. One of the most impactful updates I have seen for this game. Now I constantly try to lure friends in. The free-play weekends help me in that endavour.

Played from Beta on pc and didn't like the vet system. Plus, those skeevers hurt a lot, back then, and I left. I came back to switch to ps4, and played until I decided i needed to act more like an adult, so I left again. By the time Summerset was being advertised, I decided that i was tired of adulting and summerset was just too beautiful to resist. So, I'm back with no plans of leaving. Waiting impatiently to give my ww some exercise soon.

I played since launch but went on an extended hiatus after burning myself out trying to grind achievements (gathering trophies and trying to fish wasn't my idea of fun) and leveling alts through map completion. The big thing that pushed me away was the lack of a shared achievement system and the realisation that the game wasn't fun anymore and was simply a grind. I kept a tab on ESO though and purchased the DLC as it popped up with plans on 'eventually' returning. I would occasionally log in for a few days before being overwhelmed by all the content and all the 'exclusive' stuff I've missed and ultimately kept on vanishing.

Approximately 2 months ago I logged on and it sort of just clicked and I've been playing semi casually since. I'm enjoying the content and I'm treating the game more like a single player experience in order to not feel demotivated by all these 2k+ CP and maxed achievement point people. All in all the actual gameplay hasn't changed, but the additional DLCs and whatnot have kept me busy (I still haven't completed Summerset).

If the game continues to develop and progress I can see myself sticking with ESO for a while. I've always been a huge Elder Scrolls fan so it was inevitable really!

I played through beta and for a couple of years after. However due to a gy injury and too much mousing my shoulder froze. Couple that with my main toon being a templar and and you can see my problems. That poor temp who was so OP initially was nerfed into oblivion and back. He was never even able to defeat Mr. Bal and finish the main game. Sucks to be him. And me. There was a deal between Morrowind and Summerset that I took advantage of. I am VERY pleased with the changes I have seen. Enough so that I got a 6 month sub. My temp still sucks but my Altmer magden is serviceable in her own way.

I have always loved the TES universe and therefore this game, although from the mythological tradition 1T is an abomination.

I have played on and off since launch, never more than a three month break though. What keeps me around is the lore of this universe overall. I appreciate that ZOS has actually taken this universe and is doing something with it. They aren't afraid to flesh it out and expand on it, nor do they shy away from some of the more unusual lore. Combine that with regular updates and it's my jam.

I played beta, preordered, loved the game at launch, bought 3 months of sub for after included month, finished Cadwell's Gold, and didn't renew sub because I had cleared all the content except Craglorn and I wasn't feeling a group zone. I had zero interest in paying money monthly to repeat content.

When the game went B2P, I returned, but inventory management got progressively worse. Now I sub twice a year when new content releases and I don't really play the rest of the year. I still love the game, but, again, I'm not going to pay money to repeat content.

They listened to two things we suggested (2h weapons like staves count as 2 set pieces and the change to Silver Leash) and I got tired of playing Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.

Also I figured enough time had passed where I can explore Morrowind without 40 people trying to jump on top of Vivec literally and figuratively.

Was gone 30months and thought I’d try ESO again just to find out what has changed.Found out my BiS gear and vr16 toons were heavily outdated and it would take ages just to get back in trail.Still carried on having no clue what to really do,I’m stubborn what comes gaming and want figuring things on my own without google help.

After week or so (never checked Crow store because I knew I wasn’t going to spend any money anymore to that bs) I got 2 free things called ”Crown Crate”,I was like ok,free stuff cool.I opened them and got stuff, some bottles and things and cool looking mount which name I ignored but it looked cool and started to use.But real ground breaker for me to keep playing was some unknown players and they weird behaviour, afterwards I thank those players for spark that made me stay.

Using that mount some players sent me whispers accusing me supporting ZoS for being ”whale” and spending hundreds of euros just to get cool stuff from Crown Crates.I was like what the heck!?What is this bs.I knew it had something to do with the mount I was using so I gave up and googled it.Galvanic Storm Steed, extremely rare mount available only via Crown Crates.Wow,if for nothing else,I decided to keep playing because of those suckers and blast flash/bang/boom with my mount everytime some jealous co-player throws my face me being a ”whale” instead lucky sob  And after that decision,I found the game again and enjoy every minute I play it.
I’d dare to say that ZoS managed to trick me but with me they reached their goal by giving me one reason to stay for while and find the game again
