Shouldn't temper material use be the other way around?

It kinda doesn't make how I have 500 green tempers and only have to use 2 for a 100% upgrade, in my opinion at least.

I know it's not that big of a deal but it just doesn't really make sense; so my suggestion is to increase the amount of lower tier tempers needed to achieve 100% upgrade ratio. Don't mess with the drop rates or try changing their market prices (not possible anyway or people will riot) - just increase the amount cos sitting on 500 green tempers and 5 gold ones doesn't make much sense.

Would be a good gold-sink opportunity as well, we know how some people are sitting on houndreds of millions of gold anyway.

Yeah, I understand your point. It's a little counter intuitive. I guess it's how it works, you need more and more investment for less and less results, like, for roughly anything else.

I kinda get where you're coming from and it kinda makes sense but...

I'd hate to lose the feeling of crafting a full yellow set for my character. It just feels like I've accomplished something that isn't easy. This way everyone would have yellow gear as soon as they hit cp 160.

So I have to disagree with you.

I find your post somewhat confusing where you said gold sink but, pedantry, I will assume you meant item sink. Would it not be better to let you use low tier mats to up grade to higher tier mats for an item sink. Say, 50 greens for 1 blue, 100 blues for a purple and 150 purples for a gold. Make the system work backwards as well 1/2 return 100% of the time. Players do not riot, look at jewelcrafting, they just get really disappointed like my parents.

Green upgrades mats are used a lot in furniture crafting. If you do much of it you can get low pretty quickly. On the other hand blue upgrade mats I can keep 10-15 stacks pretty easily even using them a lot.

Allow me to disagree. I think it is perfectly designed the way it is now; the better you want your item to be, the more it will cost you.

You do have to use more than 2 green tempers until you have leveled high enough to assign points to reduce that amount. In theory that means you've practiced enough that you now know how to perform the task with less.

Add to that that perhaps the green temper items contain more material within them than the gold temper items. Thus while you need only two green you end up needing eight gold to have the same amount of workable material.

We can only see the little icon that represents the item. We have no idea how much workable material is actually represented. Not everything has to be in a 1:1 ratio.

You often need insane amounts of lower-tier upgrade material for furnishing. If you are not into housing/furniture, you will be sitting on lots of lower-tier upgrade material. But if you do housing/furnishing, you will be going through lots and lots of green and blue upgrade mats. A lot of furnishing plans require like 9 green upgrade mats. And if you plan to fill an entire house, the upgrade mat requirements can really skyrocket. But furnishing plans that require gold upgrade mats usually only require 1 Tempering Alloy or Rosin or whatever. So Housing/Furnishing is kind of the opposite of gear upgrades. So I am not sure changing upgrade mat requirements is necessary for gear. There is already another crafting part of the game that has the material requirements inverted in the way you suggest.

You're also looking at it per item, not overall. You'll use the low-level tempers more often if you keep your equipment "current" as you move up. You replace the lower stuff more often doing that, so use more of the tempers. Once you're past CP160 and making things to keep, that's when you gold them, and it will cost more, but only once.

    8 gold
    16 purple
    24 blue
    32 green

When you put actual numbers to the idea, it doesn't really feel that good.
I also consider improvement items to be a matter of scale; even though the icons are the same size the items are not.

So it's basically 2 large items for fine but 8 tiny items for legendary.

    ^THIS!

Plus, as others have stated... greens, blues are more for lower level characters who are changing their gear every few levels. I remember before I reach CP160, I was crafting new gear every few levels... this was pre-One Tamriel though so I'm talking Vet Levels. I found I needed those lower level tempers a lot!! Now, I have most of the gear I want and a huge inventory of low level tempers... and if I need to buy a set from the Trade Guild, most of the time I can find a reasonably priced Purple item so I don't even need to use the greens or blues. I'm OK with this and don't see why it's a problem for you OP? It's not like it's taking up a huge amount of space in your inventory. If you don't like carrying them, then sell them, problem solved. But asking for costs of upgrading to increase is only hurting low level players, which the greens and blues are mostly for, your idea would not be helping anyone.

I think OP is completely wrong, common less valuable items are just that, more common.

Mechanically it makes sense to need more of the rarer material to make it seem more valuable.

Realistically you would use less of the rarer material in crafting as you wouldnt want to use up your supply. Ideally better quality materials would also mean youd need less to get the same quality.

It would be nice if ZOS would add some sort of legendary recipes or something for equiments crafts. After learning them you could combine say 100 of a lower quality material to make one of the next tier. Find a use for all those green upgrade mats yknow?

It would make sense if u could "refine" 8 greens into a blue, 4 blues into a purp and 3 prups into a gold one.

I have no idea how half of you guys got the idea that I'm trying to make 50 green tempers be converted into 5 blue possible. All I said that we should be using 8 green/blue/purple tempers for a 100% success rate, just like we do with gold.

I think those low end upgrade mats should be able to have a bulk stack combined into 1 of its successor.
    i.e.
    30 green = 1 blue
    40 blue = 1 purple
    50 purple = 1 gold
