Can someone explain outfit slots?

Looking at the threads about the new monster style pieces I think I might have completely overlooked the entire outfit slot thing. I ESO+ so wear costumes and can dye them whenever but this is different to an outfit?

Outfits in terms of disguises are quest related equipment or enchantsments and can hide your char from enemies. In the zone where the enchant has effect, it can be destroyed and you can't sneak, in most cases.

Outfit can be configurated at outfit station to look like any style you know and any color dye you know for some gold price

First slot free and available on every char
The 1500 crown per slot per character is a rip off

Yes, outfits are a different system. Costumes are one piece.

Outfits are multiple pieces chosen from all the styles motifs you have learned and include weapons, not just armour.

Each character has one free outfit which is unique to that character. Visit a dye/outfit station and you can select the items from learned motifs that you wish to appear over your existing set pieces.

WHAT! How did I miss this, spent loads on useless costumes when I own most motifs in the game that I can mix and match! Thanks I know what I'm gonna be doing next time I log in.

I will put it in simple terms - the outfit system allows to create a "costume" kind of element made from armor pieces, which you know already and you can dye them with every color you have acquired - in each such slot one such outfit costume can be stored. So this way you have an outfit available, which works like a costume, but is made from armor pieces.

But be aware that like Morgul667 said, that if you buy an outfit slot, that you get this slot just for one character, it is not account wide and a blatant cash grab. Be as well careful, when you dye your normal armor to not make it use an outfit slot. Outfit slots are for "costumes", which are made from armor pieces, which you are not wearing currently. To dye your worn armor you should not use an outfit slot. ZOS is automatically putting that to "outfit 1" - set it to "no outfit".

Outfit is basically a customly made costume. Though the fact that outfit slots aren't account wide, is pure bs.

edit: and regarding the monster style pieces - ESO is now catering to the outfit system by releasing "motifs" that aren't actually crafting motifs, in that the style can be used to make an outfit, but can't be crafted with (which means you can't make something with it and trade that to another person)

^BOLDED. Funny, because out of my 12 characters, most have at least three to four outfit slots, my current character has EIGHT outfit slots. Since the addon AlphaGear allows automatic switching of outfits with each gear set, it allows my characters to have a unique appearance whenever I switch sets for different content.

The intent of the outfit system is to separate the looks of the equipment from the function. You can wear whatever sets you want (and you generally don't have much control on the dropped sets what style you get) and still show a consistent style of your choice. And if you feel that the lower-level looks are better, you can stick with those at no penalty.

The available motifs still depend on your ability to gather them (or buy them), but it's at the account level. Motifs for crafting writ use remain character-specific, so you need multiple copies for multiple crafters. But before outfits, one character could make what another wears, so there's really no change in that aspect.
