Hoarding principles

Once I hit CP 160 I started saving every set piece. I need little help figuring out what to save and what not to save. There’s just too many sets and even with multiple mules I’m running out of space. What principal do you use To thin things out, what to hold on to what to get rid of, etc.,?

    I have the same problem
I keep sets that are commonly used or ones that look interesting to me. I get rid of stuff that people either never use, multiple people say are garbage or are obvious garbage

Once I finish getting all my characters geared out, most of the rest will go away.

Your best bet is to get an idea of future classes and roles you want to play and then research what are the BiS for those for PvE and PvP. If it's not a set you will use anytime soon, try and keep only the best trait items (impenetrable, divines, infused are the three most popular). There are quite a few sets that are not really used often by most builds and in my opinion, worthless.

    You can never truly know:
    1. Will you be playing in a year?
    2. Will any sets be buffed/nerfed to the ground within your life playtime?
    3. Will better sets be added that make them worthless?
    4. Will you change character/spec?
    5. list continues forever..

Just hold on to Monster Sets - Helmet and Shoulders.

Nobody knows what's good or bad for you at face value - Even if we knew your class/race/playstyle/goal in the game we couldn't tell you as what works for one, doesn't necessarily work for another.

Except PvE BiS - That's as a whole, well documented.

This will depend on how much of a hoarder you are, and even then it will depend on the individual. A first principle is only to keep the version of the item with the best trait, this is not always clear but as a general rule for pve dd/healer set is best in divines, tank sets are best in sturdy, large pieces are (second) best in infused. Pvp sets are best in impen and niche sets involving role dodge or run speed are best in well-fitted.

You have to decide if a set is something you may one day use. I keep most sets but things like magicka dd proc sets, tanking defence proc sets and irrelevant sets like the oblivions foe set all get sold straight away.

Now that we can run 5-5-2 on any build you will not need the head and shoulders of most sets (although you may want to keep them for sets that work well on just one bar like Lich)

Three years...later I still need this kind of help. My worst advice, take anything that looks interesting and delete when you need room. Sell things often and buy the things you need.

I take a multi step approach.

    1. I save dungeon body set pieces that are in a good trait for sets that I know I will use on a future character in some way. Mostly though, if I am not farming a set in a dungeon I decon the body pieces.

    2. I save appropriate weapons and purple jewelry for some good and some interesting dungeon sets even if i am not sure that I will use them. These are usually the hardest to farm, especially the weapons. I have a few Spider Cultist destro staves because one day I play on making a build around that set and don't want to have to farm for the staves.

    3. I save overworld jewelry and appropriate weapons for good overworld sets like Necro, Spriggans, Spinners, etc. Never know when I am going to make a build using one of these sets and the Jewelry and Weapons are the most expensive and hardest to farm pieces. At least saving a jewelry set or two and some weapons makes it easier. And the body pieces are super quick to farm or cheaper to buy.

    4. I do not save any body pieces for overworld sets unless I am in the process of farming them.

    5. I save most of my monsters set pieces, but usually only try to have 1 piece of each set piece in each weight. And I usually save as many of the shoulder pieces as possible because they are RNG based and the head pieces are easy to farm.

    6. Trials sets are tricky. I usually try to have a piece of each good trial set for every item slot. And I save all weapons from the good sets. But I also save some weapons and jewelry from some of the off sets just in case. For example, with the update to jewelry crafting, Berserking Warrior became useful. Luckily I had been saving weapons and jewelry of it so I didn't need to farm for it after the change.

I also find it useful to go through my bank every time my available slots drop below 25. I'll decon or sell anything that I no longer think I will use. And remove any duplicate pieces that I may have stored.

That advice is more reasonable these days with transmutation existing.

While I am a bit of a noob to builds and haven't really had to think deeply about it with my main being a PvE tank, I do have a lot of max level alts and I have recently started gearing them up to use for more than writs. Off the top of my head, I would suggest considering some of the following:

    1. Search the subreddit /r/elderscrollsonline for "set discussion <set name>" and read through people opinions. Take note of date though, as some views may be outdated
    2. Park decent sets on alts that might use them. I don't really use any of my max level DPS alts, but they have gear to choose through when they start doing anything more than writs.
    3. Decon clear crap sets while accepting that even crap sets could become BiS with rebalancing. Do you really need gear that helps fill soul gems? You are better off killing off animals in the wild for bait and a potential soul form the passive skill.
    4. Decon gear that isn't among the top sets if the trait is junk. Are you really going to waste transmutation stones down the road on those sets? Highly unlikely.
    5. Know what content you will play and what roles you are interested in. If you will never tank, there are a ton of sets that will never be useful to you. If you don't care for PvP, there are a lot of sets that are only worthwhile in PvP. Are you going to use a staff that has set bonuses to your stamina and weapon damage? Are you going to DPS in PvE with an ice staff? If you never plan to tank, do you need a set that procs on using S&B active skills?
    6. Are there sets where you will never use the head and shoulders because you will always pair them with monster sets? I am not particularly savvy on builds, but I would assume that this is a moving target as we don't know what BiS weapons might come out with great 2 set bonuses. But if I have a usable head piece with a weak trait, the odds are pretty low that it will ever get used. I'll take the potential purple temper.
    7. Don't waste inventory on gear you are guaranteed to get by finishing content. Since some pieces are rewards for DLC quests, you can always just run those quests on an alt if you realize the set is now good. It is also pretty easy to get chapter and DLC sets from dailies, especially during events. Any green DLC overland set gear is auto sell for me since those pieces are so easy to get.
    8. Sell overland sets you aren't using in guild store if they have value. Since they aren't bound on pickup, might as well trade for gold that you can always use down the line to buy replacement gear. Definitely sell jewelry right now while their prices are still inflated due to jewelry crafting. Prices have dropped a lot, but being able to sell to both those interested in the set and those leveling crafting makes them sell faster.

I don't keep things I don't need, I've given away the entirety of my inventory twice when taking long breaks from the game, and I was always able to recover. I would say a good rule of thumb, depending on your characters, would be to keep the mostly used crafted sets, like Julianos, Hunding's Rage, and then from the dropped sets the ones that have been featured in most builds and are generally dependable sets: Ebon for tanks, SPC for healers, etc. Don't keep items from sets 'just in case', unless you have room for them. There is no point in keeping a Plague Doctor's cuirass if you never plan to play a tank, especially when it comes to sets that are easily farmed, so even if you do get around to rolling a tank, you'll be able to quickly farm them. The only exception to this is weapons in my opinion, because they are harder to drop than other items, although I guess that depends on individual RNG as well. For example, I kept onto a Mother's Sorrow inferno staff in my bank, even though I never used it, and in this patch it's one of the recommended sets for magicka DPS, so it definitely came in handy. If you read up on builds, usually for PVE at least, there's a handful of specific sets that are most popular in each update, so if you farm an item from that set then it's a good idea to keep it. For PvP, things are more complicated because there is no one build that's popular. Start with sets for your main character, and in time you will earn the gold to expand bank/inventory size and you will be able to keep more items for your other characters and start gearing them up as well.

Keep any Weapons that are 'right' for the set - i.e. Throw away that BSWeave 2h axe but keep the staves.
This includes dungeon loot and overland loot. (That looks at least somewhat useful ofc)

Keep any Undaunted Hats / Shoulders - but be thoughtful about which kind of character will be using them.
For example most Stamina builds will go full medium armour, or 6 med + 1 heavy. So you can usually scrap any light armour versions of Stamina focused sets. (Velidreth, Kragh, Selene etc etc) - same theory with Magika / Tank sets.

Keep Purple Jewellery from any dungeon / overland set that looks useful. Jewellery is always much harder to farm than armour, and can't be upgraded so easily. (Yet)

Scrap / Sell anything overland that you aren't immediately using. You can farm a full armour set in an afternoon, or just buy it from the guild stores later when you do need it.

Keep anything from dungeon / trials sets that you think you will use now, or in the near future.
Especially anything in the correct trait.

Personally, I destroyed every single Hat + Shoulder I had that wasn't part of a monster undaunted set.
I honestly can't see myself not using an undaunted set in the future, unless they take a huuge nerf, which is unlikely.

Decon any duplicate items. The Inventory Insights Add-On can help you to see if your DK alt is also carrying the same Bow as the one in your bank and on your NB for example.

Hold on to monster helmets and shoulders. Some sets are always good, bone pirate, hulking draugr etc. so hold on to them too. Have a look at some builds on youtube depending on if you're doing pvp or pve and hold onto what other people are using

The easy way is this: Only keep what you are farming. If you "might" use it someday...what that really means is that you will never use it...coming from someone who has been playing years.

Generally speaking if I haven't used a set several months after picking it up it goes on the decon pile. If it doesn't it's because I have a specific purpose for it in mind (EX: I'm leveling a new alt and the piece is for the alt when s/he hits cap). I also save all monster set pieces, but I don't run Vet dungeons much so that isn't much of a hardship.

If it's something I can easily pick up, like most overland body pieces, I have no problem deconning. I do keep one of each monster piece in light/med/heavy, just in case. Certain dungeon pieces can go too. Lich, Rattlecage, Ebon, BSW...all super easy to farm if i need them, so it's not absolutely necessary to hang onto them if they're not being used.

Make use of the housing chests too. I use mine to hold seige, potions/foods, recipes, motifs, Master writs, gold jewelry, and random silly event items, plus one small one that is just used to easily transfer gear between my crafter and my other toons. Max out the number of toons you can make and start using them as mules if you need to. Just log on once a day and train their riding skill, in case you ever decide to use them.

I bought a 2nd copy of the game for $10 during a sale. Anything not bound that I don't have an immediate use for goes there. having the 2nd account also comes in handy for when I am deep in a delve or something and my bags get full. I can just RTS some stuff to my 2nd account then when I have the room I can go send it back again.

I tend to decon or sell things that can be farmed in some of the easier content and hang on to the stuff that drops from the harder content.

Master Merchant keeps me focused when hording. I look at my stash and if the item is difficult to get with a high gold value I keep it. If not, it either gets deconstructed or off to the vendor. If pieces can be picked up for less than 5000g each, why keep them around?
