That CPU (Core i5-8600K) is waste of money. It's hardly better in games than 8400 but price is close to Core i7-8700 which is better for future proofing and even now. Just buy 8700K. Also, with GTX 1080/Vega 64+ you want as much as fast RAM. There is a noticable difference.

If your main game is ESO, GTX 1080Ti is huge overkill. GTX 970 is more than enough. Better spend money on 8700K with good motherboard and cooler.

    Basically, cheapest version:
    Intel Core i5-8400 + some B360 MB + 2.400 or 2.666 MHz RAM + GTX 970

For SATA SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500 or Crucial MX300 525 GB.

Still overkill. ESO is like every MMO heavily CPU bound.

I have RX 470 which has similar performance to GTX 970. I can force 2.560x1.600 (VSR) in ESO and even then graphics card doesn't work at fullest. I play with 8xSSAA forced via Catalyst and no fps hit at all.

This should tell you how much ESO is CPU bound.

For ESO, the CPU, especially ones with strong single core benchmarks, will see best gains. With Update 18, we are getting multi-core support finally which should really help boost older CPUs with multi cores to reduce that bottleneck.

    Buy 8400 or 8700(K).

As I typed, 8600K is hardly faster than 8400, but lack threads like 8700(K), and 8700K is the better for OC (it's clocked higher in start anyway). It's true that 8700(K) is hardly faster in games than 8600K, but in the feature... And if you do some work on PC beside gaming, i7 is better.

But as you would play in 1440p, CPU is less relevant than GPU.

You can buy 8400 with good Z370 MB, fast 3.200+ MHz RAM (faster the better) and GTX 1080, and then several years later buy used 8700(K).
In vast majority of games in 1440p there is small difference or not at all between 8400 and 8700K as games become GPU bound.

And if you just play ESO, stick with GTX 970.

Just wait until Summerset to see if multicore support is hot air or real one.
