Because one of the reasons to play RPGs is to experiment and find new novel ways to play.

If all you care about is playing the meta, go play Counter Strike or some other bland game w/o any imagination required.

The thing is, what's the point of "finding new novel ways to play" if you fail at doing them?

The main goal of a tank is to not die, which Ice Staff tanks seem to do a lot for me. Also they seem to rely on the ice staff to taunt and thus lose aggro a lot.

It's not really considered "meta sheep" to want a tank to use a sword and shield.

I backbar frost staff on my DK tank. It's nice to have an option of using magicka as a resource for blocking instead of stamina. I'd never use frost staff as my main tanking weapon though. Too many good abilities in the S&B skill line.

It has its uses. Proccing enchant with ele wall, using ele drain in a 3 dd group, etc... It's a nice offbar weapon.
However, using only heavy attacks to taunt is too slow and its better to use it with inner fire.

But if this new way will turn out to be effective, it has all chances to become new meta. The horror!
That's how new meta is created.
If its worse than other options, well, I dont know why would you play something non-effective just for the sake of being non-meta. There's much more to your individuality than the build you play.

It ain' even the meta man.

It's just plain an inferior option, and I say that -as- a magicka tank.

If they're losing aggro, it means they're not doing their role properly. It isn't really the fault of the Ice Staff at all but rather the person misjudging how to properly maintain aggro with the heavy attack and now has to try and pull aggro again, which will take a few seconds considering the slow windup of Ice Heavy Attacks.

The Heavy Taunt of Ice Staff is something you have to learn when it's possible to use it without you losing aggro or getting OHKO'd, which is somewhat tricky if you don't know an encounter well enough to know when an attack needs to be interrupted/blocked/dodged/etc. and it does leave you vulnerable for those few seconds of the windup so it is a bit of a burden on the healer in that they'd need to be more mindful of you if you're trying to Heavy while swarmed by enemies. Some fights, it's not viable to use the heavy attack taunt at all (like in AA when trying to grab aggro on an Axe, in which you'd need to grab it ASAP and don't have time to Heavy Attack.) but it's all a learning experience.

There's a learning curve that Ice Tanks need to go through in order to properly get the hang of it and it can be a bit of a hassle to do so.

ice staff may just be funny for some dungeon runs tank dps hybrid, but that's it. It doesn't have the potential of shield. And if using magicka to block then what u gon do with stamina

counter strike is the ultimate skill game. There u don't have any build or luck, it's just pure skill.

Their effectiveness really depends on the content being played and an individual's playstyle.

I wouldn't bring my pure magic ice staff tank into a trial or a vet dlc dungeon due to the limitations of my build and playstyle. However, I have effectively used it in all normal dungeons and all vanilla vet dungeons, since damage sheilds are sufficient for tanking and my heavy attack damage rotation adds to the overall group damage.

Variety is the spice of life.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

LOL. You forgot the #sarcasm tag, there, bro.

Ice staff tanking works amazingly well if done right.

My tank is a health DK with S&B front bar, ice staff back bar. Since blocking comes from two different resource pools between those two, I never run out of resources. Plus, the ice wall of elements is a very nice cc/debuff, the heavy attack is a free ranged taunt (does not take the place of inner fire, however, but it's a nice backup) which also restores resources...etc.

In content where you pretty much have to permablock between taunts (like certain vet situations) you can pierce armor, block, when stam gets to about half switch to back bar, block, allowing stam to regen while block costs mag, switch bars, pierce armor, block, rinse, repeat.

I have no idea why anyone would tank without an ice staff, tbh.

I was actually disappointed when this came out as I wanted to see a frost dps. That being said and like many others have said it works really well on the off bar. I use it on my offbar nb tank I also run infused jewelery which is amazing on an argonion, I run block amd bash reduction and can literally bash with no resourve cost, its really fun. When I use potion cooldown enchants I have crazy uptime on warhorn and resource return the frost staff is usually my oh f bar.

It is actually a very good back bar weapon for tanking. There are some niche builds that made it work as main weapon too. It's not as good as 1h/s of course but still decent.

It's just like bow. Amazing as an off bar weapon but not so much in main bar.

theoretically any weapon can work for tanking if using the Undaunted taunt
even have a Dual Wield Fortified Brass Medium tank setup using Blood Craze as a HoT
would not attempt to run such builds in end-game content, but pugging base game dungeons it is easy to be a successful tank and still do things a bit differently

sucks by objective metrics when compared to sword and board
sometimes it is nice to just lul and have some fun with the role tho

It can be made to work, but I'd say it's a skill level tier up from dual S&B.

Most of the ice staff tanks suck, not because of the weapon of choice, but the player behind it.

I like how Sword and Shield on a tank has gone from "common sense" to "meta"

It's not even meta. Many of the top trial guilds are using staves backbar right now (either ice or lightning).

Funny, all the top-tanks suggest s&b on both bars.

ice staff may just be funny for some dungeon runs tank dps hybrid, but that's it. It doesn't have the potential of shield. And if using magicka to block then what u gon do with stamina?

With defending trait on staff it comes pretty close to a shield. Also, by using magicka to block this lets you use stamina for the following actions:
    • Break free
    • Dodge roll
    • Bash to interrupt casters
    • Sprint

I like mine, I find it easier to use than a dk one, plus you can stack a daft amount of healing and damage reduction. Between max resistance, a huge health pool, my ultimate running and a pile of damage mitigation the game has to hit me with a 135’000 one shot to kill me. Plus my taunt and debuffs are built in :D

I love the ice staff...but as a sole tanking weapon even with a magicka based tank, it leaves a lot to be desired. I use the ice staff on my back bar to supplement the S&B on my front bar, and in that regard, they are great...as a sole tanking weapon though...not so much unless you care only about taunting the boss and plan on CC for all mobs...which can be done I suppose, but would take a good deal of skill to do effectively.

I have one magicka-based healer/tank hybrid that uses ice staff/resto staff and while it can tank normal vet dungeons(not DLC versions) just fine while spamming heals the entire time, the health is low(about 24k) and my health bar swings pretty wildly. This isnt really a problem on most dungeons, but dungeons with a lot of fear(Elden Hollow as an example) its a huge issue since you cant self heal while running away, and CC breaking fear is always buggy.

I can imagine a certain beserker-tank build similar to a fire/lightning staff one I use for normal vet dungeons that is more of a Tank/DPS hybrid and I could build something similar with an Ice/Lightning staff setup focusing on CC instead...but I would give up the extra DPS of a double proc on Illambris...though I suppose I could make up for it if I played a DK using elemental succession and still manage to double proc illambris from time to time...I would end up with less DPS but greater CC than my current beserker tank in the end though.

In the end, it depends on the content you are running and what you are building to try to accomplish. Normal vet dungeons? Yes, vet DLC dungeons or trials? Not likely unless you have uber skills.

Funny, "Top tank" seems to be very subjective, which is why I said it exactly as I did.

We would have to argue who the top tank is, and I think its kind of lame to pit players against each other for being the "top" because then you get butt-hurt streamers claiming so and so streamer isnt as great as them and so on, which I have literally seen on this forum and It's embarrassing for everyone.

Leaderboards are leaderboards though so it's a bit safer when discussing metas. Anyway from what I have seen it seems to depend on the group's set up and the content. Still, I think my statement stands that it's not necessarily meta to run two sword and boards. I think there is a transition there.

Here are a few videos of tanks in leaderboard trials guilds using staff backbar:
